I am starting to use Xanax so I can be more social. Unlike a lot of people I'm not using it recreationally for the sedative effect. What I want to know is, can I keep using 1mg and not build a tolerance to the anxiolytic effect thus never having to up the dose?

it depends...how many times you dose 1mg? And you dose a whole mg or , for example, two 0.5?
I think you'll build a tolerance but 1mg could still work, if you don't search the "high", for the anxiolytic effect (:
When i was using xanax, 1mg - 1.5mg always worked for me

It depends how often you take it... if you start taking it habitually then your tolerance will eventually increase as your body gets more used to the dose.

Are you planning on taking it everyday? Are you being prescribed this by a doctor or self-medicating?

I've been on alprazolam for years, and I generally take it for sleep but I also use it for occasional panic attacks ( or asleep, when I just feel anxious). I've never needed more than 1-1.5mg per dose. I DO take it every day, and I'm quite surprised that I haven't built up a tolerance to it like I have with everything else. Then again, that's the only benzodiazepine I've been on long term. The Rest of my medications are opiates/ opioids, and they are notorious tolerance building.
On the other and, I know some people who take benzos recreationally, and they take HUGE amounts.
I just figured I would chime in since you and I are taking them for the same reason.
Good luck!

This would seem to make sense, but in fact it is completely opposite. Tolerance doesn't build for the anxiolytic effects of benzos when not abused.

yeah it's surprising, even my Dr refuses to believe that tolerance does not build for the anxiolytics effects when not abused. Of course i abuse my benzos anyway but for the most part i keep it on track, so my tolerance is insanely high but nevertheless they still work for anxiety, just can't get fucked up on them. I am still jumping through hoops with my Dr to either get daily valium or zopiclone, as i have insomnia and anxiety, but medicate myself with etizolam, after 3 months, i can lower my etizolam dose and it still is effective as an anxiolytic as when i first tried it. just dont chase the high and you'll get many years of anxiolytic use from xanax.

I'd really recommend not going down this route. I got started on benzos when I was prescribed tetrazepam after injuring my neck, was only supposed to take like 0.5mg a day (so really nothing), I only used it as I was supposed to at first but that quickly turned to recreational use and before I knew it I was up to 1g a day. I didn't start upping my doses because I'd built tolerance (as wiggi explained), but because I realized I'd feel even better if I did..and that's when tolerance started building. Benzos aren't a long-term solution and it would probably be much better for you to try and deal with the anxiety in a more 'healthy' way :\ just be careful.

My mom has been on a low dose of Valium for well over 30 years. Always the same dose only used as needed. I know it's useless anecdotal evidence, but it seems plausible.

just a little anecdotal advice that might help the OP, i've found that if i abuse my clonazepam, or even take it every night like i'm prescribed to, the withdrawls are worse and i feel it when i miss a dose. lately ive been trying to only use it as needed as i have severe social anxiety/panic attacks/agoraphobia that is really debilitating, and i've found that when i JUST use it when my anxiety is unbearable it works so much better and my tolerance stays about the same with taking breaks. as long as you're not taking you're alprazolam multiple times a day and trying to chase a high, you should be good. if you use it for your anxiety only when needed, you should be okay as people have been on the same doses of benzos for years without tolerance problems. although everyone is different, what happens to me might not happen to you! much love and good luck.

I don't have them prescribed. Get them from friends. And I know tolerance can build quickly if abused, but I will stay on 1mg.

I'm not looking to get high, I use weed for that, I'm looking to use it to calm me in social situations. So I'll ask once more and I'm hoping for an answer this time, do you build tolerance to the anti anxiety effects if you remain on the same dosage daily?

And what's weird is that I feel more confident after taking a klonopin for the first time a few days ago, I have less anxiety sober. Maybe its because I have two on me right now and I know that whenever a nervous situation arises I can just pop this baby. Anyone else feel like this?

That's already been answered, no, you don't. No need to be rude :\

And yes that's normal.

Very true, being rude on this site will get you no where.

I'm closing this thread since it's already answered. If anyone isn't capable of using Google to find a source for what I posted about benzos and tolerance, feel free to PM me.
