(CBS/AP) OGDEN, Utah - Authorities said a Utah police officer has died following a shootout that left five other officers and a suspect wounded.

The shots rang out shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday as an anti-drug strike team was serving a warrant at a residence on Jackson Avenue, in Ogden, said police spokesman Lt. Tony Fox.

Ogden police said in a statement early Thursday that agent Jared Francom died from his wounds following Wednesday night's shooting. The team serving the search warrant involved officers from the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.

The six officers were hospitalized as was the suspect, Fox told The Associated Press.

Police said Francom was a seven-year veteran and is survived by his wife and two young children.

Police blocked off the area from 34th Street and Jackson Avenue to 32nd Street and a SWAT team took positions.

Authorities have not released information on how the remaining officers and the suspect were shot.

Good fucking riddance to the fascist pig :p

I don't see it that way. The way I see it, some cops who were brainwashed by government and religious propaganda were victims of the drug war.

They were too ignorant and/or scared to realize what was happening when their bosses told them this news, which should have shocked and astonished everyone in the room: instead of sending you after murderers and kidnappers and rapists, or evil corporations' CEOs, we are going to send you to get people who simply want to get high, or to profit from others getting high. Getting high is a normal human desire, and exists in all cultures and from all periods of history, but we are trying to stop people getting high in certain ways (the ways that don't lead to a profit for the tobacco, alcohol, or pharmaceutical industries). This is a victimless "crime", but we will send you in with guns, taking away the privacy of the people involved in addition to their right to explore their own consciousness, their right to party, and their right to pain relief.

Everyone within earshot should have jumped and screamed "holy shit - what in hell are you talking about!"

But they were too anesthetized by propaganda and religion, and simply followed what they were told.

Stupid and sad? Unquestionably.
Deserving to die? I don't think so.

I don't see this drug war as an "us vs. them" situation.
Instead, I see it as "us vs. some government bullshit", where "us" includes all people, even if they don't realize that their rights have been taken from them.

Many people relinquish their basic rights by "belonging" to a group, and give up their responsibility to create their own moral code by simply going along with what the group says is moral.
This is especially true for those who believe in political parties, and those who believe in religion.
They don't deserve to die for doing so, though they do deserve to have the sheets torn out from under them in order to wake them up, I would say.

I am not a fan of "cops" in general, but this cop was a human being with a family.
Recently, ex-cops have become a powerful weapon in the fight to end the drug war.
He might have had some brighter future, someday, in some way.
I see it as a senseless waste of human life, and blame it on the drug war.
Nobody - ever - should be arrested, or die, because of drugs.
The whole idea is so ridiculous that we should all be laughing about it - but it has become our sad reality.
I still cannot celebrate the death of anyone, cop or otherwise, due to the drug war.
