Well its pretty self explanatory from the title. I have been on Gabapentin on and off throughout this year 2025 going back to around April. I am not using Gabapentin for any medical reason, I just really enjoy the effects and out of all of the drugs I have tried, few give me the feeling that gaba does. Usually drugs have some type of trade-off for their "high", whether it be constipation, sleep issues, mood swings, loss of motor function. Well for me Gaba offers all of the pros of a drug, and quite literally (so far) none of the cons. I usually use 4 days on during the week and 3 days off. As of about a month ago, that went out the window and I have just been taking my dose everyday. I usually start with 600 mg in the morning, and throughout the day will redose every couple hours until around 6pm and by that time, I'm generally pretty loaded. I never go over 3000 mgs (not looking for a cookie, I know there cannot be no consequence to this large of a dose on a daily basis). My average daily dose is more like 2,400 mgs. (8 300mg capsules spread out thru the day). Well I ran out before my next refill, and so far I am 36 hours in cold turkey. I was filled with anxiety and nervousness leading up to not having any, anticipating some horrific withdrawal symptoms, and much to my surprise; nothing. And I mean nothing. I just feel stone cold sober, but not depressed, no restless legs, no sleep disturbance. At least yet, but still. I have read several reports from different sites online where people feel W/Ds as early as 12 hours after their last dose. I have been on a pretty hefty dose for over a month, without breaks, and I am relieved but shocked. How is this possible? Are there just some people who do not experience W/Ds from Gabapentin? Any input / experience here would be much appreciated

There are a few factors that could be at play here, but what you’re experiencing isn’t unusual and withdrawal in the coming hours or days cannot be ruled out.

Unlike alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, gabapentinoids don’t always produce a reliable withdrawal syndrome. Some people can stop gabapentin at 3g/day and feel perfectly fine, while others may experience severe insomnia, tachycardia, sweating, and even seizures. This variability is one reason gabapentinoids were long thought to lack true physical dependence.

A handful of studies suggest withdrawal is generally mild, even for pregabalin, which is more potent than gabapentin. For example, one study compared 600 mg/day and 300 mg/day pregabalin to 4 mg/day lorazepam and found that the pregabalin groups experienced mild—but clinically significant—withdrawal symptoms.

Although 3 g/day is a high dose, your dosing pattern is often more important than the absolute dose. One month of daily use is relatively short, and gabapentin—even at 3 g/day—isnt extremely potent.

This review of several gabapentin withdrawal cases shows a wide range in symptom onset. Some individuals experienced clinically significant symptoms within 12 hours, while others didn’t develop symptoms until days 2 or 3. While gabapentin’s half-life is about seven hours, its pharmacokinetics are more complex than that simple number suggests and half-life does not always correlate to duration of action nor onset of withdrawal.

I suspect the 12-hour onset reports you’ve seen are often influenced by comorbidities such as polysubstance use, high baseline anxiety, psychiatric illness, or kindling (where repeated withdrawals become more severe and faster) which is an effect that gabapentanoids do indeed possess.

For context, my personal experience with pregabalin withdrawal was extreme: I was taking 1–2 g/day for about a year and could not stop without medical support. At the 12 hour mark I experienced total insomnia, a racing heart, a sense of impending doom, and eventually seizures that required intravenous benzodiazepines. On the other hand, a family member stopped 300mg gabapentin four times a day with no noticeable withdrawal at all.

It's still within the cards that you will get sick, give it time. Either way you've got this, ill be praying for you :)

Wow, thank you! This has given me a ton of insight. I'm going to read through the article you linked. I am of course hoping to not get sick but now understand that it is still in the cards and I would rather have a realistic view on this, than think that I am in the clear only to be blindsided. Thank you again

You're very welcome.

The best thing for you to do is have some acceptance if withdrawals do occur. You will be able to manage it.

Good luck :)

I'd say it takes around 24 hours before I experience mild restlessness and mild anxiety. ANd maybe 4 days before I get like sweating, severe anxiety and the complete inability to sleep.
Not sure if the withdrawal timeline is dose-related, but I usually take 2100-4200mg per day. So lets say 3000mg as a median,

I have used heavy gabapentin up to 7000mg in one day for a few weeks with no wds.
It's Up up & away with Aleve , PB , & a dose & half hour with several coffees & a Dr. Pepper or 2. I smoke weed also & I am the happiest mf on the planet with my favorite music just enhancing my existence! I am a smile. I am happy for miles. I spin around like Sinatra & proclaim I am the best!!! With outstretched arms ,smiling intensely with the deep satisfaction of knowing I got to experience some great years of life with beautiful people & an intrinsic implanted equation that lets me feel we are all one.
That is what this amazing drug has done for me. I have personally made my best painting while on gabapentin. I poured all my attention, heart , soul, focus into the work & it came out so super fantastic that I love it. To me this drug is a Godsend & simply amazing. ( I know it's bad to abuse anything & I beg of any reader to be careful & exercise extreme caution when taking any substance)

When I was first prescribed Gabapentin my starting dose was 900 and I took daily for about 2 months. I stopped cold turkey for a week during that time with zero WD symptoms.

I was bumped to 1800 a couple of months later. I took that dose daily for about a month. I tried doing the same thing that I did at 900mg. I think that they started around day 3 noticeably and by day 4 my body was cramping up and extreme tense rigid muscles. I broke down and took a 300mg capsule and I went right to sleep, woke up feeling refreshed. From there on all I did was take 300mg for a week straight then stopped completely with no symptoms.
