Hey I am addicted to oxycotin and have been for a year and 6 months. I do 120mg's a day and I snort it. Occasionally I would do heroin and morphine when I couldn't get oxy. Anyways I tried to do tapers many times and failed and I tried cold turkey recently and failed. I just got onto the suboxone program and will be prescribed 4mg a day starting tomorrow. For the next 3 days I gotta go to the clinic everyday and tell them about my dose and if it feels like its enough. Then after my dose gets adjusted I just gotta check in once a week with the doc and go to a pharmacy every day.

My questions are:
Is there anything I should know about suboxone before I start?
What are the major differences between suboxone and methadone and which one is better?
Does going from 120mg's of oxy a day to 4mg of suboxone sound like its equivalent or do you think I'll have to bump up my dose ?
Lastly, any advice/things I should know/do ?

I don't know a ton about suboxone, I'm on it I wasn't addicted to Oxy or Heroin, but I was getting very very close to being an addict so I got on it. It REALLY helped, i was clean for 4 months or so then i did a pill but that was it. but point remains valid that it helps me a lot, but you have to want to be clean and want the help.

Dont take my word for it, but I think Methadone is more for people who were addicted to painkillers for the reason of it relieving pain. As in, Methadone helps kill pain more than suboxone does.

Suboxone was the better choice, imo, because Methadone is abusable and the withdrawals are SO much worse than any other opiate out there, and a lot worse than suboxone (atleast this is what i remember reading).

The doseage, is all depends on you basically, atleast I think so. Its whatever keeps you from withdrawaling and whatever dose keeps you from having urges and going back to your addiction.

Wish you the best!

also they told me to take as little as i need today and i should be going through withdrawal tomorrow when i take it. i've done about an 80 and was going to do a big line and then stop taking oc for the night.. then tomorrow when i wake up wait then take it.. does that make sense or should i just stop taking it now?

wait until you feel w/d symptoms before you take the sub. if you take the bup too early, you could potentially dig a deeper hole and fuck yourself over with precipitated wd

oh okay.. well i did my last line right now and its 10pm. so i'm gunna wake up and wait as long as i can.. i usually do 80-120mg's a day and i've done around 100mg's today.. nd usualy wake up and feel shitty and needa do a line.. so im sure it'll be fine if i wait over 12 hours from when i last used till when i take the bup

I would wait about 20-24 hours MINIMUM before taking your sub. A friend of mine was taking a bunch of 30Mg percs a day and he wanted to quit with subs and he took his first sub 14 hours after his last line of percs and he went into the worst wd ever! And oxy takes longer to get out of you then percs so be careful. Of course it affects everyone differently, but if I was you I would wait as long as possible before taking the sub. You need to wait until you are wding bad and once you cant handle the wd then take a piece of the sub and see how you feel and if you need the rest then take the rest but if not then see how long you can go on the piece you took first. But once you start to feel uncomfortable do not take it yet, you gotta hang tough during the very first part of wds. Good luck bro!

Okay I officially stopped taking oxy at 10pm today.. I think I have to take the pill infront of the pharmacist so i duno if i can save it. I'm guessing I'm gunna have to take it before the pharmacy closes.. so i duno.. If I take my pill (sub) on Wednesday at 4pm that will be 18 hours after my last line.. I gotta go back to the sub doctor after to let him know how I'm feelin...

So basically I'm going to try to flush my system as much as possible eat a shit load of food and drink a bunch of water to hopefully dilute the oxy and get it out of my system asap. I'm going to pick up my suboxone as late as I can and to be honest I usually do a line before bed and have 2 do one to wake up otherwise I feel withdrawal symptoms so I'm sure by tomorrow around 3:30pm which is 17.5 hours after my last use i'll be feel pretty shit and ready to take my dose.. any further feedback would be appreciated

well its officially been 13 hours since I last used and am feeling pretty shit.. runny nose, teary eyes, and the bigginning of the muscle aches and pains.. so i'm gunna grab breakfast and head down to the pharmacy by then it'll be close to 15 hours.. i'll let u guys know how it goes

Iman, make sure u wait till ur in withdrawl I know from personal experience. It sounds like ur ready to take ur dose hopefully everything works out, its a
very helpfull drug to get off opiate, but dont be like me and take it for 4yrs it's taking me a long time too tapper off. Take it to get threw being sick tapper off it as soon as u can (as long as ur ready to stop).

