I'm on 1mg suboxone and I take 50mg doxylamine nightly to help with the itching from suboxone and help extra with my insomnia, which is the main reason I'm on the suboxone.

If I wake up in the middle of the night, I've found that I can need doxylamine to get back to sleep. Is it in my head, or does this have a rebound effect? Are addiction and tolerance possible with doxylamine? 50mg is a double dose, is that too much to take every night?

I used doxylamine to get off of the more common sleep aid diphenhydramine. I was on 100 mg of dph a night, and found 50 mg of doxylamine (about twice the common dose) was pretty effective. I don't think you'd develop a tolerance at that level. As far as a rebound effect, I found that taking 1mg melatonin about a half hour before the doxy helped with that.

I used doxylamine at 50mg for about 3 weeks when I stopped taking my bupe. It helped so much. Some times, during the acute withdrawal, I would wake up at night, but this must have had more to do with withdrawal than rebound effects. At any rate I would say don't take more than 50mg as that is already a big dose.

Yeah, there is a rebound effect from these H1 inverse agonists IME. Not only do allergies seem to have more of an impact, sleep can become difficult without them as well. I'd sincerely try to use them only when absolutely necessary.

As an aside, mulungu is by far the best sleep aid I have ever tried.

fwiw i was using doxy at well above high doses (100mg +) for a good few months and experienced no wd symptoms upon cessation. if you're personally experiencing them i would recommend a short taper to avoid such symptoms.

As an aside, mulungu is by far the best sleep aid I have ever tried.

i'm still yet to give the mulungu a trial after starting the thread in here and after all the positive responses i've been reading as of late it has piqued my interest and will be ordering some in the near future

You guys taking this much really is amazing to me! 12.5mg is too much for me... I usually break down the 25mg into three pieces and they work well for me at this level. Any more and I'm groggy as shit the next morning.

Doxylamine is effective at as little as 5mg. So more than 50mg is in my opinion pushing it. Like driving at 100 in first gear. If you need more to get to sleep you should probably be on a different med.

I used doxylamine for about 3 weeks at 50mg then went for a couple of days at 25mg, 12.5mg, 6.25mg and then just stopped. I was ok. But also I increased my avanza dose when I stopped, and, given that avanza is itself sedating, this may have eased the transition.

And things like valerian and magnesium in my view are very good for sleep.

I'm about as sensitive as you to anti-histamines. I don't take them regularly, but 12.5mg of diphenhydramine or 6.25mg of doxylamine is all I need to help me sleep, since I also do suboxone and clonazepam. It's an optimal dose for me to not feel groggy the next day. I'm sure tolerance would grow if I used daily, but it hasn't for me yet. I only use it 1-2x/week on average.

This. Doxy, while way safer than diphen, is not meant to be taken everyday for insomnia. There are some great low-dose tricylic antidepressants out there that will help you sleep consistently without high doses (if you take too much, the antidepressant effects overpower the anti-insomnia effects). I would advise against Lunesta and Ambien, as tolerance will build for these just like for doxy, but taking too much of that stuff can lead to episodes that could ruin your life. My advice is to go out and get some melatonin - the kind that you chew in your mouth and let it absorb in your membranes - or maybe you'd prefer pills. This stuff is natural and reasonably safe even at high doses. Take less of the doxy and a regular melatonin dose, and see how that treats you. Experiment with that, and don't be afraid to see a doctor and ask about non-Ambien/Lunesta/etc sleep solutions. Some of the tricyclics, even at small doses, will potentiate opiates and other drugs, so take that safety-factor into consideration as well.
