The Running Sensation called ‘Runner’s high’ offers the same effects as marijuana

That relaxed & feel good sensation you get known as runner’s high is much closer to how you feel after having marijuana than you think, as suggested by researchers, the endorphins get undeserved credit for this wave of euphoria.

(...)

Researchers from the Central Institute of Mental Health of the University of Heidelberg found other compounds which may lead to the runner’s high called endocannabinoids. After an intense and long run, our body produces beta-endorphin called opioid as well as anandamide called endocannabinoid as per the scientists. Just one is small enough to reach the brains receptors. And it’s not the endorphins.

Endocannabinoids aren’t naturally produced in the body. But it is a molecule found in marijuana or cannabis. Studies have shown its numbers spike after long training sessions & intensive exercise. This is what made them take the study forward. Researchers started experimenting on mice by watching them while they run on a wheel.

They suggested that the rodents were feeling something like runner’s high that is the reason they found it nice to run. It is unlikely that they cared about their health or were trying to lose weight. In mice, decreased and calm anxiousness is expressed by their behavior. After they run, the chances of them spending time in well-lit areas increases whereas the nervous rodents usually stick to the dark.

Even though endocannabinoids and endorphins spiked, researchers had artificially cancelled out effects of each of them. When they had blocked the endorphin effect, nothing changed. But when they blocked endocannabinoids, the high disappeared completely and the rodents weren’t relaxed or calm anymore.

Nice thread slimvictor.

This is the kid of information, that motivates me to start up hospital rehabilitation and gym exercise.

^ Yes, I hear you.
While I don't believe that the highs from cannabis and running are exactly the same, I have felt runner's high, and it feels wonderful.
In fact, I have been training for a 10k that is coming next weekend. Not a super long distance, but enough for me to feel really good. I have been running or biking almost every day, in addition to yoga 3 times a week. And I haven't used any drugs in a month or so, other than about 5 drinks of alcohol per week (and 2-3 coffees a day).
I have really been enjoying the clean, sober feeling I get from hard work, lots of exercise, and little drug intake.
So, I urge you to do what you know you need to do, speed king.

I always thought "runners' high" was closer to endogenous opiates (ie endorphins) rather than cannabinoids...

That may be true - I have read similar things elsewhere.
But I have very limited experience with opiates, and don't even like them much.
Runner's high (which is a misnomer, because I get it even more strongly from intense yoga or swimming) feels really good, all day. I do feel comfortable, peaceful, lazy and slow, and "high", so it may be like opiates.

I've heard this kind of thing before but as someone who's experienced both runner's high and weed hundreds of times I don't find them to be AT ALL similar.

On the other hand, I actually feel that runner's high and Kratom have quite a bit in common.

Not SO much that I'd say they are at all the same, but it's the most similar drug to the runner's high IMO and they are even better together.

I don't care what science supports the connection between runner's high and weed though, I just don't feel they are similar at all.
