Opioids opi tolerance and dental surgery

i have to be seen for my abscess(es?) asap. my cheek is swollen up and the pain has kept me up for days, hurts to chew even easier to eat things terribly. i noticed people on med boards seemed have mostly been given tylenol 3 and at best vic 10. i want to try receive adequate pain management, but the whole script of those prob wouldn't do the trick anything that will increase the likelihood? and i can't get to a dentist today, would i want to go to the ER or the doctor's office ?

We can't tell you what to say to your doctor to get more meds. Rest assured if you start complaining about the Vic 10's then your doctor will switch you to ibuprofen unless he's a true saint. The first thing on your mind should be getting rid of the abscess - pain control is secondary.

It's best to go somewhere like an urgent care centre if you have a problem like this that needs to be looked at. Hospital ER's should be reserved for life threatening ailments, a tooth abscess is not one. A doctor is not going to be able to do anything.

Perhaps you can find a dentist in your area that does emergency calls? Lots of ones in my area have a phone number on their window for "emergency use".

i'm a medic, and in the classroom and on paper, no one can be denied adequate pain management, and an opiate addict who needs more due to tolerance, upon discussing it with treatment provider, is to be given the amount that is adequate for them

i have very serious doubts that this is actually how it works in the real world, it would have been nice though if someone had posted back with such an experience.

getting rid of the infection is obviously a priority over pain management, and painkillers are not the reason for going to a doctor until i can get to a dentist, getting started on antibiotics are. . i am out of town and without transporation and there's no dentists within walking distance, but the infection is very bad, i don't want to wait on those antibiotics
 
and the ER here is actually the one I transport to, and theres an "express ER" wing for things of this nature, and yes actually you are supposed to seek medical attention for a tooth abscess if you can not get into a dentist right away to acquire antibiotics and prevent spreading and septicimia until a dentist can get at the abscess

Not trying to hi-jack...

But my wisdom teeth are starting to bother me. I am 25 and due to shitty teeth genetics, I am missing 1 of them already. I am scared that I will get hydrocodone/apap 10s (better than ibuprofen, but come on...) and, I know this is pathetic, but I can't smoke cigarettes while in the healing process due to dry socket (that I have heard is VERY painful).

I have heard from 2 different sources of dentists giving Demerol for pain...
 
Doctors and dentists (in the states at least) rarely prescribe anything stronger than Vicodin 10's for wisdom teeth. Maybe percocets of some sort if you have a really generous doctor. Why are you scared you'll get narcotics?

Demerol is not any stronger or better, really. In fact, milligram for milligram, hydrocodone is superior. And the doctor is still going to rx you the same number of dosage units.

If your tooth abscess is that much of a problem, go to the ER instead of posting here.
 
Try combining an opiate and a NSAID, like ibuprofen or naproxen. They are usually more than adequate for pain relief.

Also, the pain will greatly decrease after your infected/irritating teeth come out.
 
I have a few things I would like to say about this topic, i am a opiate user/abuser and have often wondered what i would say to a doc if a situation arose where i needed opiates, i couldn't see why telling the dentist you had a high tolerance could hurt your situation and also i am pretty sure a dentist can't prescribe you more than a week or two worth of pain meds also about the percocets are rare for wisdom teeth thing i call bs i got perc 10s for mine and almost all my friends who got their wisdom teeth removed got percs it's pretty standard.

Excellent reply, Sekio. To the OP, I know you aren't trying to swindle the doctors or are just drug seeking. But, here on bluelight we aren't here to tell you what to say to a doctor to get pain medication, regardless of the situation and the actual need for treatment. I'm sorry there are no dentists that you can get to, so the best thing you can do, if the infection is serious, is to simply go to the emergency room.. They aren't going to turn you away and should be able to help you in the mean time before you can see an actual dentist.

I'm going to close this since it is a self serving thread. It doesn't fall within the boundaries of harm reduction and the standards we are trying to uphold. I wish you luck and hope you can get the situation taken care of properly. Seeking professional help is the only thing you can do, since we are not doctors on here and cannot treat your infection via internet or provide you with any medication or treatment.
