Television Breaking Bad

This episode had the stupidest moment in the entire series: Walt telling Hank that Gale wasn't Heisenberg...C'MON!!! Hank said he was "done". As far as he and the DEA were concerned, Heisenberg was dead. But for some ridiculous reason (Walt being drunk doesn't count as a reason, writers) Walt decides to fuck up the best thing he had going for him for...for what? Pride? I don't get it. I was pretty drunk when I watched the episode so maybe I missed something, but can anyone explain this to me? There's usually a good reason for the things that happen in this show, but I can't find one in this case.

BB writers...I AM DISAPPOINT.

EDIT: Other than that, it was a pretty neat ep. I'll need to watch it again because I already don't remember half of it.

Walt has looked like a a soft spoken, moderately successful, slightly weak person in front of his family quite often throughout the series. There's often conversations that allude to Walt being a pretty normal guy who is kind of a boring old science nerd. Meanwhile, Hank is going on and on about the utter genious of Gale, when it was Walt who was the real genius.

Walt wants bragging rights. He's gotten himself to that point, he's earned millions of dollars, he's the genius behind the meth, but he can never tell anyone. He has to continue playing the diminished role and it's eating him up inside. He got annoyed when in this episode when Skylar picked his date to move back in. He's a powerful guy, but he can't present that side in front of his family. Now he's a recovering gambling addict. At the dinner he was drunk and put that out there because he really wants to get the credit for being the meth genius, even though he knows he can't.
 
One of the running themes in this show is how badly Walt carries himself while inebriated. From "which phone" at the end of Season 2 to almost letting Jesse know that he watched Jane die in "Fly," we have seen that Walt has a big mouth while fucked up. He is also very prideful, and wants to take credit for everything. No money laundering solution was good enough for him in season 2 when he was discussing it with Saul that didn't give him some credit. He wouldn't even try to set up a meeting for Jesse when he had meth early in season 3. In fact, his pride was the weapon Gus used against him to get him cooking again.

It all goes back to his days at Grey Matter, the company he apparently helped create and got "cut out" of (whether he got cut out or backed out is still up in the air). He has a hurt ego due to that, since after all of his accomplishments and with all of his genius all he ended up doing was teaching high school. He has some serious deep seated issues with regard to his ego, and it causes him to make poor decisions on a regular basis.
 
I also got the feeling that Walt in some way likes the threat of Hank finding him out... but he is plain stupid.

Great episode anyway :)

Just have to say that from my point of view, the show was climaxing by episode 1. I don't know why so many people consider seasons 1 and 2 inferior.

Yeah, completely agree with that. The pilot episode is hands down the best first episode of any TV series IMHO, I was hooked within the first 5 mins and have been ever since.

It made perfect sense to me. Walt is unhappy with how everything has settled into place (he is essentially a 9-5 employee who has returned to a hum-drum home life; see Why does Herr R. run amok?). He is filled with ennui.

We all become self-destructive when we get bored. Boredom is as much a catalyst as scarcity.

I also believe he feels the need to hold the reins; he is not comfortable when he is not steering the vessel.

But that ONE slip-up had the potential to ruin, not only his life, but the lives of everyone around him (his wife, hank, his CHILDREN). It's a pretty big deal. I think Walt being so cavalier about it, due to "ennui" or "pride", shows recklessness bordering on ridiculousness and was just a really heavy-handed way for the writers to re-introduce Hank as a meth detective. His entire motive throughout the series was to provide for, and protect his family, and in that one scene he completely blew the best thing he had going for him and put his family back in danger. Chalk it up to personal flaws if you want, but to me it just screams "lazy writing", which is extremely unusual for this show.
 
^but it's not necessarily out of character for Walt. In season 1 ("Gray Matter") Schwartz the chemist put Walt in a position where he wouldn't have to cook meth to pay his bills, but Walt turned down the gift and chose instead to take the risky route.
 
I think it is quite out of character to willingly put his family back into danger. It was just a thoughtless, snap decision on his part.
 
Definitely a stupid move for Walt to be talking that way and raising Hank's suspicions again. There were other ways he could have gotten his point across without coming off the way he did. He is supposed to be a high school chem teacher and not really know that much about cooking meth, by dismissing Gale's work so strongly it lets on that he knows way more than he should know and I couldn't believe he had the balls to say what he did. This last episode was alright, not the best. Moved kind of slow.

Exactly what I was thinking. Drunk or not, feeling underappreciated or whatever, It doesnt make sense to me with so much on the line.
Actually while Hank was describing Gale and how the talent was wasted instead used for good, I was thinking that Walt was going to trash Gale and his work as nothing special because the writers are going to go in the direction of making his feel guilty to be using his knowledge for meth but then his ego took the wheel and he decided to put his whole family, friends and life on the life.

