Have you got a spare fag mate?

I didn't no you had a job on the side Sam

Aye. It's utter shite but thankfully not too degrading. I'm allowed to be just like I am on here though, which is a bonus. For me, possibly not for my colleagues.

Oh, you should never do that!

I smoked weed for a couple of years before I started smoking fags at age 17. I didn't smoke a lot, mainly socially. Occasionally I would buy a pack but mostly I would just accept them when offered.

I went away travelling at 21 and had to stop smoking weed for a lot of the trip as it was hard to come by in many places I went, and as a result (as well as for the social factor), I began to smoke more fags.

I was on 20 a day by the time I got home, but I decided to cut it down as it seemed pointless now that I could get weed easily again. I cut down significantly but remained a social smoked. One day I got sick of it and just stopped.

I still have a fag on occasion if I'm drinking and one is offered, but that's rare these days. I smoke baccy in my spliffs though, of which I have a couple each day so I guess I haven't completely kicked the tobacco, but I don't need it any more, I never crave a fag.

Started when I was about 14. Hanging out with guys in school who smoked. Used to buy one at a time back then!
Was never a real heavey smoker, 10-15 a day I guess for about almost 18 years
Gave up finally at the 4th attempt about 3 years ago. Still have the occassional urge to smoke but I try to ignore them. Worst is being around people who smoke for the temptation

I used to smoke these...

because I get loads of them for free.

Tried it first when I was about six years old and thought it was disgusting, and never touched one again, 'til, I started smoking weed w/tobacco when I was about 18. Never smoked cigs properly 'til Mephedrone came around and smoking tasted like Heaven; every time I was on mephedrone I would knock out a 20 deck of anything I could get my hands on.

On nights out I usually take a 10 deck of Marlboro Light with me, and give out the odd cig to people I talk to. Now I am strapped for cash, I will buy a pack of Richmond Super King, as a 10 deck lasts like 5 hours of straight smoking.

glad to say i never smoked. one of my better decisions in life i think.

@chainsawWilliams - what part of ireland you from.

Ah the dreaded fags!!! I started smoking when i was 12, i'm 39 now so i have been smoking for 27 years!!! Holy crap!!! that is the first time i have ever worked out how many years i have smoked for. I smoke anything from 10 to 20 a day. I could smoke 40 if i was drinking or taking drugs!!! I gave up 20 years ago for 1 year & 3 months, 9 months was while i was pregnant & 6 months while i was breast feeding my Son, but then i went STRAIGHT back on them, what a bad move!!!

A mate of mine read the Alan Carr book on how to give up smoking & she hasn't smoked since, she has been off them about 10 months. So i bought the book a few days ago, i bought it totally out of the blue, i'm just really curious about what the book is about? I read the first 20 pages & it does seem good. But i was already in the middle of a brilliant book so i'm gonna finish the first book that i started first & then i'll give the Alan Carr one a shot!

I guess i have always kind'a wanted to give up smoking for health reasons, my Father died from smoking related problems many years ago. But i really do enjoy smoking! My hearts not really in it to give up, so i'm dieing to see if the books is any good!!

Good thread Brimz :) you really got me thinking, 27 years!!! Yuk!! :(

The Allen Carr book has a lot of great ways to brainwash yourself into shedding a lot of your preconceptions about smoking. If you open your mind up to it and just accept what he's saying and take it on board it can work for you, it's worked for a few people I know and ideas from it were very useful when I stopped for two years. The fact is that smoking withdrawals are not actually THAT bad, you just have to prepare mentally for them and understand the process and his book is excellent for that.

I successfully gave up smoking tobaco last christmas.

My techique is to stop all smoking, then only smoke a tiny amount when the withdrawl is really bad, just to take the edge off. Over the course of the first few days or so you will find you go into withdrawl less and less often and require less tobaco to feel normal after each experience. Usually this take me about a week or two of effort so i'm not pretending it's easy but then i don't have anything like bezodiazepams i could use to get over the worst of the anxiety so had to look stuff up.

Also to be fair, i've given up smoking at least 3 times now. But each time was for at least a year and there were psychological reasons (namely stress) that i started again.

I've read the Allen Carr book. It didn't do the trick for me, but I think I made error in buying the 'stop drinking' one at the same time. The 'stop smoking' one is really quite good. It goes through the reasons you think you want to smoke and argues against them. The usual "it relaxes me", "I smoke when I'm bored" kinda things. If nothing else, it's interesting. The alcohol one was nowhere near as good -- it tried to follow the same format but he basically just got n the warpath about alcohol being evil. I might get the stop smoking one back off my mum (I lent it to her and she still smokes too unfortunately).

That's an interesting method MrM. I did similar but weaned myself off patches instead (over the course of about a week). Maybe that's why I didn't notice any withdrawal symptoms. I'm not sure I'd have the self control to smoke just a bit!

I'd quite like to quit. I said I'd quit when I turned 25, I'm now 26 and bumped stopping age up to 30. It would be nice to not be a smoker... but I don't wanna be a craving wreck for ages.

Haha, aye they are a bit dodgy. I always end up apologising if some random cunt asks me for a fag lol (as other folk have said, I never say no if someone asks me for one) because they're shite. Good enough when they're free though & aye I do mainly use them for skinning up so it doesn't really matter.

I dunno why but i never had u down as a smoker:?
Personally with regards to quiting like i said i've never tried , the main reason for this is that i don't want to fail . Then i would use this as an excuse to not try again. When i'm ready and find some help that i'm confident in i'll give it a go.
I was impressed with the Nicorrette patches , i've used them on Long Haul Flights and in Hospital , the Gum on the other hand was plain nasty , i hate any gum anyway.
I may have to have a gander at this book that you speak of.

Heh, yep!

Indeed, the gum is VILE. It gave me the worst sore throat ever, not what you want...
I sometimes use the gum or patches on long haul flights, but sometimes I just suck it up and don't use anything.

First cigarette after a long haul flight should be so goood, but it never is for me -- it tastes weird and always makes my head spin!

I've downloaded and listened to a bunch of different online hypnosis mp3s and the quality varies enormously. Some of them are comically bad. Some are just badly targeted. Unless you subscribe to a particular form of a particular religion, visions of gods healing light and angels coming down to say hello is likely to do less good than something more personally relevent to the atheist.

Likewise i listened to one motivational hypnotherapy session by some guy with a mid western accent, who, when he thought he had everyone listening in a trance, proceeded to shout 'do not be lazy DO NOT BE LAZY!' etc. For about 15 mins. Presumably this works on rednecks?

If all else fails look into the new electronic cigarettes. They produce a nicotine enriched vapour you inhale for near identical effects to a cigarrette with hardly any lung damage etc
