2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

Grunef, the best thing to do is get them under a fan as soon as you get home and give them atleast 24 hours to get most of the moisture out, then put them in an air tight container with some kind of dessicant, "Damp-rid" is available at most supermarkets,it's sold in a blue milk carton type container.
Dont actualy let the shrooms touch the dessicant, put them in a wire basket above the damprid,or rig up some kind of similar deal.
This method will give you Cracker dry shrooms in two or three days.....Cracker dry means the stems will snap not bend.....if they dont snap they aren't dry.

heres a few pics of this weird sub we found.. it was growing underground with only his head popping up.. and the other pic is of our total haul including some nice san pedro we found behind an unidentified mexican reastaurant

has the season ended?

down here we're getting shit all rain and all my spots have dried up
damn whacky melbourne weather :X its not even the middle of winter yet.

oh well, i had 3 awesome trips.

There still should be at least another month (or maybe two) but it all depends on the rain

Yeh well last season it finished around this time even though the conditions seemed prefect (cold snaps every night and some sounny days and rain).....

Anyway i think it is the cold, i remember reading on shroomery or on here that the cold effects the mycellium.

Hence my question as to whether some will pop up when it warms up a bit.

peace

well it rained like buggery over the last couple of days. Although I'm not much of a connoisseur, I'm not going to stop hunting until they well and truly stop appearing.

here's to more shrooms

My 'suburban' patches seem to have dried up, yet my higher altitude patches are still going strong. Hauled in over 200 huge mushrooms yesterday, practically all of them 6cm+ in diameter =D Set for summer, although additional flushes are always appreciated. :)

Talking to my father who grew up and lives on a farm this week is usualy the coldest week of winter. Maybe there is a connection, Im not realy sure.

OK, had another look around, they are still growing. I didnt see any new pins but there was many full grown and partialy grown mushrooms. I suspect more will apear if/when we get some steady rain. From talking to friends it sounds like it depends on the area.

/\ agreed... went for my last hunt of the season today and found some really nice ones.

I believe that the mycellium is aware that it's ability to 'fruit' is about to die and hence it gives a final boost of fresh mushrooms. Cos damn i found some fine ones today. I suggest people head bush cod i reckon it would be rocking.

Happy hunting people..... i'm going to the snow tommorow! whoop!

Hmm, yeh, they're still around, most definately, but a lot of them are oldies/dry ones. Theres not so many new ones popping up, but there are a few, there was some rain yesterday, so, it may help the situation.

The peak of the season though has most definately passed. If you're still out to get some, I say go now, because these next few days could well be pretty much the last except for some rare patches here and there.

I took my first lot of mushrooms for the season last night. I had actually picked them about a month or more ago, but hadn't got around to having any yet. AFter i picked them i dried them so that they were so crisp they just crumbled to powder when squished in my fingers. I chopped them all up quite a bit and stored them in a zip-lock bag. Problem is, now the texture is quite rubbery. The mushrooms were fine, didn't make me crook at all and worked a treat. But Im worried about their long-term life. What is the best way to KEEP them cracker dry???

Should I use a tupperware container with a dessacant(sp?) at the bottom and the mushrooms in the middle suspended on mesh?
Will that dry them out again as well as keeping them dry???

Whats the best dessicant to use and if it doesn't break forum guidlines, where do I aquire said dessicant in Melbourne???

Chucky, i've used the technique you've described to 'redry' mushrooms with great success. Have the mushrooms simply come into contact with regular (non dehydrated air) or is it possible that the mushrooms have come into contact with the desiccant itself? If they have come into contact with the desiccant it is practically (if not totally) impossible to get them back to cracker powder dry.

Tupperware containers are good, although if you're planning on storing them for a while make sure you check the lid is a good seal (mum's old warped tupperware is not a friend of mushrooms ;). I personally like to use glass jars with the rubber seals that are pulled down with a metal lever. You can get these from any $2 type shop or many supermarkets. You then fill the bottom 5cm or so of the jar with desicant, place mushrooms in little mush bags and suspend the mushrooms over the desiccant inside the jar (tieing the bags to the metal lever makes it easy). Place the jar in a dark dry place and there is no way your mushrooms will ever get moist/ rubbery (as this is how to dehydrate mushrooms in the first place).

If you are dealing with larger amounts, food process or coffee grind the mushrooms to a powder. Make sure the machine is cracker dry and easy to clean - read less wasted mushroom powder ;). Either cap the powder (best) and throw the caps in a empty vitamin container with several desiccant sachets, or store the powder in double/ tipple zip lock bags with all the air squeezed out and a few desiccant sachets in between each baggie layer. Pedantic mates then store the baggie inside the drying chamber but I think this is going a little overboard. Again store in dry, dark place. Mushroom powder/ shedded mushrooms do tend to reabsorb air moisture very easily, but with the above methods, mates have stored mushrooms for 18+months with no moisture reabsorbtion or loss in potency.

I use Damprid desiccant, you can buy it from all supermarkets and most hardware stores - go for the bulk pack that looks like a big milk carton, its cheaper and you don't need the stupid bucket that most smaller packs are sold with.

Thanks, very informative. I think I'd need far too many caps to do it that way with the vitamine containers. Plus, im vegan and its hard to find vegan non-gel caps.

I just want to get something straight;

Say if I put my mushrooms in say zip-lock bags with 10 grams in each and put all the bags in a well sealed container/jar. Which also has dessicant in it, will the mushrooms dry out again whilst in the plastic bags??

Or will I need to get them dry again another way before I store them like this.

Also, If the dessicant is just a powder or whatever, what should i put the dessicant in. So for example, I'll have a glass sealed jar, bags of 10grams sealed tight within the jar and then "things" with dessicant in them also in the jar. What would be good to put the dessicant in?? And would this dry out my mushrooms again and well as store them?

Also, would spraying some Freon in there also be a good idea?

Or should i not mix Freon with dessicant??

um
i would think keeping freon out would be good :)
i was recommended a plastic cup to hold the dessicant. that way when it starts looking all gooey and shitty, you can remove the cup, throw it out and replace it with a new one with fresh dessicant - seems to work well

Well I just went for a stroll and found mucho mucho mushroomy!!! They are growing again, it looks like the rain Melbourne got yesterday did us some good! Fresh photos tomorrow =)