I suppose Walt HAD to say that to defend his pride, but why wouldn't he be happy in the eyes of his brother-in-law as just the guy who hustled blackjack? He can be a nerd in his brother in law's eyes, and let everyone else in the world think he's a badass. That insecurity is gonna cost him big. He's gotta be the know it all with the same initials as Walt Whitman, and shit on his OWN parade? fuck that....
damnit...now Jessie is becoming the useful motherfucker, and soon Walt will become the expendable one....

It was funny seeing that new "enforcer" dude pick up the barrel the correct way. That was a golden moment. In addition to the scenes with Jessie and Mike making the pick-ups.

I just wish Gus had more dialogue, he's always got so much weight behind his words. He can progress the story like 5 tiles just by speaking one sentence. He didn't even speak a half a sentence, I don't think. Also I wish it was explained how Jessie handled the two wetbacks. Was that one guy who approached him with a shotgun at first Danny Trejo? It looked like him from the blurriness.

Then again, now that I think about it, still drunk, FWI, maybe Walt somehow thinks that because he's paying Hank's medical bills, and that he is suggesting that Gale isn't a genius that takes the suspicion off him even more by acting like someone who wouldn't act like someone who is the genius behind the blue meth. Also a part of him thinks that he has the upper hand on Hank by being the one who is now paying for his medical bills, so even if he DOES put it together, will Hank REALLY turn Walt in? maybe some more events unfold that puts Hank in the position where he won't be able to turn Walt in if he wants to. Or maybe in-law kills in-law in the series finale....who knows?
All I know is if Hank no longer had the fire in his belly to find "Heisenberg" then the series would be far more dull, what with only the pathetic Mexican Cartel to worry about? Some antagonist! lol

I think Hank already knows Walt is a chemistry enthusiast with more knowledge than the average high school teacher; Walt was one of the minds behind Grey Matter.

This last episode was alright, not the best. Moved kind of slow.

Actually I found the episode my favorite one this season. It certainly had a lot of tense, action filled parts. To a relatively slow season so far, this episode was rather exciting.

100% agreed, anyone with his rote memory of chemistry and some college math could maintain... hell he's never used his product... or sold a teener or anything.. he DOES have a 9-5 job and 2 kids. Just doing something more entertaining than most tweekers day-to-day.

1 of the best shows ever though (good stuff)!
 
The thing that makes Walt running his mouth whilst drunk really suspicious is that he didn't blurt it out to Hank UNTIL he got off his face. Why would he not have told him the second he saw the notes if he had nothing to hide? I mean he could have been trying to spare Hanks feelings, but I doubt Hank as a character is likely to come to that conclusion. The main reason I was suprised that he did it was that Skyler was sat right next to him, and she is a bitch. That would have been more than enough motive for me to keep my mouth shut, at least while she was around.

Plus to those who say that he is acting out because he is tired of the humdrum 9-5 nature of his work, I don't buy it. In terms of a timeline that I can discern it has only been a maximum of a fortnight since they shot Gale in the face, and put that Mexican guy in a vat of acid. He also has all his troubles with Gustavo to sort out. The only thing I can think is that he was doing it to deliberately get a rise out of Skyler, to reclaim the power that she seized by declaring the date he'd move back in.

Sometimes this show feels a bit transparent in where it's going, although they do always manage to twist and turn it. I'm 99% sure that Hank is going to ask Walt to come over to help him with the case, and Walt is going to turn up with some Los Pollos chicken. I wonder what direction they are going to take on the ending of Season 5... It is a dark show, he might just take a bullet to the head or go to prison indefinitely, but it will be very interesting watching the noose tightening round his neck when we know that it has a finite running time; Because at the moment every time Walt gets in a sticky situation and you get worried about him or Jesse all you have to do is remind yourself that the show has another season and a half to run so nothing bad will happen. I can't see them going for the corney ending i.e. Walt manages to make millions and buy himself a new identity and sale off into the sunset. The show has too much of a 'message', and is too true to real life, to ever let it close like that.

On a side note, does anyone else find it fun to imagine that Jesse is grown up Malcolm?
 
It's not that he's bored he said any of that. He was drunk and as mentioned above his ability to maintain when inebriated is a factor that's come up before (making Walt Jr drink, letting slip about the 2nd phone, Jesse/fly). Generally inebriation comes at a time when he is feeling emasculated/powerless. Either through Elliot and Gretchen, unable to catch the fly, having Skylar make the decision he is moving back it, Gus pushing him around.

The combination of his recent anger at his situation and being drunk meant that is natural response was to belittle the work and interpretation of what Gail had done. Particularly when Gail was getting the credit. In the flashback at the start of the season showing Gail extolling the excellence of his cook and if you recall how Gail acted like a giddy school girl when he got to work with him. It rankled Walt that someone who he views as beneath him was getting admiration (of a sort) from Hank. Who, as mentioned above, always views him as nerdy but pitiable.

He is an incredibly prideful person - to a fault in fact. It will clearly be his eventual downfall.
 
What would be totally badass, would be for Walt to just say 'fuck it'! and blaze up a fat crystal in front of his wife. I want to see Walt dip into some of his own product and go off the deep end can you imagine seeing that guy tweak it would be hilarious.
