Despite currently living in the west I haven't been able to get a proper mental health support, but for the past 14 years it started with me being diagnosed with Borderline Peraonality Disorder, later about 3 years ago it was ruled more of cyclothemia, and with a lot of digging I was able to identify that it was ADHD and got diagnoaed with ADHD mixed with Autism (low degree).
I can have social anxiety among some social circles and not others, but I still feel I have to mask it, I have found it most difficult at work, it feel I am so uncomfortable around such environment, this wasn't the case in my early jobs until I was 22. I have gone through through cycles of depression for the past 13 years, when it peaked I wasnt able to look at people eyes. It is during the 3rd year dealing with this depression that straight up wonderied If I was crazy, given that they say a crazy person doesn't actually know they are.

But throughout I have acheived quite well with so many setbacks and getting back up, I have been top of my class throughout my schooling, and ended up with a scholarship to Uni and later at a multinational. But with marriage, postgraduate studies, asylum (I am a refugee), and ending up homeless (crashing at friends houses until someone accepted my letting application) the past 3 years have been a roller coaster, and for the first time life is dictacting how my life goes more than I did. This period has stripped me naked in front of myself and i was able to reflect and recognize all my flows. I was happy to know others deal with the issues I am facing and I was relieved with the diagnosis that there is a way for me to overcome these flows and make a positive change in my life.

I drink occassionally (Socially; mostly, 3 beers a week), I could take a couple if hits of weed (maybe twice a year) socially as well, it helped me calm my racing and chaotic brain. I have tried coke twice, LSD once (Actually it is after this LSD experience that I felt my brain chemcials were fixed and I ended up stopping anti depressants for 3 years). Felt quite relaxed in my own skin but had some social anxiety depending on the situation, it was a period where I worked from home for 4 years.

To navigate through tough work and academic commitments I used Khat (A stuimulant that contains Cathine). Helped me focus while my life was chaotic, finish the tasks I have and actually progress on my schooling and career. 2 months ago I was told I am vitamin b12 diffecient, took one injection that resulted in me feeling energetic for 2 days and then a crash. Which makes me wonder where the issue is exactly is it adhd, autism, depression, or simply a b12 deficiency that is making me energy less. It breaks my heart when people speak about me (Even in my presence) and say growing up everyone expected I would be the most successful and acheive what no other would acheive, but apparently I am not.

I was working on my thesis, and as a result I was chewing qat for 5 weeks straight. After submission, it was such a relief, and I started my Adhd meds which felt amazing, on Vyvanse I was able to handle house chores, tackled open items on my to do lists, set plans, and I feel on medications, I am able to properly declutter my brain and put it in a paper for clear planning and action. I was on a roll, I felt with this medication, I am able to manage adhd, and get my life together, started journaling, for the first time in life I put my brain into organized plans on a paper, reflected on things I have been doing wrong (things I didn't realize before) and started setting up plans and tracking the actions to train my brain into giving up baf habits and train on good ones.

4th day on Vyvanse I had a lot of work so I decided to chew Khat, it has always helped me with the tasks that are difficult to get done. I didn't know any better, and later learned I shouldn't mix it with Vyvanse. Mixing the two resulted in a complete exhaustion for complete 4 days, racing heart, high blood pressure and jaw clenching, I made mistakes I wouldn't normally do, it felt like I was on a high dose of cocaine. To remedy it, I decided to pause Vyvanse for 2 days. These side effects were alarming, so I kept reading about it, and just as I was about to decide to quit vyvanse. It started getting better. However, I saw how hyper a friend gets when he is on cocaine, and that image got stuck with me and I became afraid thats how I look to others. It is my 3rd week, I feel brain has clarity, but social anxiety and being away from home feels tough. Not quite sure if it is depression I am going through again (I have gone through a similar episode 10 years ago) or it is a result of the medicine, or mixing it with Khat 3 weels ago? It is worth noting that I have never experienced such side effects from qat, it rather works quite well with me. But 5 weeks straight, zero social life and studying 16 hours a day may have made it worse?

In a couple of social gathering I felt agigated, aggrevated, and wanting to withdraw. Today I started a training course I have been excited about. I felt confident and it was a good thing to compliement the medications and my healing jourmey! I had social anxiety among the crowd, despite trying to control it, it is a lil difficult to feel at ease especially that I live in the west and there is too much hostility toward my race/religion background. I am trying to reflect on my actions, but I feel it doesn't match the hostility and the uncomfortable feeling I got. I was very uncomfortable that my brain was simply shutting down.

