Hello all, i just got back from the doctor and he's putting me on 20mg of celexa for my depression. I already have a really low libido and don't have much interest in sex and i'm worried that when i start this ssri that it will go any lower. Does anyone have any personal experience with this one?

ive never tried that specific one, but I can almost guarantee that you will experience decreased libido, it is a commodity among SSRI's :/.

So what's the follow-up on this? My wife is starting Celexa today and I'm curious if I'm gonna have to become better acquainted with my hand.

Does anybody have any experience with Celexa that they could share?

Preeshiate it....

It's an SSRI so it could totally kill someones sex drive.

If she's wants to get her a sex drug I used to take them all the time when I was on Abilify. You could try amphetamines (or any stimulant for that matter), Marijuana, I've heard Kratom can work, even caffeine if you're desperate, etc.

Hell I'm not a doctor but if it works she might want to switch to Wellbutrin. It's A DNRI if you know what that means. Not only will it not kill you're sex drive but it bumps that shit up.

Hope my advice helps save you from the horror of the hand 8o

Wellbutrin is just a NDRI, it acts on norepinephrine and opamine (same neurotransmitters that amphetamines and Ritalin work on).

SSRIs are routinely used to treat premature ejaculation. In my opinion SSRIs should be reserved for treatment-resistant major depression and you should be trying something else, like tianeptine, mirtazipine, or Wellbutrin.

Citalopram absolutely fucking killed my sex drive. Even after not taking it for a year (although I take other meds, there was a time I only took benzos in, which never harmed it before citalopram) my sex drive is still pretty much dead. This is just my personal experience, but citalopram = unconscious unawakenable sex drive.

Fantastic.

I'm on Wellbutrin and my libido has gone from mature guy in his 30's to 17-yr-old kid at spring break.

Her doc wanted to start her on celexa and wellbutrin would be a fallback position if celexa didn't work out.

Crossing fingers....

Associated side effects with Celexa are Sexual dysfunction, which includes decreased sex drive in women and difficulty ejaculating in men, is associated with the use of citalopram. In some patients, it may take up to 12 weeks for these side effects to disappear. In some patients these sexual side effects never resolve. If sexual side effects continue, the dose of citalopram may be reduced, patients can also have drug holidays where the weekend dose is either decreased or skipped, or they can discuss with their physician the risks and benefits of switching to another antidepressant. Most SSRI (anti-depressants)

Hope this helps.

well ..
im male btw.

I started celexa/citalopram on saturday.

Usually i masturbate every single day , sometimes up to 4 times a day lol.

But since ive been taking these... Less. Not even every day anymore
thats a good thing for me, but not for you i guess.

Shit.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Looks like I'll be either:

A. Becoming acquainted with my hand - for possibly the rest of my life.

or

B. Finding a creative way to dispose of her pills and get her on Wellbutrin instead.

I literally opened up BL on my laptop after dancing the horizontal monster mash with my girlfriend for awhile (and consuming our fill of extracted methylphenidate, cannabis, and my grandmother's homemade goulash).

She is on Celexa though. I believe she is back to the 40mg range. She started last summer, began to taper around may only to make the decision to keep it due to it's benefits and working back to her dosage. I've been dating her going on like 2 and a half years. I've noticed no change in her libido. we still fuck whenever applicable (2~3 times a week due to our attending different schools/jobs/etc), and if anything, she just takes a little longer to climax but gets there none the less.

HOWEVER, this is just my experience. SSRIs are notorious for assasinating one's sex drive, but atleast there's a glimmer of hope, lol.

Every SSRI I've taken essentially made ejaculation impossible.

SNRI's on the other hand seem to make orgasms more intense; for me at least

I hated celexa with a passion. Took it for two weeks and threw them in the trash. Gave me jaw clenching, nausea, sweating and yes - absolutely killed my libido and made it hard to keep an erection up.. after 7 days of quitting celexa/citalopram it was back to normal..

Ive been on Citralorpram 20mg per day for around 18 days.

Im yet to feel any beneficial effects although i have noticed excessive yawning, sweating and sleeplessness to be the most noticeable side effects :( i expect the negative sexual side affects to appear over time.

I have an appointment with my GP on wenesday.

Does anybody know a credible alternative to Citralopram?

As many posters have mentioned, it is possible, in fact, its a common side effect of SSRIs. Some doctors even use them as a treatment for premature ejaculation.

The only real way to know is for you to give it a shot yourself. SSRIs are a fickle class of drugs to say the least, so just because its happened to other people doesn't mean it will happen to you.

Correct, not everybody reacts the same to medications and not everybody will experience sexual side effects. The majority will but not everyone.

Randomly, my most recent roommate was on it, and had a very active sex life. I haven't taken it in almost a year and guess what? Sex drive is still dead. Masturbating daily before that, now once a month if I'm lucky, talked to the gyno...I really hope it comes back. I hope I'm not one of those people affected permanently but honestly, I'm really starting to wonder. Just throwing this out there. (I took it for...2 years? give or take?)
