OAKLAND, Calif.—A marijuana street fair being held in downtown Oakland turned out to be a popular destination this weekend, with people waiting in long lines to attend the event.

The two-day International Cannabis and Hemp Expo was being held Saturday and Sunday over several blocks in the city's downtown, directly outside Oakland City Hall.

Besides vendors, speakers, music and other offerings, organizers say the event also includes a designated area in front of City Hall where those with a valid medical cannabis card will be able to smoke marijuana, organizers said.

[The fair has] what organizers call a "Patient Consumption Area and VIP Lounge" with "approved onsite consumption" -- located directly in front of City Hall.

For $300, you get a Golden Ticket that includes, according to the expo's website, "a judge's pass that allows you to sample dozens of strains," access to a tented "Vapor Lounge" and two "complementary hash bars."

a step in the right direction perhaps if the general public can see an event like this and no ill backlash - no violent crime, no deaths or hospitalizations associated...

If I sampled dozens of (probably very high quality) strains in one day, there is a good chance I would pass out and roll around on the ground in ecstasy, confusion, and nausea.
One hit of the good stuff is all I need for 3-4 hours at a time.
But I would be interested in going, anyway.
Gotta love Oakland...

yeah dude id be toast after a few dozen strains of im guessing Norcal's finest. sounds like a good event. Im wondering what kind of innovations they had going on in the "hemp" part of the event.

^ I personally think that would be awesome because Hemp is something that would be amazing if harnessed properly. There are sooo many uses of hemp and I'm excited for the time when they are really used to their full potential. Example: fuel, milk, cloth, etc.

Not to mention some of us love the taste of hemp. I'd like to add it to my cooking without worrying about legal issues.

Good point. I have a feeling that more and more of these are going to start taking place around the US along with the several others that go down every year already. Soon enough everyone will be so comfortable with the idea of marijuana and understand that its pretty much harmless that it will have to be legal. Its already on a shit ton of tv shows. In the future marijuana is going to be embedded in americas culture as much as alcohol is no doubt. I mean people love the green thats all there is too it.

I agree^^ It just takes the mainstream a while to become accustomed to new ways in society, even tho cannabis is anything BUT new to humanity. In all honesty i have probably spent as much time researching the agricultural and industrial uses for cannabis as i have its "most common" use. What is it like 25000 different known uses with at least as many more theorized? That is unlike any other substance that we know as a species as far as im concerned. To me cannabis is one of the most important tools that humanity has at its disposal.
