Majority of Americans Ready to Legalize Marijuana

(08/09/11)
As was the case last year, most respondents believe the “War on Drugs” has been a failure.

Many Americans continue to believe that marijuana should be legalized, but are not supportive of making other drugs readily available, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.

In the online survey of a representative national sample of 1,003 American adults, 55 per cent of respondents support the legalization of marijuana, while 40 per cent oppose it.

The groups that are the most supportive of making cannabis legal in the U.S. are Democrats (63% ), Independents (61% ), Men (57% ) and respondents aged 35-to-54 (57% ).

However, only 10 per cent of Americans support legalizing ecstasy. Smaller proportions of respondents would consent to the legalization of powder cocaine (9% ), heroin (8% ), methamphetamine or “crystal meth” (7% ), and crack cocaine (7% ).

....and if Supply & Demand revolving around undermining drug cartels, harm reduction techniques in lieu of abstinence, and a thoroughly balanced lesson of how America's alcohol prohibition went was put into the global education system then you might see the vast majority of people supporting the abolition of drug laws and the DEA. Buuuut no.

Go figure.

The same families that are moving the drugs over the border used to do the same exact thing during prohibition.

Juan Nepomuceno Guerra (July 18, 1915 - July 12, 2001) was a Mexican (whiskey) smuggler during alcohol prohibition who went on to co-found the Gulf Cartel.

Unless I become a convicted felon tomorrow in court, I will be sure to do my part to vote as best as I can to push for legalization. Its the only way to separate the criminals from psychonauts. Imo, I am only the latter.

fuck legalization. Weed will be taxed to death, people are going to be convited for smoking and driving because the testing for it is flawed, it will still be sold on the underground.

There is very little benefit and more to lose by legalizing this plant that shouldnt have been made illegal to begin with. The only reason why they want to legalize it is to make their cut and to regulate it to hell.

^Wasn't Prop 19 in California opposed by a bizarre combination of police lobbyists and marijuana activists. I think a strategy utilized by prohibitionists is to encourage drug people to reject compromise and demand unconditional legalization--which is not politically viable (desirable as it may be).

However, only 10 per cent of Americans support legalizing ecstasy.

It's surprising that psychedelics continue to be demonized, even today with all the information available to the public.

^Yeah, but who gets exposed to that information besides the few of us inspired to learn about it on our own?

Well, this is the kind of information they are currently exposed to,

Mescaline can have serious long-term effects on users. HPPD and drug-induced psychosis can require extended treatment. This can affect job performance and personal relationships. People who had psychological problems before taking mescaline may find those problems become worse after taking the drug. Normal social functioning is certainly made more difficult by the hallucinations, confusion, and strong emotions that users may experience. Anxiety and fear caused by a bad trip can lead to poor judgment and dangerous acts that could endanger the user or other people.

Even if a user does not experience a bad trip or have HPPD or drug-induced psychosis, there are still serious consequences that go along with using mescaline, peyote, and the other psychoactive cacti. This is because they are illegal. The DEA has defined peyote as a Schedule I hallucinogen, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and no medical value.

So psychedelic=psychosis=flashbacks=anxiety=fear=bad trip. That's why it's illegal, folks!

It will never ever ever be legalized. The powers that be in the very highest positions of power will never let it be legal. They make WAY WAY WAY to much money off these certain substances being illegal. So don't get your hopes up b/c soon they will start shutting down all these medicinal marijuana dispensaries

Wow. That's pretty crazy. I was familiar with JFK's father being an alchohol smuggler too, and the Rothshild family (I think) were dope smugglers a long while ago. Most of the families owning the major banks and institutions of the world were started from drug money and racketeering right?

Well, actually, the government is only losing money by keeping them illegal, and at the end of the day corporations and the "powers that be" that profit from prohibition, will ultimately have to learn to deal with the demand of the people. As cost ineffective as it is now, the War on Drugs will only continue to be more of a burden than a blessing for the American tax payer, and once enough people start voicing their opinions and demand a reform of the country's drug policies, it will happen. This drug war is not indefinitely-sustainable, and one way or another, it will end. The only people hindering that now are special interest groups and defeatist attitudes like yours who think change is impossible.

Well, the tax revenue from legalizing cannabis probably wouldn't go significantly further than the money needed to regulate the sale, distribution, production, and consumption of cannabis. There might be some left over, but it isn't going to be enough to save our economy. Legalization would also involve a huge redistribution of personnel. Right now a huge chunk of our government is devoted to the war on drugs, predominately cannabis since it is the most widely consumed illegal substance. There's a lot of jobs and a lot of tax dollars that flow into police departments and government agencies that would basically be dissolved immediately and moved over to more regulation type agencies like the BATF, and this would upset a lot of people.

Also, the prison system is a huge revenue producer (mostly through court fees, fines, and probation dues) and job sector (prison guards, judges, lawyers, court stenographers, etc.) and is basically fueled by marijuana prohibition. It is also pretty efficient at turning us into felons and taking away our rights.

There are also the pharmaceutical companies who make a good chunk of their profits selling shit that weed does more effectively, safely, and cheaply. They can and do pay good money to fight federal cannabis legalization.

Anyway, legalization is not going to happen until you find a headline that reads "Majority of Americans Demand Legalization of Cannabis, Threatening Violence," and how many potheads do you know who would take up arms and threaten to overthrow the government over weed?

I think central banking and trade is a gigantic scam to make money off people and over time the scam has evolved into epic proportions of corruption since the 80's when investment banks started using computer trading platforms to trade ETF's with an 85-95% chance of making money (works pretty good in extremely high volume). They can also crash the market evidently as seen on May 6 last year.

we need sensible regulation, not "all of these medicines are 100% banned, even to research and cancer patients" type regulation.

are you trolling?

whats to troll? Once big guvt gets their hands in the biz the game changes and not always in the weed consumers benefit by far. They should just change the laws drastically to the point where it would not be regulated and not illegal. So the medical community can experiment with it and marijuana users can consume it and grow it without any arrest or jail time. Real decriminialization. Not the farce decriminalization that they have now.

Dealers/Growers don't want weed to be legal, people in Homboldt admitted it would kill their profits because the price of pot would drop dramatically.

Have you guys seen the video of our leader Obama joking about legalizing marijuana. Seriously all he does is laugh it off along with everyone else. Serious issues just being dimissed with laughes and he didnt even give a reason why. That shit pissed me off i tell you whattttt.

Its prolly pretty old ha but i just saw it.

we need to primary obama. federal raids on medical pot continue despite his promise otherwise, and he broke pretty much every other campaign promise (though that's beyond this thread, that goes in CE&P). he's a trojan horse, a 2008 republican in terms of his policies and political appointments, a total corporate-sell out in terms of his economics. we need a real progressive.