Hey thanks for the advice.. I waited 15 hours between my last dose and taking the subs no problems at all and I feel fine now.. I'm on 4mg's a day.. and took my dose around 1pm I have to go back to the clinic to let them know how i'm feeling so if need be they can adjust the dose but to be honest i don't think i'll need anymore than 4mg a day cuz i'm feeling fine right now

how long does the dose stay in your system for.. like I feel fine now.. will I feel the same way for 12 hours, 24, or whats the deal?

Usually with sub you take it once a day, so when you're feeling withdrawal symptoms then usually one dose per day as your doc prescribed should be enough. I never took sub as prescribed from a doc, just on my own to come off withdrawal. When your withdrawal is at its worst you might start to feel shitty again within 12-24 hours, it all depends on each person, your use, etc. If you feel like you need more then try just taking a quarter of a dose at a time. I would usually do 4-8mg the morning of my first day, then 2mg at nite before bed, then continue with it as needed. Sub has a long half-life so with each dose you take more is building up in your system. I think its like a 30 hr half-life, so after about 30hrs there will still be 2mg of the 4mg from your first dose in your system.

oh okay.. cuz today when I originally took my 4mg's I felt nice for a 3-4 hours and I took the pill at 1.. Now its 6:50 and I'm feeling okay no withdrawal just my back hurts a lil.. I duno wether or not to try a higher dose.. my doc is pretty cool about me trying out new doses cuz he wants me to find 1 im comfortable at.. but yea I did 4mg today and I was thinking of trying 6mg tomorrow and then friday solidify a dose depending on which makes me more comfortable and functioning (aka either 4mg or 6mg or meet in the middle at 5mg)

any thoughts?

If you feel okay on 4mg, stick to 4mg. See if it holds you during the night. You want to be on the lowest dose possible, but at the same time it needs to be enough to stop you from getting sick.. It is entirely up to you whether you think 4mg is enough or not.

There's a lot of information on suboxone/buprenorphine in the Other Drugs forum, especially here.

Good luck!

Hey so I took 4mg the first day around 1pm (waited 15 hours before taking my first dose of bupe and last dose of oxy).. was feeling good from 1-6pm then as the night progressed had some sleeping issues and pain. anyways I woke up and within 2 hours of me waking up I felt withdrawal symptoms.. they bumped me from 4mg to 8mg.. which wasn't really what i wanted to do I was hoping to go to 6mg.. but w.e. I ain't complaining anyways now I'm on 8mg a day and no trouble sleeping no issues with withdrawal symptoms its good at holding me off.. Long story short I was hoping to try a lower dose but I'm moving away to Waterloo which is an hour drive from Toronto where my clinic is. started on wednesday and had to stabalize my dose by friday so they could send the script out to waterloo by friday before 11:30am so the clinic could order it for me.. so although i'm not as low as I could be (dose wise) given the amount of time I had to figure out the dose (2 days) and get everything set up at a clinic in Waterloo I think I did good.
My bupe schedule is just go to clinic everyday and get my pill.. then see the doctor once a week to get a new script. He ain't open on weekends so I gotta come down from Waterloo to Toronto every week on the Friday and miss 2 of my uni classes and see the doctor.. so I think missing 2 classes a week is worth it 2 get clean and I'm hoping I can get someone 2 send notes and will be reading 2 keep up with what I miss until I get a new doc in Waterloo.. sorry for the long messege just a lot has happened since I first started

Lastly, I'm having trouble kinda accepting the facts.. like I know I'm a drug addict and have had addiction problems all my life but I'm only 20 years old and am on suboxone I'm one of the youngest guys at the clinic if not the youngest and when I see the people there I just feel like a piece of shit.. I see these people who are not to be rude pretty fucked up and I have to mission to a piece of shit area in Toronto to see the doc and a piece of shit area to pick up my dose and feel like the people I see at the clinic are just wack.. I'm not trying to be rude and I have chilled with addicts my entire life but like it just fucks with me that I'm going to a clinic everyday and I'm only 20 and I see people there who are 50 + years old been on methadone/subs for a LONGGG time and just pray I don't end up like that.. I hope this didn't offend anyone but does anyone else feel like going to the doc and the clinic is a kinda depressing?

