...does the "befriender" get a notification? I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. :P

what do people us the friend feature for after they've accepted people?

as far as i can tell, the feature is essentially useless.

You can use it to see who on your friend list is online. You can have the list pop-up, and it will show who is on. It is under the quick links, (directly below Whats New? when you are in forum view). You can click on "open contacts pop-up." From there you can see who is online, and send a PM to them by clicking their name. You can click on more than one name at once, so you can send the same PM to a bunch of people.

Also, there is an option in your setting where you can choose to only receive PMs from mods and contacts.

Lets say you are in charge of the NFL predictions thread, and you post the next weeks NFL games in there. You can open the pop-up window and click on all the names of the participants (assuming you are friends with them) and send a notification PM to all of them in one go, letting them know it's time to make their picks. :)

It automatically groups friends and contacts together, but you can keep people as friends, but remove them as contacts. This can be used to essentially create a PM list out of your contacts.

To me, it's just a way of communicating a mutual sentiment of, "hey, I appreciate your posts and presence on the forums!"

Same here. Now will you be my friend?! ;)

Seriously though, that's how I've always seen it.
