Twelve young people were rushed to the hospital overnight after they overdosed on a powerful drug that apparently was mixed into their drinks without their knowledge at a party, police said.

Most of the victims were young women who attend Central Washington University. Detectives are now investigating whether they were given spiked drinks to render them defenseless against a sexual assault - but were saved by the timely arrival of police at the scene.

"It's certainly a concern we have - that the women were targeted moreso than the men for possibly nefarious reasons," said Rosyln-Cle Elum Police Chief Scott Ferguson. "The majority of the people affected by the drugs were females."

"roofies" is not specific to flunitrazepam unless they knew about the preparation. I was told I was given roofies in a jello shot when I was a kid; later on someone else told me it was "a type of roofie called Placidyl."
 
Sounds like GHB or roofies which refer almost alwyas to Rohypnol,not placidyls or other pills,since Roofie is slanf for Royhpnol or who ever it is spelled,the term "roofie" comes from the drug name Royphnol whowever it's spelled..a "roofie" is not a Placidyl, but some may call anything a "roofie" even tho it is not..that does not make the vast majority of people who know Roofies as being slang for Rohypnol or whatver wrong...a placidyl or any downer is not a "roofie" its a downer...people who take slang for something and use it for what it is not are usually uneducated about the real drug and the slang for it...calling Placidyl a "roofie: is like calling cocaine -smack or H or something ,it is just not the same and the slang of "roofies" is not a blanket term...unless someone is trying to impress someone with having "roofies" when they do not,which is a pretty lame way to try and impress someone IMO..

12 roofied chicks and no rape? That just doesn't make sense to me. Also, the fact that this article still just says the drugs will be determined make me feel like the initial story was roofies. They found nothing, and then they just stick with the story until it blows over. I mean, I've seen masses of females (and males) just completely fucked up off just alcohol and lets not forget this was a college party. The amount of binge drinking and group drinking (Hey lets all take a shot) combined with the low occurrence of roofie use, makes me think this is just another scare story.

Who knows though, I'm open to being wrong but it just seems like every time this kinda story comes up...
 
Regardless of whatever their drinks were laced with, this is pretty fucked up. Then again, unless it's a party where I know a large majority of people there and trust them (whether it be through my greek life at my school or my graduate department), I always BYOB. Or, if I don't, I'll only drink beer in cans/bottles that I open myself, and I even bring it to the bathroom with me. This is unfortunate that someone did that, I guess there being a "large event" going on according to the article was a likely cause for random people to get together and something bad to happen. Also, I noticed that girls in general, tend to not BYOB but assume by having a vagina they will get some for free...I'm not like that (with weed either) but its another reason why more girls ended up drugged I think - they seem to like the liquor based mixed drinks that are usually provided.

Just my opinion, from someone who is a young female, parties, and in this case thinks that whomever did it also knew the chicks were more likely to drink the punch, since a couple guys did need medical help also. I get the feeling the outcome wasn't anything that the person who spiked the alcohol really even attended for, or thought could happen...perhaps misinformation they decided to use in a irresponsible and negative way?
 
I saw it on the news today. "Don't drink from the red cups". The guy said he drank out of the red cup and couldn't swallow the drink, and spit it out.

Yes the house looks creepy, but its a college party house what do you expect?

The street term "Roofies" is slang for Rohypnol which is the pharmecutical name for Flunitrazepam. Placidyl is Ethchlorvynol, so very different chemicals. If someone is using the term "roofies" for Ethchlorvynol they're definitely misguided as to what they're talking about.

I know ethchlorvynol its fucking lovely and no longer existent AFAIK :( it was my second real high (1st was LSD). No one wanted to rape nobody where they were giving out the jello shots: the plan was just to get fucked up (plan was a success)

Think about it tho: the people that talk to newspapers ain't Bluelighters (who for the most part know their shit). Lots of regular people use "roofie" for anything that dissolves in alcohol and causes amnesia, extreme sedation and/or general anaesthesia. The article says several people at the party said the adulterant was "definitely roofies". Two things immediately come to mind:

  1. The journalist ain't a well-informed drug user, otherwise he would've asked them how they knew the ID of the adulterant.
  2. Either the interviewees were privy to what happened or they were using "roofie" non-specifically.

Reasons why so many girls(and guys) end up dead drunk:

1. Relying on provided drinks - usually liquor, humm...drink 5% beer or 40+% liquor....hummm....also means ya probably dont drink any times besides heavy partying. I'd say this means a lower tolerance in general which leads to more intoxication and faster
2. Disliking the taste of beer - leads to drinking liquor/mixed drinks and also heavily flavored drinks so ya can't taste the alcohol (very dangerous)
3. oh I am sure there are more but i dont really care...