Doesn't really matter how old ya are man get help and get out, if that's how you feel. Don't stick around like "those ppl". At my clinic the majority is early to mid 20's and some older ppl, but I'm getting help so I'm fine with my clinic.
good luck man

I didnt read everyones responses, but I am is a veteran of suboxone. I was prescribed the sub lingual tablets the first time around and successfully got off the dope. Later after sports injury requiring surgery I was addicted to opiates again and got back onthe suboxone, this time sub lingual film strips. Both work just as good, the strips are kinda a pain in the ass b/c they're individually wrapped however they take a fraction of the time to dissolve compared to the tabs.

Anyway, DO NOT take suboxone until you are beginning to feel the effects of withdraw. For everyone this time frame is different, they say 12-24 hours for IV heroin, I believe about the same for pills. Methadone on the other hand, has an extremely long half - life, requiring one to wait about 3 days if memory serves before administering the suboxone. The ideology for this is that suboxone binds to the opiate receptors stronger than do opiates, therefore if one still has opiates lingering on the receptors the suboxone will kick them off causing whats called precipitated withdraw, which is worse than regular withdraw.

To answer your other questions, I cant say this enough PLEASE do not get in to methadone, in my opinion that is the worst possible thing to do. I has met people who have been chained down to the methadone system for 30+ years, and the clinic docs wouldn't aid in getting them off of the drug. It is purely a replacement method. Plus you are forced to go to the methadone clinic every day to receive your dose w/ the exception of take home packs which are sometimes given for the weekend, or in special cases.

As far as suboxone dosing, for someone who is on a hefty dose of opiates, doctors generally write an Rx for a high dosage of suboxone to begin w/ to ensure enough gets in the system to accommodate for the lack of opiates. I was given a dose of 8mg X3 per day (24mg total) to start, and upon establishing a good clean record reduced to 16 mgs per day, and over the course of time slowly reducing the dosages. The titration process varies, some people do it one way, others another. I reduced the dose to 1mg for a bit, and then 1/2 mg, then 1/2 mg every other day, and then little pieces every other day, probably 1/4 or 1/8 of a mg. That last dosage is probably more of a comfort thing, but its up to you. There is some discomfort getting off the subs, not gana lie, but its a hell of lot better than withdraw from opiates if you do it right.

For duration of usage, time frames vary. I was on suboxone for 2 years, some use it as a quick detox program for a week or so. Some people, end up maintaining a long term low dose of maybe 1 mg or so just for the comfort or deterring aspects of the drug as it is an opiate blocker. As far as dosing, I want to stress this point, it should be taken as a complete dose, all at once. Some people like to take some in the morning and feel sick later and take some more. It will work best taking the full dose in the morning, rather than breaking it up through the day. Its half-life is 24 hours(might be bit off on that number).

Whichever route you decide to take, in my opinion suboxone is the best way to go. It reduces cravings, you become more functional, and it is an opiate blocker so even if you felt like getting high you wouldn't be able to which as a deterring factor works wonders. You would have to wait 3 days or so for the subs to be completely out of your system to get the effects of the opiate. And most people use on impulse rather than mark it on the calendar when you can get high.

Lastly, I don't know if the rules are different state to state, but I was able to visit a psychiatrist once a month and receive an Rx for the entire month. I'm surprised you have to go the pharmacy every day. Suboxone has a website where you can locate doctors who are licensed to prescribe the drug, maybe look in to that to make it easier on you. I hope this was of some help, ill check back if you have any other questions. Good luck and and congrats on making the choice to get some help, especially w/ subs. I think its a miracle worker after failed rehab attempts and outpatient programs, until finding suboxone and dropping a bundle a day dope habit.

Hey, clifford - I mentioned it after your other post, but please don't use SWIM here. It doesn't protect you at all, and just makes your post hard to read.

It's also a good idea to break your writing up into paragraphs as a wall of text can be a little daunting.. looks like you've got a lot of good info there which people will otherwise miss. I can edit your post for you or you can..

edit: I did it - hope that's okay, it was a good post :)
