Wisdom Teeth Removal & APAP Allergy

Hello, everyone! First, let me say that this is not about tricking doctors into prescribing pain killers or anything like that.

In a week from now, my girlfriend will be getting her wisdom teeth removed, and neither one of us is looking forward to the aftermath. (It might not be that bad, but we're expecting the worst.)

Anyway, my girlfriend has a hard time taking acetaminophen; I don't think it's an allergy, exactly, but a sort of intolerance to it. It makes her feel vomity, I guess, and upsets her stomach easily.

She wrote on the intake form that acetaminophen upsets her stomach, and the oral surgeon assured her that he would prescribe something different.

My question is this: Has anyone ever found themselves in a similar situation, and what exactly can my girlfriend expect to be prescribed?

I imagine maybe something like high-dose ibuprofen, maybe, or maybe something like Tramadol? Any thoughts?
 
Thanks for the quick reply! I'm just wondering how effective something like higher dose ibuprofen will be at relieving whatever pain she's in (if she's even in a lot of pain; I once had a friend who went out for a steak dinner after having his wisdom teeth removed -- ouch!)
 
I was prescribed both ibuprofen and Vicodin when I got mine out and the ibuprofen was actually pretty effective with combined with the Vicodin. If she has a lot of swelling then the ibuprofen will help a lot.

Everybody's different, though. The nice thing about ibuprofen is its OTC so even if she doesn't get prescribed it you all can still give it a try.
 
I asked for the Michael Jackson drug when I had a couple teeth yanked, cost's more these days
for anasthesia, but you dont feel/remember anything, had dilaudid prescribed for post pain.
Dont let the docs' only prescibe motrin, unless thats what you want...
If it's not a surgeon, I wouldnt let them remove spit.

LOL yeah this is an oral surgeon who will be removing the wisdom teeth. I've never heard of dilaudid being prescribed for wisdom teeth removal. It will depend upon how bad the pain is, of course, and we don't know that yet, but I don't want to see my girlfriend without something to take the pain away. If higher dose ibuprofen does the trick, then that will be just fine. If not, then I hope there's something they can do. Vicuprofen, or whatever.
 
There will definitely be something, try not to worry :)

As others have said I would definitely take ibuprofen alongside whatever else you get, regardless of whether it is prescribed or not, as it will help the swelling go down. Your gf may be prescribed a stronger anti-inflammatory actually, so ask the doc what they think :)

^Indeed, there are actually a good amount of NSAIDs on the market that are prescription-only. If the OTC stuff (ibuprofen, naproxen [Aleve]) doesn't work, there are more powerful prescription ones available).

An anti-inflammatory with a medium-strength opiate (hydrocodone, oxycodone) is usually the course of action, however, because not all the pain is going to go away even if all the inflammation does.
 
I am a receptionist for a Dentist DDS. Let me ask you a few questions. Is she getting all four wisdom teeth out at once.? Are they impacted.? Nine times out of ten we give demerol with phenergan if you are 17 and older ..if you are getting all four out at once.

whoa! Thanks for posting! Yeah, she is getting all four wisdom teeth out at once, and I believe that two of them may be impacted. (Impacted means that they're below the gums and haven't erupted at all, right?)

Yes, that is correct. If she is having all that done in one day, and they try to give her some bullsh%* ...she can always request something without apap. And remind them of her APAP Allergy. I don't think they will have a problem with doing so with all she is getting done in one day. Tell her not to worry. Most DDS's will give good pain meds. 25-50 mg of demerol is no big deal. She will be in so much pain that she won't get a buzz for the first few days ..just relief. Maybe after three days she will get a nice buzz from them. I know from experience :)

You could ask for hycodan which is a hydrocodone only syrup. Like nthreat said vicoprofen is another option and might work well. I remember my jaw swellling up a lot so the nsaid might be really helpful. All else fails you could do cold water extracts to get rid of your apap.
 
When I got my wisdom teeth out (all four were impacted) they prescribed me percocet. I would imagine she will get the equivalent but with ibuprofen or aspirin instead of APAP. My guess would be percodan or vicoprofen, especially since two of her teeth are impacted. Or tramadol if you are unlucky.

As long as you clean the sockets regularly (which is nasty) and don't get dry sockets, having wisdom teeth removed is completely painless. I never experienced any pain post-surgery.
