$70 million ecstasy bust in Sydney.

THE biggest-ever haul of safrole oil, capable of making at least $70 million of ecstasy, was seized at Port Botany.

Three Sydney men were arrested yesterday after more than 2800 litres of oil in three separate shipments between April and August were seized.

The safrole oil, an extract of sassafras plants, was hidden inside bottles labelled as hair and cleaning products.

Customs and Border Protection staff found the consignments, imported from China.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Kevin Zuccato said: "This is a significant blow, as far as I'm concerned, a lethal blow to this particular syndicate.

"We're not here to play. We're here to do as much damage to these people as we possibly can."

Investigations into the syndicate were continuing and more arrests are possible.

A 27-year-old Lurnea man and a North Parramatta man, 35, were charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, while a Merrylands man, 33, was charged with dealing in proceeds of crime. All are expected to appear in Sydney's Central Local Court today.

The figures are slightly off, but you can tell where they get the estimates. At $25 per pill, they're suggesting that each litre of safrole oil yields 1000 pills. I recall reading somewhere that the actual yield is much higher (about 1500 pills per 500ml). I suppose that would depend on the amount of MDMA you wanted in each pill.

Even with the conservative estimated yield, we're talking about 2.8 MILLION pills.

A sad day indeed.

This is reallllly terrible news. reallly bad i cant believe this. just when things start to pick up everything gets destroyed by the pigs... argh.

booooo!

What a cunt of a peice of news. It would be far better for society if the feds left MDMA alone and wasted their time and our fucking tax dollars on meth instead...

god damm this sucks so so so so so so so much :! just as we were getting a nice little flow happening, faarrrrkkkk. i hope the feds only scratched the surface and got a little bit of what was coming threw.... time will tell

In the scheme of things, $70 million is nothing in the drugs trade, even for a small country like Aus. Who knows what else got through while the AFP were concentrating on this bust.

For all I (/we) know, it was a decoy and we're in for a summer of love...

yes, 70 mil in the drug trade could be considered nothin... but were talkin about the MDMA trade, not the whole illicit drug market, and when you compare the amount of MDMA pills floatin around this island to the amount of adulterated pills, MDMA (although slowly makin a come-back) is a scarce thing...

not to mention, it seems all of the current MDMA pills originate from NSW/Sydney, I really don't think this was no decoy.. I think we're fucked...

haha, i think your right. were fucked.

Its not actually $70M of safrole oil though is it, only a potential (media/random number generator) value of the end product.

I'd hope that the value of the raw product isn't enough to put put a dent in the already limited supply. I'd also hope that the guys arrested are just unlucky couriers and don't have any info on possible labs.

This sux bigtime, but yeah if they were doing it right they would just be couriers.

Lucky Ive stocked up on some sweet caps and ying yangs for the summer season, so i should be set. Pumped for kev and sharkey end of nov!!

Off the top of my head, a decent chemist will yield 10% MDMA from good Safrole oil. Taking this into account it doesn't seem to be as large a bust as you would first think, but it's still no street corner bullshit. We need all the PLUR we can get in these tough times.

FUCK YOU LAW ENFORCEMENT!! YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELVES TO BLAME FOR MORE DANGEROUS DRUGS TAKING PREVELANCE OVER MDMA!

I guess you're right there.. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

I read somewhere that European cooks can do this. Not sure about Australia.

I believe the Dutch use piperanol instead of safrole oil.. Although MDMA is the end product it's believed that using safrole oil makes better MDMA

Hahaha. It's much better then the mothership is landing.
Landed definitely sounds more like it's already hit the shores (provided it is even imported)

Mothership landing to me could mean many more things, a big lab being set up.
Or the end of a big cook.

The authorities are constantly trying to stamp down on MDMA. Just look at the media, in the last two years I've seen far more Ecstasy bashing posters and adds then in the past.
And this was during Ecstasy's biggest drought.
I do hope your right though Kroniic, hopefully Australia wide too. The nation needs some luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurv.

I still think this is a significant bust. Targeting the Safrole oil, however I know that there has been plenty around this year. Melbourne aswell as Sydney.
Guess we just have to wait and see.

... no, it was 2,800 *litres* of safrole. Enough to make (at conservative yield rates) almost 3 *million* 120mg doses of MDMA. Just consider the logistics of trying to import 2,800 litres of anything. It'd be close to 5 tonnes of liquid.

Let's hope so. Even still, they can be leaned on or coerced into giving up information that leads to the labs or other syndicate members.

@kroniic: that sounds awfully promising. Fingers crossed. :)

^ Agreed, I've removed a few posts but think this thread has pretty much run its course. Feel free to PM myself or another mod if anyone has anything further to add that's useful.