I think mix of emotional dysregulation, autism, adhd, and likely my ethnicity, just makes it exhausting for me to mask how I feel and just keep getting on with life like that. People were avoiding me in the course today, and that made me feel like I don't wanna be there. I realized my depression and decided not to force myself through an unpleasant experience and withdraw from the course instead. I apologized to the instructor, and to the class that I am not feeling well and took my departure, what was sad is that one members comment hinted that they are better off.

Recently I realized that in life when I see and know an experience I am getting into is disturping, I tend to push through, not quit and put myself through its misery. I decided not to this time and requested a withdrawl when I felt It might be a bad experience. I feel like this is my first time to straight up quit and I am ok with it.

My question: would mixing cathine and Vyvanse result in a damage that I will have to deal with, I dont feel comfortable sharing this with doctors. I wont do it again, I used it to medicate, and now that I am getting the help I need, I quitted. With Vyvanse I am feeling so much clarity and hope. when at home or in among my support network, it feels like things and life will be ok, but not in unfamiliar circles where I work on masking and burying how I feel, it feels exhausting and that I am failing at it.

Is it possible that this isn't a side effect and I am merely more aware of my anxiety since I am on vyvanse. Should I stop Vyvanse, I am currently on 70mg? Is it causing this depression and anxiety, maybe even paranoia.

I don't have a support network here, just my wife which I think she is bearing more than she can handle.

Anything in specific on where Khat/Vyvanse could have lead me to this experience, Anything I can do to fix this? Symptoms I feel are being on edge at times, or more hyperactive in social interactions (maybe too much at times). The anxiety and social fear is there maybe from childhood traumas I am not able to identify or bypass. It just became a norm that sometimes I am able to mask, other times not. Sadly I was never able to get a proper access to a proper mental care to process this, and cant afford private one.

Mental illness and Substance abuse go hand to hand. I have Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar type. I hope you feel better.
Thanks man, wish you well as well.

Worth noting I am truly cognizant of addictions, qnd is very careful. I am curious, I like to try things, but don't do them again. I maybe having an addictive personality but truly it doesnt seem like iy. I used Qat to do work and dont use it otherwise. Smoke weed when I feel my brain needs a rest when I am no longer functioning (twice a year). Quitted smoking for 10 months now.

I am very career focused and goal oriented, however with the tornados that keep storming my life and complete unstability I keep starting over, while not quite well, just masking and trying to beat it through thinking positively and getting up.

Honestly this is one of the more interesting posts. Dataguy, I want you to get responses, maybe moving to the healing forum? Would you be ok with that?

If you are prescribed Vyvanse I suggest you speak to your provider. Your provider may suggest a lower dose or combine with another medication? At any rate professional advice might be your best option.

Agreed, a few people on a drug healing board may have had something similar and have had resolve.

Since I am not a moderator trip reports I can't move the thread but Misterr Ed can. I would move it to the healing forum or dark side. I think it may get more responses and who ever really talks about khat?

crap I'm not seeing moderator tools to relocate thread.
ha, yeah I get caught up in trying too. Sometimes for too much time.

I think if you close the thread, and from the trip reports forum click the edit square at the end of the title. Then i believe you an move it. Edit>move thread

Hey @DataGuy :)

Damn, what a life. I have a lot of experience with refugees. Some of my experiences watching people like yourself try to integrate is one of the many lessons of gratitude I have received in my life. I know what it feels like to feel alone. I can't imagine how alone it feels to be in a new place without resources. I had to start a job teaching in Northern Iraq a long time ago. I remember how confusing it felt being there. I got handed $300 on my second day though, so I had little to actually worry about.

I'm happy you have been able to find some stability. Welcome to America, by the way. We are a country made of immigrants and you're always welcome if you're willing to be a part of our community with us.

We are not doctors. What you are describing, the BPD, the Cyclothymia etc. those are some heavy diagnoses man. You have to take any of our advice with a grain of salt. We can offer you guidance that might help you make your next decision, but you always want to trust your doctor, as shitty as they can be, they are your best bet.

The thing with Amphetamines is that they are going to boost your Dopamine. This is going to provide feelings like motivation, confidence, enhanced creativity etc. However, it also is producing CNS stimulation. These two effects are not the same. Follow me here. You might have a deficit in these areas like confidence, for instance. The stimulant is providing you with those objectively "better" feelings, but it is still increasing your heart rate, blood pressure etc.

You are, in simple terms, deficient in something that Amphetamine is providing help with. However, you could be on a dose that is too high. You are enjoying the level of Dopamine provided though you are also likely over-stimulated. I likely think you need to lower your dose of Lisdexamfetamine. Experiment with a lower dose and see what happens.

