America’s criminal justice system should keep communities safe, treat people fairly, and use fiscal resources wisely. But more Americans are deprived of their liberty than ever before - unfairly and unnecessarily, with no benefit to public safety. Especially in the face of economic crisis, our government should invest in alternatives to incarceration and make prisons options of last – not first – resort.

It annoys me a bit when people bring up the non violent offences thing... you can easily do something that ruins another persons life without being violent!

most nonviolent offenses don't deserve prison time... there are other ways to deal with people who have not crossed the line of violence, especially since prison in no way rehabilitates (and is in fact designed to do exactly the opposite). basically, we're turning nonviolent people into violent people.

and spending a lot of money doing it.

What do you suggest the other ways are?

I'm not defending sending people to prison for relatively petty crimes.... but if someone gets fined or whatever and just refuses to pay or won't comply with whatever punishment... then what is the alternative to sending them to prison?

I'm not saying its right.. I'm just saying thats how the powers at be seem to see it...

I think it really depends on the situation. You can always get them to do community service, mandatory drug rehabilitation (like in Portugal), make white collar criminals work off their crimes (make shady accountants work for free on government books). There a lot of solutions to this issue if you try thinking about it.

For that part of the graphic they should have just focused on people doing time for drugs, instead of lumping them with all other non-violent criminals.
