Stop resisting!
Afghanistan is the world's number one grower of poppies - and the country has now held this designation for an uninterrupted decade. Afghan opiates supply more than 90 per cent of European and Central Asian markets. Nothing impedes the narcotics trade, not the Karzai government declaring it illegal, not the Qur'an forbidding it, attempts to eradicate it by Governor-Led Eradication (GLE) teams, or the intervention of the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

The opium economy makes up an estimated 35 per cent of Afghanistan's GDP. It is vital to the livelihoods of millions of Afghans who work all along the poppy chain: from farming families, to heroin lab workers, to truckers who smuggle the drugs across borders.

Argibusiness or terrorism?

Afghanistan excels at poppy cultivation and the manufacturing of raw opium gum into a range of narcotics. Narcotics are global commodities that live double lives. They are sold legally to the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture into morphine and codeine for medicinal use (pain control and anesthesia) and are sold to the illegal market in the form of smokable opium and injectable heroin. If the production and sale of opiates were legal, such as the drugs caffeine and nicotine, Afghanistan wouldn't have a cabal of national and international narcotics control forces waging a violent drug war that criminalises ordinary Afghans trying to survive in a war-torn economy and brands the country an outlaw, failed "narco-state".

The drug warriors in the DEA, the White House and the Pentagon have intentionally conflated the war on drugs and the war on terror in Afghanistan. Call it a "twofer", more bang for the billions of bucks being spent to wage wars that have no exit strategies because they can never be won. Pairing drug hysteria with the fear of terrorism is powerful propaganda for the United States, and recasts and promotes what is in reality an imperialist war as a war against a "narco-insurgency" or "narco-terrorism". The ancient and pain relieving plant papaver somniferum [the opium poppy] is now referred to as a narco-terrorism crop. It is agribusiness, not terrorism.

. . .

The war on Afghan poppy can never be won. But there is a solution to the so-called poppy problem: License farmers to cultivate poppy and manufacture morphine to sell to the pharmaceutical industry. And secondly, to eliminate the black market, legalise and regulate the consumption of all drugs. Licensing and legalisation would have immediate and life changing benefits for the people of Afghanistan: Millions would no longer be considered criminals, violence would decrease, the salaam system of crop payment that rips off poppy farmers would be eliminated, drug profits would stay in the country, and the barbaric practice of selling young girls and women into sexual slavery to pay drug debts known as "opium brides" would end.

But the drug warriors don't want that because they're addicted to the drug wars and they need narco-terrorism to justify their imperialist fix.

- isn't karzai's brother one of the major drug lords?!
- how was it uninterrupted? i thought that production plummeted when it was banned (during taliban rule)

both. duh.

can anyone elaborate on the US's practical(not stated!) position re poppy fields? was under the impression we fully allowed it, no?

When the Taliban was in control of Afghanistan, there was hardly any opium coming out of the region because they'd fuckin KILL YOU! The CIA has been involved in the heroin trade since WWII and what a coincidence, we march into Afghanistan and a year later they are pumping out 90% of the worlds dope.

The drug warriors in the DEA
UGH! Self righteous scum of the earth!

OP

Agreed!

SR: I agree with you on both points. In a docu I saw today, an officer showed old scared poppies and daid dtraight out "I'm not involved in readicating drugs (opium and the smaller hash business that still exist.) This is in Helmand province were Karzai's corrupt brother wielded alot of influence and i think was even a government.

Fighting drug is contrary to national security because it inhibits the "hearts and minds" approach. This year Europe who get most of their heroin from Afghanistan suffered a drought. This is because a number of factors but the US started going after opium to an extent. Obama wanted to be seen as an "internationalist" unlike Bush who didn't give a shit about opium as long as those war lords worked with us and not the Taliban.

As for the drought of 2000-2001 that was a result of the Taliban baned opium- not because of international pressure or b/c it was "un Islamic" like they said officially but because, misogynistic scum that they are, were trying to decrease the supply for opium so they could artificially increase the price and keep increase in orice that sustained in subsequent years. This is an idea they probably got from their Islamic friends in OPEC.

But ultimately b/c they were deposed for harboring Obama. This proved to be a boon for opium growers that sold supplies of opium at a discount to wholesalers who they were in debt to. This is the reason why supply in Europe increased sharply and the price decreased as time went on. This seems to have peeked in 2007.

The European's hated Bush. But Ironically as far as heroin is concerned- he did more for the supply of cheap high quality heroin in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Russia and its former republick's than any other president. Obama became very involved in the war and reacting to criticisms from Russia (who were threatening to invade), and EU nations (especially the UK that became involved in crop eradication and the Deutch police that was tasked with training Afghan counternarcotics units)- decide to implement a crop substitution, smaller scale eradication effort of his own in 2010.

ButNATO is drawing down. Karzai who is corrupt as fuck as is his brother as we all know (Karzai has been compared to boss twead)- will probaly resume production- or they might institute supply caps to keep the prices artificially high.

ph0r- the poppy levels were insanely high before we went there, they were always a huge producer except for what jspun mentioned

jspun- damn i didn't know obama did that, gg google (it doesn't seem to have done much though, iirc the 2010 figures were still in the upper 80%'s/lower 90%'s)

lol @ taking the initiative from OPEC- maybe canada(pot), N.south amer(coke), afghanistan(dope), and mx(great hub!) will form OD(rugs)EC ;PPP

^^this. :!
since the day I saw those HUGE poppy-fields full of pods with 20-30mg morphine-equivalent each (seriously: 4 of them felt really close to a serious overdose) in northern france I really wonder why the fuck we don't buy the stuff from the afghans...

i have heard that hamid karzais brother owns a restaurant here in baltimore called the helmand and it has paintings of poppies all over the walls, great place if you like afghan food.

what else are they going to grow? coffee?

The Taliban bans poppy growing in Afghanistan. As a result, the opium yield drops dramatically in 2001, from 3,656 tons to 185 tons. Of that, 83 percent is from Northern Alliance-controlled lands. This is supposedly done in response to Western pressure. [Observer, 11/25/2001; Guardian, 2/21/2002; Reuters, 3/3/2002] However, United Nations officials later suggest that the ban was actually used by the Taliban to drive up their drug profits. According to these officials, for several years, the Taliban had stockpiled over half of their annual opium harvest in a series of warehouses around the country. When the ban begins, a kilogram of opium sells for around $44 wholesale, but one year later the price rises to $400. [USA Today, 10/16/2001] Time magazine will later suggest that the ban was the idea of al-Qaeda’s financial experts working with Haji Juma Khan (see December 2001 and After) and other alleged top Afghan drug traffickers. The ban “meant huge profits for the Taliban and their trafficker friends who were sitting on large stockpiles when prices soared.”
