Well, essentially, when a sailing boat capsizes, often the mast snaps in two. If the mast was composed of multiple segments that were pulled together into a rigid structure, and that mechanism released upon capsizing, then the mast would flex through the water during the capsize, and not break up. Many sailing boats are designed to right themselves after capsizing. Generally not racing sail-boats though.
