Deputies say a Hernando County boy, 12, overdosed on several of his mother's prescription drugs and was later found to have scabies.

His mother was arrested and charged with child neglect.

On March 27, emergency crews were called to a house on Hardstone Drive in Ridge Manor, where they found a boy, 12, who had overdosed on prescription drugs, including opiates and benzodiazepines.

Thats fucked up, I believe that people should be free to possess and consume whatever substances they see fit so long as it does not interfere with ones responsibilities. What kind of irresponsible parent could let their child get their hands on not one but numerous powerful CNS depressants?

This is truly a tradgedy and I feel sorry for the child it seems never had a chance...

Even worse than the drugs he consumed was the fact he had scabies....that's horrible. Scabies is very easy to detect because it leaves fucking tracks in your skin because the little mites are burrowing through your epidermis.

This mother needs to get her priorities straight and take care of her child.

one who usually keeps all of their prescription bottles in one place.

i think we all do that o.o

i have a pouch lol, it serves me well.

indeed a fucked up situation on many levels, sadly i'm sure the conditions under which this happened could be quite common but unless something epic occurs to catch the required attention it would just as easily go without notice.

Damn this is sad as fuck i wonder if the kid knew what he was doing? At 12 years old your not just running around eating handfuls of pills for the fun of it or because you think its candy... come onn now this has gotta be somewhat the childs fault.

Yea, seriously. when i was 12 i was robbing peoples medicine cabinets for their percocet. And I aint bein sarcastic, before you take my post as a joke. I had a list of all the good drugs and their generic names that i kept in my bag so i always knew the good drugs to steal.

I dont know wat the fuck was up with the scabies, and the mother sounds pretty damn irresponsible--but lets just ask ourselves this one question.

If a parent has abusable medicine that they keep in their medicine cabinet, that they are prescribed, and their child STEALS it from them and takes it and somethin bad happens, should that parent be charged with neglect?

how bout all the parents of these perfect honor roll suburban kids who all pop oxys and shit. If they go in their parents shit and take dads roxis, OD and die, do THOSE parents deserve to get charged too?

I dont think that just cuz the kid was 12 that he was some kind of innocent know nothing who was doing that shit out of neglect. And my folks didnt neglect me. I wasnt some kind of kid with nobody watchin over me. far from it. I still did the shit I did tho and it didnt have a damn thing to do with my parents doing or not doing shit.

I didnt get to read the whole artlcle yet but i just wanted to point that out.

A 12 year old with a responsible mother and/or father who cares about them very much, can absolutely steal abusable drugs and get high on them without their parents knowing, without their parents being at fault or neglecting them.

I dont know how this situaiton was, like i said the scabies and all that, sounds like the kid definately was not gettin good parenting so I aint saying THIS situation in particular wasnt neglect. Just that in general, nobody should jump to conclusions in a story like this cuz its also just as easy for a good, caring, responsible parent to see their smart, happy, normal kid as a innocent child , not knowing that they are stealin their oxys and xanax and gettin high at night after moms in bed.

I guess wat im saying is that if you got scabies and you obviously bein neglected and you OD and die on your moms drugs, then she was neglecting you. But that a 12 year old kid od'ing and dying on moms scripts is not in itself grounds to say the parent was neglecting their kid.

Definitely not.

That wasn't the case here though.. this was an obviously neglectful parent (trash, mold, and dog shit covering the floor and furniture) who left her pills stashed in different places all over the house.

yea not to go off topic, but if you are a parent who ever had a fucked up past you wouldnt be supportin that whole evaluation deal. I known people who were ex heroin addicts, multiple felony convictions, etc, horrible pasts who anyone in "authority' would judge as bein not worthy to be a parent, but who got clean, turned their life around and are wonderful, awesome parents. think about the authorities we got these days--why would any of yall think they would be even slightly compassionate when deciding who 'gets' to have kids? Just about everybody on this site, at least anybody who ever been arrested, would prolly get rejected if we go by the uptight standards that LEO & govt' orgs. go by these days....

And yea, like i said in my first post, I didnt get to read the whole story yet but it def. seemed like this situation deserved the neglect charge i was just pointing out in general that a kid gettin high on drugs and OD'ing alone dont necessarily mean the parent was neglecting, even tho i do believe THIS mother in particular was. hope that makes it clearer...
