Television True Blood

While I've seen every episode, I think the show really lost its legs after the first (maybe second) season. These last two seasons just seem to be "Look what new supernatural thing we can see have sex". Werepanthers? Really? I've never read the books, but if they're anything like the show I'll probably have to pass.

The whole "Eric losing his memory" thing just seems to me like a cheap way for Sookie to get with Eric. They had built him up to be this despicable douche bag, then all of a sudden he's really nice and docile. The scene at the beginning where he confronts Sookie on the road was ridiculous. First he gets aggressive and starts to attack her, then when she runs, he's all of a sudden Mr. Nice Guy. It's just so awkward, and seems to be pandering to people who tune in solely for sexy vampires/werethings, and don't really give a shit about a compelling story with believable characters.
 
^Who cares? This season is awesome stop being so critical. Go watch something else lol. His memory is erased and he doesn't know/remember how vampires act. Its like he is a human with fangs who doesn't understand that vampires have no feelings. You are talking about believable characters, yet this is a show which is COMPLETELY made up dealing with super natural beings... Sounds to me like you are just a hater.
 
^ I'm not a hater, just someone who appreciates good writing in his TV shows. I don't think it's acceptable when writers start to pander to the fans, or when characters act completely out of character. You can still have down-to-earth, relatable characters in a show about the supernatural...which is why i referenced the first couple seasons, when that was done to great effect. I have a hard time relating to any of the characters anymore because none of them seem to have any idea who they are or what they're doing. I mean, look at Tara. She leaves town because of all the crazy supernatural shit that left her traumatized, then when she gets back and Lafayette says "Oh hey, we're going to go to a Witch gathering", she's completely cool with it. Stuff like that sticks out to me and completely ruins my immersion. I haven't seen the last episode yet, but the previews had me rolling my eyes, so I don't expect much.

And Eric is "like a human with fangs"? Is that why he attacked and killed that fairy-thing for no reason other than "she smelled good"? C'mon.

The show seems to expect viewers to just sit slack-jawed in front of the TV saying "YAY MORE SEXY THINGS" and completely ignore all of the plot holes and ridiculous acting.
 
^But a witch gathering is completely different then getting raped and kidnapped with a psycho vampire aka Franklin. The lesbian thing with Tara is unnecessary, but I mean it shows her struggling to find herself. They need to work on her, and just stop just dumping her in situations.

And no Eric didn't just attack Sookie's faerie godmother for the hell of it. Vamps get super "drunk" when they drink off of faeries and their blood, he's still a vampire. So it showed an even more different element to his character showing vulnerability. You're seeing a different side/aka "human side" of the bad boy everyone thinks Eric Northman is. I LOVE TV shows, in this case, True Blood, that show different dimensions to every character and show you subtle things that you have to pick up on, if everything is so obvious, it gets boring as fuck.
 
Tara had made it clear she wanted to get out of town to avoid all of the supernatural stuff, and all of the emotional baggage it carried for her. Which is why it doesn't make sense that she would willingly put herself into a situation where magic is involved. The only real reason she could have for going is that maybe she didn't believe that witches had any real sort of power. But given the world she'd been living in up until that point, especially with the Maryann stuff in season 2, that would be totally retarded. As for her lesbian tendencies, yeah I'm sure it was initially put there for fanboy boner purposes, but I think it shows her general desire to change everything about her life. She left Bon Temps for a reason, right? So it doesn't make sense that she would return to the place of all of her suffering (despite Sookie coming back, which she didn't seem too concerned about to begin with) and immediately get sucked back into all of that supernatural stuff.

Eric DID just attack her for the hell of it. I mean, Sookie has the same blood, right? Why didn't he attack and drain her when they met on the road after Eric got his memory erased? He had enough self-control then, why not later? His "human side" and "vulnerability" are only a result of his memory/personality getting reset. His character was so two dimensional beforehand (aka, a total douche) that the only way to foster a love interest between him and Sookie would be to erase his memory. And STILL he's entirely two dimensional after the spell was cast (aka, a total pussy). I totally agree when you say that when shows become obvious, they become boring. This and the last season of True Blood have been WAY too obvious.

Also, the whole "Vampire Spy" thing...*ahem*. When Bill (who for some retarded reason was a British punk in the 70s) says the term "Vampire Spy", his voice just drips with a mixture of disappointment in the writers and general bafflement at how ridiculous the concept is. It's like Stephen Moyer momentarily breached the fourth wall for to tell viewers "what the hell am I doing here?"

Clearly I don't 'hate' the show, seeing as I've watch enough of it to know what I'm talking about, I just think the writers have run out of ideas. The first season of the show was really good, but I think subsequent seasons have suffered under the weight of the show's premise and expectations of the fans.

He obviously still has vampire instincts but why do you think he doesn't kill Sookie just because she tells him not to. He isn't being the ruthless vampire that he has been the entire show. That's what I meant by the human thing.

I think you are looking way too into the show instead of enjoying it. It's one of the best shows on TV and there is no arguing that. Bill was a punk rocker in the 80's because he was in London or whatever and was trying to prey on humans. Anyways... Why do you even care about something like that. Chill out and just watch the show. If you have so much against it then don't watch.

