Noisy neighbours, any experiences?

Something I've been fortunate not to have experienced extensively, but something that can be a complete nightmare when finding oneself in the wrong place.

Experiences?

They say humans are resourceful and adaptive, but I could never fathom how anyone could simply become accustomed to a noisy home environment or disruptive neighbours.

Places like a college dorm or student accommodation is an exception as typically everyone is up partying together, but for regular working people, some idiot neighbour that insists on playing music too loud or bouncing a basketball in their apartment or whatever other crap noisy neighbours get up to?

I know it's not uncommon, but managing those situations, has anyone here actually done so successfully?

When I was in uni our house was pretty quiet but the house next to us was not.

We spoke to them face to face and they didn’t listen.

Their windows were all smashed mysteriously by someone and it was deep winter… they were very quiet after that happened.

Who knows who did it??🤷🏼‍♀️

It was Belfast though… it has a rep and every surname has an association. They knew ours.

apartment living just sucks, especially the low-rent types i'm used to. sooner or later i always seem to end up with a nuisance neighbour.

some people you can't negotiate with, they're just self-absorbed and think their right to enjoy their hole trumps everyone else's.

i think i have at most one more move left in me before i'm ready to get a house just to not have to share walls with anyone

our upstairs neighbors are super fucking loud. They love to stomp and we have low ceilings which is awful. Can't wait to move out from here.

Also 2 floors up still have their ac in - it's 45 degrees at night at this point - why the fuck do you have an ac running at this point.... people are strange.

Ya I agree mostly.

Personally, I haven't had to deal with the issue. Even when I lived in public housing, a group home, and a shelter. There was my roommate in a sober house who would leave the TV on pretty loudly all night - that was a tough situation because he was seemingly reasonable but ultimately just a huge liar - like complying but then reverting back.

But once he started stealing my bananas and crackers I turned up the heat on him. I let him know I knew without attacking him about it. Once he knew that I knew and was angry and wouldn't let the issue slide, he magically stopped. I had to be strategic about how I approached it but only because he was a career criminal / compulsive liar.

Anyway, my experiences may not be relatable here, so advice would be formulate a good reason to approach them. Check to see how reasonable they are first and don't attack them. If they understand, and still don't care, then maybe it's time to get someone else involved.

While taking matters in to your own hands is tempting.. I'd try to exhaust all other options first.

You never really get used to it, you just get exhausted by it. The most successful approach I've seen is keeping a detailed log with dates and times, then going to the council or landlord with evidence rather than just a verbal complaint. Once there's a paper trail, they actually have to act.
