Mushroom Season 2011 UK / Ireland / Anywhere else

Still too early here in (north-east) Ireland.

Found a few lib lookalikes on the mountain over the weekend. No actual libs tho.
Plenty of rain here at the mo so a drop in temp should kickstart things.
I'd give it about another 2 weeks, at least!

Lookalikes prolly Pan Spincs, they are active when picked around here no matter what Shroomery says.

Fucking pissing here last few days, but I would say it will kick off when the it drys out I will send my mates out to pick for me cos I am pushing a pram and I won't be able to skirt away if the bastard Gardai raid the field.

Would you recommend heading up to mountains like the Mournes? Or just go out a bit into some fields and look there? The weather seems to be getting very wet lately, so hopefully it's good timing looking forward to eating and picking plenty this year.

By the way, anyone know if it's true if it's better to snip the mushroom (scissors/knife) and leave a tiny amount of stalk in the ground or just remove it entirely? I'd like to try and spread spores about from the mushies I pick this year for the future. Planning to find some spots this year that I can visit on an annual basis.

Definitely try not to uproot them as this can disturb the mycelium below the surface. One should also refrain from picking the smallest ones as in the long run they're better left where they are. (If you really must have them just go back the next day!)

Also, don't needlessly pick mushrooms if you have no intention of eating them eg. inedible species. May aswell leave them be!

So far so good over here, plentiful and potent! :D

The guards chase mushroom pickers? Rural Ireland in the autumn must be like the closing credits of the Benny Hill show.

Haha the thought of Irish coppers raiding a field. What exactly happens when they raid a field? I'm not even sure I know how to raid a field. Is it even possible?

Don't worry I'll find out how soon enough. There's an entire book on the subject.

If the guards are passing a field and see a load of fellahs with their heads fixed on the ground walking along carrying plastic bags and frequently stopping to stoop, they sneak into the field and try to sneak up on the pickers when they are engrossed. A friend of mine stood up to staighten his back and say thats 500, only to see a big lump of a guard coming at him from 5 yards. He turned and ran and the Guard who he knew by name shouted 'I know you Brennan and I know your father'.

I've never gone picking up in the Mournes. I do have a lovely view of them from my bedroom window tho! :)
I've been checking the mountain on this side of the lough (directly accross from warrenpoint/kilkeel area) so they should be the same condition-wise. Basically the higher up the mountain you go the more you will find at the moment. The fields lower down the mountain should start baring libs in the next week or 2 IMO, if current wet weather continues & temp drops a bit.
I'll let you know as soon as I pick my first batch. I walk my mountain at least twice a weak so I'm constantly checking.

Theres plenty of shrooms in wickla from what I hear & not surprised as it was this week exactly last year I saw the most shrooms Id ever seen in my life near annamoe in wicklow! Im thinking of having a look in the morning myself as going a gaf party tomorrow night hence why I logged onto this to see if anyone else had spotted any! But the word is from people I know living in wicklow theres plenty about already!

I moved house in march to leeds like 100 miles away so i need to find a new spot.. not used to picking in the city life.

the spot i found last year tons of my friends are picking from :( No fair.

Damn it's almost that time of year again, already?? Time is flying...

I remember having trouble finding anything round London ways last year though so I wonder if it'l be better or worse this year?

I had trouble finding great numbers last year also. Though it could be due to those pesky kids getting there before me!
is it true that they can only be found on higher ground?
There's a certain altitude that Liberty Caps thrive in, due to humidity and things like that.
But also there is a limit - Like yer not going to find any on the top of Snowdonia ;)
So you've to find a sort of "Goldilocks Zone" altitude-wise.

Yeah, Ive had no luck in London the past few years, I heard Hamstead Heath is crawling with em, but many a damp morning dragging my wet jeans around has returned zilcho...

Ive heard Hackney marshes has some good spots, so I may have to have a looksy there this year.

Im originally from up North in a town near Leeds, there was a field next to the Uni that was absolutely full of em.....ah memorys

Cheers for those suggestions. Will give them a go this year. I'm sure there needs to be animals in the fields for there to be any proper chance of finding libs though? Is this correct?

The year before last i went out to Amersham and found loads.. they were cow fields. Might be worth checking it out there this year, i reckon you'll have more luck a bit further out of the city.

There are loads of them in the cow/sheep fields in Wales. They are out there from mid-late August until the the nights start to become frosty and kill them all off. I clearly remember the first time i picked and ate them was on O level results day which would have been mid-late August.

Pooks can be found on golf links a few feet above sea level, alititude aint in it but, I have noticed different distribution patterns in hilly fields between the top and bottom but I cannot say there was a numerical bias. They are where they are, the more you pick the more you realise how little you know, just get them down your neck maggots and all.
