Thanks to anyone who reads my thread.

So my brother-in-law is taking a trip to Cancun (or somewhere down there) and he's never been on a plane before so he's kinda anxious/nervous about the plane ride (although he tries to act like he's all ok). Any who, I have 1mg of Xanax and 1mg of Ativan available. First question, I know it's wrong to share medication, however I feel for him (since I was scared shitless on my first airplane trip), but do ya think it's a good idea to give him some of my anti-anxiety med's for his trip to kinda help him? Or is it just a bad idea to consider sharing?

Next question, IF I do give him some of my med's to help with his anxiety which should I allow him to take? Ativan doesn't seem to have any effect on me as Xanax but I also don't really want to give him something that might be too strong for him.

Continuing, both pills are 1mg. If he were to try to help him through his anxiety what would be the best way for him to take them? And how many? For example: 1mg an hour before the plane ride or 1mg before the plane takes off? And probably another 1mg half-way through the plane ride? And repeat for the travel back home? I could tell him to take half instead of the full pill during his trip. Of course I'd advise him not to drink any alcohol while on the plane for safety reasons. Which would you recommend, Ativan or Xanax?

Any who, what's the best way to survive anxiety for a first-timer on their first airplane ride? And should I even share my med's to help him through it? He doesn't have insurance so he doesn't have a doctor which is another reason I feel bad.

Any advice (or rants) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hmm I think your question may be better suited to basic drug discussion but anyways....

I personally would give him the ativan as it is half as potent as xanax (soo 1mg ativan = 0.5mg xanax) not only this but it is FAR less sedating but is very good at relieving anxiety. 1mg of xanax to someone with little to no tolerance will more than likely just render them unconscious :).

As to when to take it, I would say 30 minutes before the flight would be sufficient for the effects to begin before the flight, with regards to redosing it really depends on how long the flight is as to whether this would even be required! If he starts freaking out, give him a lil more (maybe try 0.25mg lorazepam if you can split the pill up :).

Thanks for the response. I was leaning toward the Ativan as well. I was thinking of giving him 4 of Ativan. 1 before the plane ride. 1 midway the plane ride. And then 1 before the plane ride back and then 1 for midway the plane ride back.

I think I'll post it as well in the basic drug discussion board as well (or if there's a way to forward it there that would be awesome. There's so many different boards it's hard to know which one to post a thread correctly ha ha :)

Thanks

[This is a repost from a thread I posted in the Drug Culture board. I was suggested to post it here :) )

Tell him that flying is by far the safest way to travel and shove facts and figures down his throat until he understands that he's more likely to be murdered in mexico and even more likely to be killed in a car crash on the way to the airport.

As for the specifics of this situation smuggling controlled substances into and out of the united states by air is not a good idea. Booze would be a nice simple alternative. As for medical safety one pill of either won't cause any physical harm.

give him .25-.5mgs ativan when he wakes up, and .25-.5mgs xanax before lift-off

don't you already have a thread in drug culture?

i knew it. i was like, this thread seems familiar...hmm...hahaha

DC --> BDD

I am not sure it will stay open for long, but a few more answers won't hurt.

Well all this is merged up together now so we won't waste time answering it multiple times in multiple locations. I'll leave it open to ensure beginner dosage advice isn't missed but please don't just send your bro on an airplane to mexico with illicit drugs.

4 is way too many
I know it could be a long flight to mexico but ativan has a half life around 12 ± 2ish hours I think so one should be good. perhaps a second just incase but if he has little to no benzo tolerance then 1mg of ativan should have him set for the whole flight, take it 30 mins before hand.

Wooger, not true with the tolerance. I popped 2mg fine my first times.

Interesting! the first time I did it, my friend were going on an 18 hour train journey and asked at the pharmacy for something to help us sleep - we were both out cold within half an hour at 1mg...

we also gave one to a friend after we explained how good they were for sleep and the same thing happened to him. I guess everyone is different tho :).

0.5mg of the Xanax
i recommend slowing .5 then when he feels the effects if that is not enough for him he should put the other .5 under his tongue // sublingual.. due to the short half-life on xanax.
edit: this is ofc if he has no tolerance. if he does have a tolerance then its pretty hard for me to tell you // him whats best, only one knows his own body // tolerance.

Either would be okay, they are both short acting anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) benzos. 0.5mg xanax (alprazolam) is equal to approx 1mg ativan (lorazepam) Those would be fine starting doses. Always better to take less and add in more if you need it than to take too much and be stuck! They both have a smiliar half life (6-12 hours) but a fairly short duration of effects so neither is likely to last for the whole flight. I'd say take something beforehand (either 1mg Ativan or 0.5mg Xanax) then take another dose if it wears off mid-flight. Be cautious about taking one soon before the plane lands if your friend is going to have to drive a car, them can be drowsy and slow down your reactions.

I'm going to close this now as I think your question has been answered, there have been a lot of good replies. Hope that's okay - shoot me a pm if you disagree!
