In movies and on TV (great sources, I know) they always show junkies having black marks under their fingernails and stuff. I'm wondering if this actually happens and mostly why? Is it actually dope accumulating under there or what?

there might be a better more specific reason, but my guess is that it may just be part of how media likes to depict heroin users being in very poor physical health.

It's because junkies are supposed to be "dirty" in the eyes of the modern media.