You need to pay attention to your entire body/health. You need to eat good, unprocessed food, get enough sleep, potentially take a Vitamin of some kind. You need to get a healthy amount of sleep. All of these things have great meaning to your overall presence in life. Don't discount their importance. Are you getting physical activity? These things are not optional as much as life tells us they are. If you are not eating right, getting exercise and having plenty of time without your phone, you're not doing it right.

Consider the possibility of trying to increase your levels of Dopamine. You can do this through physical exercise, certain supplements (Murcune Pruriens sic). Maybe once you recalibrate some of these things and try a lower dose of your stimulant, you will find some relief. If you want my opinion, I wouldn't try to solve any problems using other psychiatric drugs. I just don't think it's a good idea to mess with your equilibrium.

I recommend supplements to people that I know work.

Rhodiola Rosea, Saffron - To name just a couple. I've known countless people myself included who have had life-changing effects from supplements like these. Another one I do is Reishi Mushrooms. If you want to talk more about this stuff, I'm always down.

Lots of good advice from @Keif' Richards above.

I would note that while I don't know much about khat or even stimulants for that matter, my sense is that combining these two stimulants could lead to unexpected synergy and stronger than expected effects and/or side-effects. It's probably best to only use one or the other at any given time, or at least lower the amphetamine dose a lot when taking the khat.

I don't think any of us are in a position to diagnose you for any kind of mental condition, but it sounds to me like you are just chronically stressed and exhausted. This probably makes it more difficult to process the emotions you experience on a day-to-day basis. I know from experience that academic work can be extremely demanding, but hopefully you can find some way to carve out time for more rest and relaxation.

As noted above, exercise can also be helpful if engaged in moderately. If you have access to any natural spaced, going walking or hiking in nature can be very good for managing stress. Do you have any in-person friends you can hang out with? If not, then maybe try to meet someone else on your campus. They may not share you culture, but you may be able to find others who can at least relate to your feelings of isolation.

I should have said some stuff about Khat/Qat in my original post. I'm realizing now we are operating in this thread on the belief that everyone is familiar with this substance.

Khat/Qat (Catha Edulis) is a flowering plant/shrub that is native to to the Horn of Africa. This is the epicenter of this substance's usage. It is also used in the periphery of the Horn, for instance you will see greater use in South Africa. Furthermore, it is likely to be more popular among Muslims, likely due to history of trade routes and interconnectedness of the region. One point further, you will find Khat being sold and used in Somalian/Eritrean/Ethiopian communities globally. For instance, I met a cab driver in Burlington, VT who was a Somali expat and he was chewing Khat.

Khat is most commonly chewed and absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth (Buccal Absorption). The methodology is pretty much analogous to how one would use Chewing Tobacco (Dip). This is essentially the only route of administration used.

Khat's pharmacologically active constituent is known as Cathinone.

You may have heard the term before, as there is an entire sub-species of stimulants that are known as Cathinones, with Cathinone as the eponymous member. Cathinone has often been distilled from the plant and methylated to produce Methcathinone, a stimulant comparable to Amphetamine in potency, but weaker.

Cathinone itself, on the spectrum of CNS stimulants, occupies a region between Caffeine and Amphetamine. It is like Caffeine, with a small hint of CNS activity that lets you know you are using a drug. It is fairly self-limiting naturally, as the stuff has to be chewed, absorbed etc.

I have chewed Khat and like I said, found it to be somewhere halfway between Caffeine and Amphetamine. Anyone else who wants to chime in with better information, feel free.

The concern I have with the combination of Khat and Amphetamine is that you are chasing CNS stimulation. You are also using a substance with a great deal of peripheral nervous stimulation (Khat). So, if you are chasing this CNS stimulation, I can see how one could easily lose control and cause cardiovascular distress in the process. Ultimately, if I see someone using both simultaneously, it is a sign that they are chasing a high as opposed to using the two in a functional way. That is just me though.

Dataguy,

Please be careful mixing khat and Vyvanse. There are risks outside of the cardiovascular issues that can present. You're diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, which can sometimes cause transient psychotic symptoms. Stimulants like khat and Vyvanse can also cause psychotic symptoms if you overdo them. I would imagine the risk of psychosis is even larger if you combine stimulants. So if you're going to keep doing khat, consider lowering your Vyvanse dose, as I think some have already suggested, or take your Vyvanse and reduce your khat intake. The last thing you want is to develop a psychotic break.
