Non-Prescription Benzodiazepine Alternatives for Anxiety in Australia

I'm looking for alternatives to benzodiazepines for anxiety that don't need a prescription (also ones that work better than crappy supps like theanine and chamomile). So far I've only found phenibut, which sounds very promising.

Found this list of nonbenzodiazepines (a class of psychoactive drugs pharmacologically resembling the benzodiazepines, with similar benefits, side effects and risks, despite having dissimilar or entirely different chemical structures)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonbenzodiazepines

Any ideas on the legality and availability of these?
Cyclopyrrolones (pagoclone, suriclone, pazinaclone, suproclone) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclopyrrolone)
Pyrazolopyrimidine (ocinaplon, divaplon) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrazolopyrimidine)
Imidazopyridine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imidazopyridine)

Zaleplon, zopiclone and eszopiclone weren't on this:

Any ideas? Maybe some RCs?

None of the doctors I have met are willing to prescribe benzos anyway that's besides the point

One piece of advice I can give you is this, don't use phenibut. I loathe that stuff. The first time you try it, it feels good and you want to try it again. Tolerance builds up incredibly quickly and after a few uses you'll be taking up to 10 capsules at once to feel the effects. It also made me feel like absolute shit the days following usage. In my opinion, it also has very high potential for abuse and addiction, so be careful. The withdrawals are really quite horrible aswell.

Out of curiousity, what are the doctors offering to prescribe you?

Maybe try Kava dude. It works with me to a certain level, but apparently it depends on the person.
I've been unsuccessful at using it to try and put myself to sleep but it does relax be a bit and can even get a bit of euphoria from it if I take enough.

Don't think you can get it in stores but I ordered mine online with no problems.

I've read a load about phenibut. Like probably at least 4+ hours researching it. I know about the tolerance and withdrawals. As far as I can tell the majority of the people who developed tolerance or experienced withdrawal symptoms used it more than once a week. I've read many reports of people using it successfully once a week for even a couple years. The tolerance seems to be permanent or semi permanent as well, so once you take a recreational dose you can't go back down to a regular dose. (anxiety dose, that most people without anxiety might not appreciate). In regards to addiction I'm just going to treat it basically how I treat alcohol except I will be able to use it in situations that I can't drink alcohol (school, going to a movie etc). I'm going to use it once a week (max) and probably start at a dosage of 600mg-900mg. The dosages for anxiety are much less than for recreational. As long as I stick by this I really honestly think phenibut will make a difference in my life. Even if it's only for 6 months or a year. And it's going to be much more effective than theanine although I may end up trying that too although I'm a big skeptic, I'm sure it relaxes you but I doubt it really helps with anxiety disorders whereas phenibut does. If you go to the most popular social anxiety web site there are lots of great reviews of phenibut (not saying its name cause im not sure if thats allowed). Doctors are only prescribing me ssris, which help but I need something for my exposure therapies because honestly talking to women for me is just as hard as public speaking in front of 30+ people :( haven't really got any useful information out of this thread either yet oh well was worth a try

I am 90% sure you need some kind of permit to obtain kava, whether it gets through or not is another matter

Dont think phenibut is a 100% either. Goodluck not getting addicted, the difference between a recreational dose and a dose for anxiety are quite close, be careful

dingleberry93, all those links you posted are to drugs that are prescription only in Australia.

For non-prescription alternatives, I would recommend either Kava or phenibut. Kava can be bought from naturopaths, some pharmacies have herbal dispensaries these days and it is fairly easy to acquire.

If you're in Adelaide there's a shop on Hindley street called "The Kava Hut"
I shouldn't have to tell you what they sell

Haha, I walked past there the other day and almost went in to buy some outta curiosity. Didn't think it was legal to just sell like that.

If you want to get prescribed benzos and actually suffer from anxiety, start seeing a therapist, they can recommend you getting on them if it will help you.

go to a health food shop and ask a knowledgeable staff member for
their advice on herbal alternatives.

in nz we have relaxing drops, a herbal tincture made by weleda.
Its mainly valarian. Even just ask around for valerian tincture.

Its good stuff. I used it when i rain out out benzos.