No, the whole point of Eric losing his memory was so that the writers could 'believably' initiate a romance between him and Sookie. They had been teasing at it ever since she drank his blood, and amnesia is the only way they could accomplish that. It's the oldest and most hackneyed trick in the screenwriter's playbook.

I think you are looking way too into the show instead of enjoying it. It's one of the best shows on TV and there is no arguing that.

LOL! I think there is QUITE A BIT to argue against it as the "best show on TV". I don't think it's the worst, but the best? Eh...

The reason most TV shows suck nowadays is because of attitudes like yours. "Don't think about it, just sit back, slack your jaw, and swallow everything the writers shove down your throat". Sorry, I expect shows, especially those on HBO, to adhere to a higher standard than what is currently being perpetuated by True Blood. The last episode was probably my favorite of the season, mainly because it was directed by Daniel Minahan, who is by far the best in their line-up of directors.

I care about something like that because it doesn't make any sense. What does Bill being a punk rocker in London have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with the story? The whole point of the scene was to show that Bill was approached by the "Vampire League" to infiltrate the monarchy and root out the vampires with anti-human sentiments. They could have put him somewhere closer to his roots and it would have made more sense, but the writers probably decided it would be a good opportunity for Stephen Moyer to display his British accent, which is the only thing that could be surmised from that scene. Things like that annoy me because they are STUPID.

You also seem to be completely missing the point of my posts. I don't have anything against the show, I think it's a good show, but it's disappointing when the writers/directors do a shitty job with an otherwise interesting premise. The fourth episode of the new season pretty much embodied every negative aspect of the show. The cinematography was amateur, the acting was ridiculous (particularly the scenes with Tommy and his mom and those with Sookie and Alcide), the pacing was terrible, and the dialog sounded like it was written by a toddler. Is it the fault of the show? No. It was Michael Lehmann's fault, the director of the episode. I think they just need better writers and directors, or at least people with a fresh perspective on things.
 
I don't know, I think the fans are satiated to a point. Lots of things that happen in the books (which have the literary tenacity of all the other bodice rippers) happen in the tv show, albeit in a weird order, or slightly different. I actually really liked this most recent episode, they really dealt with a lot of things I didn't think they could carry around. But indeed, they hit everyone -- including a really intense set of scenes with Tommy & Arlene & Terry. I hope they don't drop the ball with Jason, and I enjoy it so far, for what it is. The rest of HBOs shows are better, sure, but True Blood is a perfect soap opera imho.
 
the plot's far too obvious most of the time; I'm still sticking to my theories that one of the Merlottes tries to kill the other, to shift and be able to get that $$. Also, that wiccan chick is poised-as-hell to restart the witchVvampire war alluded to earlier.

Like I said though, TV is almost guaranteed to be obvious...i'm a bad cynic in this area, last show I watched b4 this was LOST, which was completely bad-ass until the last season when they completely destroyed the show. I hope I never see one of the writers IRL.. Either way, true blood is entertaining-enough to be watchable, if it weren't for that I'd be stuck w/ the usual of DL'd cartoons, old episodes of Bullshit, and Fox, so gotta say true blood's bad-ass in my book :)
 
What is Bill going to do? Barge into Sookie's house and demand Eric back? I think Bill knows that Sookie's is probably the safest for him. And what, hurt Eric now and destroy Sookie even more? Bill's a dumb character, but not that dumb. It took forever for Eric and Sookie to get together, but it's finally happened.

also, fuck yeah Godric flashback! i want more of those.

So I finally caught up with the current season! It's a silly show, really, but it's a huge guilty pleasure. I wouldn't call it good television, but it's entertaining television, even if sometimes some plot points and characters have me ready to throw the computer against the wall.

And oh god, Bill has me angrier with every episode that passes. And I wouldn't put it past him to do something to Eric. Granted, I think I like Sookie even less than I like Bill - I used to just passively dislike her character, but now she just pisses me off. But I am absolutely infatuated with baby Eric - he's like a sad, lost, Viking puppy (that occasionally kills things).
 
Thank you chitown for stating the obvious, what the show is here for. Sure it has implied ethical questions and whatnot but it is just entertainment packed full of (unfortunately) mythical creatures so why nitpick it like an epic piece of cinema.

My random tidbits since this is my first time posting here:
It's definitely my guilty pleasure show and i've never read the books, but there are some characters I think the tv portrayal was/is golden (i.e. Russell Edgington, Pam, Lafayette). Godric flashbacks are cool, yes.
I think it's great the Eric and Bill have been reversed in several ways, power-wise, evil to good/good to evil (we don't know for how long with Eric), and of course closeness to Sookie. I really don't see Bill as a character I'm supposed to hate, even though his dealings are dirty...that punk rock scene was pretty lame but I was pretty excited Stephen Moyer got to use his real accent.
Alcide..anyone??? anyone. I mean I'm not the biggest fan of the werewolf part of the show but come on...

Agreeed. I really really liked Franklin, and Tara has just been hysterical this entire time. Sure, she's been through a lot...but all I can think about during her scenes is how I would have cooly handled it. She's not down for anything, it's boring.

Oh, and Jessica..well I would just like to see her vampire up and get rid of Hoyt, but I'm sure there love will persist or something stupid like that, he'll still be relevant somehow
