Stimulants Can you be prescibed the original amphetamine?

It depends on what you're using it for. L-amphetamine is worthless except as a decongestant (see also: L-methamphetamine in Vicks' inhalers) so in the pharmacy practice, where central effects are desired, the D-isomer is almost always favoured. Racemic is sort of a mix between the two - the closest thing in current use is Adderall.

Adderall was originally a blend of amphetamine salts chosen for weight loss (over DL-amph) so they retained some of the perhipherially acting L-amph. It turns out that the formulation worked for ADD too and to save the time and money of approving Benzedrex for ADD (or doing another efficacy study), the FDA just went for Adderall.

Street "speed" in Europe is still DL-amphetamine, though. I think.

I'm unsure whether the hydrochloride salt is still perscribed. But it doesn't really matter, as any simple salt of amphetamine will have the same effects. What does matter is what optical isomer of amphetamine it is (d or l - they're mirror images of eachother, and have different effects in the body).

Other amphetamine salts are perscribed, though:

d-amphetamine/dexadrine/"dexies", normally as the sulfate. This is the good stuff, and yes, it is available, though I havn't been able to scare up a script for it.

Adderall or "amphetamine mixed salts" is a 3:1 mix of d and l amphetamine, as various salts. Since it's 1/4th l-amp, it's got a less favorable effects profile than straight d-amp (more peripheral sideffects).

In the past straight racemic amphetamine (1:1 mix of d and l) was used, this is no longer available as far as I know, thankfully (thankfully because it's inferior therapeutically and recreationally, to d-amp or mixed salts).

As an aside, note that there are a whole buncha amphetamine pro-drugs, sometimes used just to deter abuse, othertimes to provide a form of time-release (vyvanase), these are a different animal, and are less interesting from a recreational perspective, but may work well therapeutically. Also note that despite the fact that while logic dictates that Adderall XR would be the same as Adderall if you bypassed the time release on the XR, reports consistently contradict this, and the majority opinion is that no matter what you do to it, the XR is crap. Certainly that's my experience, and my friends who've taken both the normal and the XR feel the same way.

I have had plenty of both and I prefer plain adderall over dexedrine any given day... don't ask why

I am unsure if you mean a racemeric Amphetamine hcl, or actually something else. If you mean R-Amphetamine (DL-Amphetamine) ie; Benzedrine; not to my knowledge, but Adderall, as was noted earlier is close, Adderall is D,L,LD,DL-Amph Salts (hcl?). I've taken D-Amphetamine (Dexedrine) for ~5 years... it was released circa 1930's so it's pretty old-school.

Wikipedia has a good overview...

Racemic amphetamine was first synthesized under the chemical name "phenylisopropylamine" in Berlin, 1887 by the Romanian chemist Lazar Edeleanu.[51] It was not widely marketed until 1932, when the pharmaceutical company Smith, Kline & French (now known as GlaxoSmithKline) introduced it in the form of the Benzedrine inhaler for use as a bronchodilator. Notably, the amphetamine contained in the Benzedrine inhaler was the liquid free-base,[n 1] not a chloride or sulfate salt.

Three years later, in 1935, the medical community became aware of the stimulant properties of amphetamine, specifically dextroamphetamine, and in 1937 Smith, Kline, and French introduced tablets under the tradename Dexedrine.[52] In the United States, Dexedrine was approved to treat narcolepsy, attention disorders, depression, and obesity. Dextroamphetamine was marketed in various other forms in the following decades, primarily by Smith, Kline, and French, such as several combination medications including a mixture of dextroamphetamine and amobarbital (a barbiturate) sold under the tradename Dexamyl and, in the 1950s, an extended release capsule (the "Spansule").[53]

It quickly became apparent that dextroamphetamine and other amphetamines had a high potential for misuse, although they were not heavily controlled until 1970, when the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act was passed by the United States Congress. Dextroamphetamine, along with other sympathomimetics, was eventually classified as Schedule II, the most restrictive category possible for a drug with a government sanctioned, recognized medical use.[54]

Internationally, it has been available under the names AmfeDyn (Italy), Curban (US), Obetrol (Switzerland), Simpamina (Italy), Dexedrine (US & Canada), Dextropa (Portugal), and Stild (Spain).[55]

According to UK pharmacies, the brand Dexedrine is no longer produced in the UK. It was apparently discontinued in 2010, most likely due to declining numbers being prescribed dextroamphetamine in the country.

Obviously America still has Barr Pharmaceuticals pumping them out, hopefully for decades to come!

I wish whoever made adderall decided to "improve" it slightly and that they came out with a new formula. i feel like a very very small adjustment in the ratio would benefit a lot of people. the levo effects i feel can be taxing on the heart at times, and sometimes you can really feel your heart working if you take a little too much during a study session. i feel like if adderall and dexedrine met halfway, or even if adderall only met dexedrine 25% of the way, it would be perfect.
