MOSCOW, March 26. /ITAR-TASS/. - Russia will ban methadone, a narcotic drug used in the treatment of drug addiction, in Crimea, Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) chief Viktor Ivanov said on Wednesday, March 26.

Methadone has become a criminal business in Ukraine. Ivanov said its efficacy was not clinically proved, but there was hard statistics showing that the number of deaths from its use in the United States and Great Britain had increased considerably as addiction to methadone is much stronger than that to heroin.

“Methadone is not a cure. Practically all methadone supplies in Ukraine were circulating on the secondary market and distributed as a narcotic drug in the absence of proper control. As a result, it spread to the shadow market and traded there at much higher prices. It became a source of criminal incomes,” Ivanov said.

Oh my God, these poor people who depend on the liquid handcuffs are going to be pushed to their limits with respect to tolerance to sheer agonizing pain and discomfort. My heart goes out to them - even the ones who foolishly voted in favor of the Russian annexation of Crimea.

This crooked piece of shit Putin and his toothless lapdogs continue to suck like infants on their bottles of vodka while having the nerve to dictate to others what they can and cannot ingest. Arrogant assholes.

So inhumane. But, Russia. Putin will destroy the entire country and everyone in it before he allows it to become a nice place to live.

This made me giggle.. not for the awful plight that now faces the addicts who were on methadone, but rather at Russias utterly proved third world status, especially when it comes to human rights and science that does not entail weapons. Nice olympics but I bet if we looked at where all the technology and what not came from the only thing Russia will be holding is the bill.

Maybe they should try better restrictions on codeine in Russia. I know its not really relevant to this exact situation. But Russia clearly needs more methadone availability and less codeine to keep people from cooking up kerosene and gasoline laced desomorphine.

They have made codeine harder to get. The country is so corrupt though that it's still sold under the counter without a prescription.

This is criminal and downright sadistic.
I hope there is plenty of *cheap* Afghan brown being channeled into Crimea for these poor people.
What an absolutely brutal action to be so swiftly put into place. If only other bureaucratic decisions could be so incredibly efficient.

Methadone withdrawal is no joke....

No, it's not.

I'm sure many of them are in a world of agonizing pain right now.

I've tried to kick the habit myself countless times before I went on MMT. It was nothing compared to how I felt when I went into withdrawal while on 200mg of methadone daily. Wish I could help them somehow. Fuck this drug war.

... is this basically that "crocodile" shit that hit the news in the last year or so..?

I cant imagine living in a place like that I hate the U.S. enough but fuck russia with a big american veiny dick full of opiates.

Haha judging by wikileaks, diplomacy is much over-rated & highly under-utilised!

I'd like to see the kinda candor wikileaks exposes in secret documents more in day-to-day "diplomacy". It would make global geo-politics so much more amusing & fascinating, but would perhaps make life itself a little more dangerous.

I don't fully understand methadone, but is it more addictive? and is it an effective way to get people clean? I hear of a lot of people around me abusing it, and people taking methadone and still doing other forms of dope. I don't understand it fully so forgive my noobness

Like other drugs, everyone reacts a little differently to methadone.

That being said, in my experience:

- Methadone is much harder to stop than heroin, morphine, hydromorphone, oxycodone, and so forth (possibly due to its longer half-life) if you're looking to do the cold turkey method, or a quick detox.
- Methadone is fairly easy to get off of if you are decreasing your dosage slowly enough for your body to adapt, but it gets harder the lower your dosage goes (especially below 60 mg, I find).
- Methadone withdrawal is the worst I've ever experienced, as it lasts much longer than other common opioids, and feels just as intense.
- Depending on your tolerance level, methadone can get you really stoned, but I wouldn't recommend it for this purpose for several reasons.
- I wouldn't consider myself "clean" just because I switched to methadone from heroin, or another opioid
- MMT (Methadone Maintenance Treatment) helped me pay off all my debts, and it's benefited me so much in general that I usually say to people that it saved my life. In other words, it has benefited me a lot more than any harm caused.
- Methadone is one of (if not, the) most sedating opioids I've ever experienced.
- I've had better results with methadone in relation to cravings than buprenorphine.

Re. "addiction potential" - If you enjoy IVing your dope, then perhaps you'll find methadone isn't as addictive as, say, heroin, because there's no rush. On the other hand, if you simply eat all your dope, methadone might be more addictive.

I don't like using the "a" word, as it's used way too much.

What the Russian government has done to Crimeans who are dependent on methadone is very cruel and unethical. IMO, they deserve to experience the pain they have inflicted, but unfortunately it's not my call.
