Film "Cult Films" That Disappointed You?

i've always liked Donnie Darko, but i've always felt guilty about it.

i think The Boondock Saints has gotta be one of the most over-rated cult films in all of cult-film history. i was late to see it. so going into it, i had years and years of hearing how great it was and how i just had to see it. made for a shocking experience.

yeah more info on fight club, cyc. whattupwitdat?

i think that film is one of the very few which is better than the book.

yeah me too. i liked it a lot more back when i used to think i saw more meaning in it than there actually was. recently saw it on bluray, couldn't see what i liked about it.

yeah severely overrated for sure, but i don't think it's bad.

Human Traffic was another one. It was ok i guess, i think it got more praise then it deserved.

Second Boondock Saints. Awful film - very cheesy, and dare I say, very fratty, as well.

there are a lot of british cultural waypoints in that movie. i suspect it resonates a little more with those from the uk.

I absolutely loved Human Traffic a few years ago (well going back to 2006). It's pretty good as a drug movie. I don't really rate is as highly anymore.

Agreeed. I've always thought this ("always" being since I read the book).

I don't like Mallrats. It doesn't do much for me at all. I did like Clerks though.

Wow, seeing Donnie Darko and Pulp fiction on this list really makes me wish that we had kept these films to ourselves and not tried to get anyone else to watch them. Donnie Darko is our worst victim, since only a certain type of personality will really appreciate it anyways yet of course I had to go out and preach its greatness to people who would obviously think that it's "just dumb." Next thing you know, it's on a list of cult films which is like... humiliating in some abstract way to those of us who accidentally created a grassroots word-of-mouth marketing movement when it came out, knowing full well that maybe 3% of the nation would not think that is is dumb and "terrible."

I really think we should burn all historical documents that showed Pi is a masterpiece that is also now a "cult classic." Doing so will save many people from seeing something that they will no doubt feel is terrible and stupid. Movies like Pi (i.e. "cult classics"), along with Donnie Darko (which is apparently a cult classic now) didn't make any money for a reason - the consensus said throw popcorn at the screen when they were released. The few of us rejects who these films really struck a chord with kept their names alive, and unfortunately now we have Director's cut re-releases at the check out aisle in Best Buy being bought by people who didn't give a shit about the plot then and probably will give less of a shit now.

i really can't think of a bad cult classic - but going through a list of what is playing at major theaters at any given second will yield 100+ movies that are all making $15-$100 million that are absolute monstrosities which, despite having such an apparent impact on the American public based on sheer success, will be forgotten forever while Donnie Darko will be bought for ages. Funny.

Ha, the sarcasm is strong with this one. Pulp Fiction was a masterpiece that also created an original, consistent atmosphere of "cool" within itself and almost without regard to whatever "cool" was or is. You can't hide something like that from people, especially when the film contains awesome violence and a super-caricature black guy with a gun. Pulp Fiction is to films what Nas is to rap music - you can hate it all day, but you can't throw a stone without hitting a piece of work that was influenced by it in some way.

I recently saw Insomnia which i didn't think was the best. If any of you haven't, you should watch Battle Royale and and Oldboy. Two foreign films that are great, Oldboy is incredible.

Has anyone seen Suicide Kings? Been wanting to watch it, it's older but looks good.

I'd be more inclined to call Resevoir Dogs a cult classic, and Pulp Fiction a regular classic. I love both.

Most of Kevin Smiths movies are terrible anyways in retrospect. They're just comedy/rom coms movies. And not art/cult whatever. Its like Gen X in a bottle or something. Dogma is ok, but I agree that Clerks isn't that great. I mean Clerks II and whatever that movie Jay and Silent Bob strike back godaweful...!!

Donnie Darko, the only way to watch it is the Directors Cut. I think the 80s inspired comedy is really worthy of cult fandom. Its just weird.

Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Snatch is okay, its just not terribly inspired.

Most of Romeros stuff, Dawn of the Dead, etc. Terrible B movie fluff.

Lars Von Triers Antichrist sucked. I voiced my opinion in the orig thread. Terrible movie.

I really don't like Kevin Smith's movies to begin with, cult following or not.

edit, after jpgrdnr's ninja-edit:

Lock, Stock really sticks with me, I thought Snatch was just trying to copy Lock, Stock's formula. Both of them have incredible soundtracks, however.

i think oldboy is way overrated. although i'm interested to see how spike lee adapts it into english.

lock stock and snatch aren't bad. they're fun crime sillydillies.

i fuckin LOVED antichrist.

I really like Lock Stock. I didn't find Snatch anywhere near as good.

I enjoyed Boondock Saints but I don't understand the major hype, I mean, it was a good, funny action movie but it wasn't the action movie of the century or anything like that. It was cool but nothing that blew my mind.
