The Drug Enforcement Administration arrested nearly 2,000 people in the United States as part of a 20-month strike against Mexico's La Familia Michoacana cartel, law enforcement officials said.

In a statement Thursday, DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said the strike, called Project Deliriium, netted 1,985 arrests and $62 million in a blow to the notorious cartel.

Dozens of arrests occurred in several states, including Texas, California, Georgia, Colorado, Alabama, Minnesota and New Mexico.

“Project Delirium is the second successful, strategic and surgical strike to disrupt and destroy one of the most violent Mexican cartels, La Familia,” Leonhart said.

Authorities also seized a sizable stash of drugs, including 2,773 pounds of methamphetamine, 2,722 kilograms of cocaine, 1,005 pounds of heroin, 14,818 pounds of marijuana and $3.8 million in other assets, the statement said.

The crackdown marks a strengthened effort by DEA and Mexican law enforcement officials to collaborate on a major drug trafficking organization, authorities said.

“Law enforcement officials here in the U.S., in Mexico and all around the world are cooperating at unprecedented levels. There is a willingness – like never before – to work hand in hand to fight the cartels, the criminal enterprises and the violent gangs that threaten the peace and security of people on both sides of the border,” said John Morton, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in the statement.

Project Delirium and before it, Project Coronado, were part of a sustained strike against La Familia, which has seen its leadership structure decimated over the past several months by high-profile arrests.

Last month, Mexican authorities arrested La Familia leader Jose de Jesus Mendez-Vargas, aka "El Chango" or "the Monkey."

Is anyone of those 2000 a high level member of the cartels? If not I doubt a raid of this size will even be able to do anything.

Just out of curiosity... how come cocaine comes in kilograms, but all the other drugs come in pounds? :D

I think it depends on where the drugs are made mostly. Cocaine, schwag, mexican dope, mexican meth, etc. come in Kilos because Mexico uses the metric system. The US doesn't use the metric system so drugs produced here are generally weighed in pounds. But stuff trafficked from S. and Central America is weighed in metric.

It's sold to low-level people in pounds because 1 pound= less than 1/2 kilogram and most dealers don't deal enough for kilos to be worth them buying. So most people are familiar with pounds and grams because users buy grams and low-level dealers buy pounds and most people never know about the higher level stuff. It also depends on where it's being made. I've always heard of kilos coming from south of the border, and domestic shit is more commonly weighed in pounds.

Not sure why the article used pounds for everything but coke, I guess that shit was packed in pounds. But I'm pretty sure that South of the border they always use the metric system to weigh drugs. Once it comes into America it probably gets turned into pounds and shit. It's also possible that the coke was seized in just one or a few large busts, whereas the dope, meth and weed were seized in smaller busts of people who only bought in pounds. The coke was seized from traffickers and the other stuff from American dealers. This is all speculation though.

Weed taught me the metric system at a young age.

Also- 2,000 arrests? Goddamn, that's so many people it blows my mind. Crazy how large an operation this was. I'm sure it didn't do shit to stop the flow of drugs, but just the idea of almost 2000 people being arrested in a single operation is ridiculous. So many lives ruined.
