Opioids 100 year-old opium?

I recently found two bottles in an old wooden box, in my grandmother's basement. One is Mrs Winslow's Soothing Syrup and the other is Dr. Munn's Elixir of Opium. Both bottles have long evaporated, yet contain a decent amount of residue. The former is still corked, the latter is not.

Call it whatever you will, but I am curious as hell if I can get high off this vintage Opium, and about the safety of doing so.

I will be posting pictures.
 
I would test it on a lab rat.......I definitely wouldn't try it out myself. Also, you still can't be sure after trying it out on a rat........

I know its really cool/awesome to find vintage meds as you did but 100 years old is like 80 years more than I would try. My cut off would be 20 years but that's just me.........good luck & let's see those cool pictures.

I took some Codeine that expired in 1986 about two years ago... 'twas good.
 
I dont think it will hurt you..if anything it would just weaken over time...that is usually what happens with out of date meds. Dont throw the bottles away..a lot of people collect such items...guaruntee you could sell them on ebay if nothing else...i love old stuff like that.

I LOVE shit like this, I definately can't give any advice on the safety of the material but you've got yourself a nice piece of drug history right there. I agree with missmeyet, you would easily be able to find a buyer for those bottles after you milk them of their goodies. I can't tell by the photo but is the bottom quarter inch or so of the opium elixer solid residue or is it just the light playing tricks on me?
 
They are destined to be stash bottles after I grab a couple new corks from the hardware store.

I have considered making homemade laudanum, so if I decide to, I will have appropriate bottles as well.

All right. I thought "Fuck it. I have undoubtedly put more dangerous things into my system." I added some hot water to the Dr. Munn's Opium Elixer, shook it for some time, and drank. It was very bitter (a good sign). This was 40 minutes ago and I am moderately high. A pleasant surprise, as I was not expecting anything to happen.

Very similar to 5 large poppy pods or maybe 60mg of Morphine, imo =D
 
Hahahaha I've heard of scoring expired meds off medicine cabinets but this goes a step further!

That is so awesome though not only because of the antique quality of it but also because it got you high as well, you literally just got high off history hahaha.
 
Not saying I wouldn't havee done the exact same thing but it's a tad bit reckless dosing without knowing exactly how much opium is in the bottle don't ya think? Either way I'm jealous, have fun!
 
^I am not alone.

I just cut the cork out of the "Soothing Syrup." It smells like licorice and vanilla.
 
That's seriously cool, I envy you for finding stuff like that in your family's house lol!

Would keep the bottles too, they will have high value, they already do prboably in fact, both historical and financial
 
Morphine eventually degrades in air to inactive things that, at best, will make you vomit (e.g. apomorphine). It's probably not useful for much more than a curiosity by the time about 20 years has passed.

If the bottles were stored in a reasonably out-of-the way place, there's a chance some of it would still survive, trapped in an air-free pocket of crusted out latex.
