Films that depict actors smoking cigarettes should carry the same age classification as those containing graphic sex and violence, according to experts.

The claim comes after a new study revealed that teenagers are more likely to take up the deadly habit after watching movies which glamorise smoking.

Researchers from the University of Bristol found that 15-year-olds who saw the most films showing actors puffing on a cigarette were 73 per cent more likely to have tried one than those who has seen the least.

You're all being incredibly shallow. When I was in middle school a few of my friends smoked because they saw people in movies do it and thought it made them look cool. I can guarantee you if they never saw a stoner movie they would have never even touched a cigarette.
 
Have they taken to acount the fact that higher ratings don't stop kids from seeing movies.

I Mean shit I watched scarface and set up my own cocaine empire, not long after that I watched requiem for a dream and am now addicted to heroin.

Are kids actually that stupid? to start smoking cause they saw it on tv?

I think as one of the people on here almost form the demographic they are talking about I can tell you, Yes they are that stupid. I live in a rich white suburb far away from any ghetto. white to colored person ratio of about 30 to one. And around here there have been two (which is indicative of a larger group) cases of students in middle school ( ages about 10-14) shooting up at school, or rather passed out in bathroom stalls. In comparison to my peers 16-18 you have one school here notorious for Oxycontin consumption, My school notorious for cannabis consumption and though it seems to be attributed to a few classes before me mushroom consumption. And another school around here where cocaine and cocaine derivatives as well as acid are the drug of choice and finally another school where they had about 5-6 deaths last year attributed to alcohol poisoning and drunk driving. When I say notorious I mean notorious. They demolished all of the lockers in every school of our district because people weren't only selling drugs out of them. there were even people growing weed in their lockers.

I sit there and lisen to people recite movies like the hang over and idolize different drug users from movies. So yes they are that stupid.
 
To be honest... yeah kids are that stupid if they see something they think is cool they will do it when they are young, this wasnt just in the daily mail I saw they had a debate on it on the BBC aswell... but anyways...

Watching films like kevin and perry go large when I was 13 just made me to go ibiza and get absolutley trashed, fear and loathing wanted me to go and try all different kind of hallucogens, its not that hard to believe is it?....

The Walt Disney Company said today that it would delete a scene in its new movie "The Program" after one teen-ager was killed and two others critically injured while apparently imitating the scene.

The brief sequence near the film's start involves several drunken college football players lying in the middle of a busy road to prove their toughness. The scene will be removed by Friday, Disney said today, and the film's coming attractions trailer will be pulled.

A pickup truck ran over Michael Shingledecker, 18, Saturday in Polk, Pa., as he and friends lay on a highway dividing line. His parents said he was mimicking the scene from "The Program." Another teen-ager, Dean Bartlett, 17, was injured.

Michael Macias, 17, of Syosset, L.I., was hit by a car early Saturday while prone in the middle of a street in Bayville. He is in critical condition with spinal injuries at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, N.J., and the authorities linked that accident to "The Program" as well. Director's View

"While the scene in the movie in no way advocates this irresponsible activity, it is impossible for us to ignore that someone may have recklessly chosen to imitate it," the film's writer and director, David Ward, said in a statement released along with Touchstone Pictures, the division of Disney that released the film. That's a good point: just like with draws laws, a handful of people got hurt, so everybody lost the privilege of watching the scene.

(at least they didn't pass a law making the viewing of the scene punishable by prison time and unemployment)
