anywho... i found this online petition to end the war on drugs and just thought maybe this is the sort of thing an online community like bluelight could have a big impact on

I think these things that require you to use your real name are like deer feeders; someone is crouching 100 meters away with a rifle.

You think? It's only your name... And 600,000+ people is a lotta shootin'!

Is this the one that was posted before or a new one?

same one i posted before.

definatly good to have a repost. Though the whole commission this thing was aimed at has already came and passed and led to the white houses rediciouslos comments on the drug war

I clicked and signed a fake name. What are they going to do? Email me back for name verification, demanding a copy of my driver's license and birth certificate?

Dude just because you sign a petition to call off the drug war does not necessarily mean you use "illegal drugs." I know tons of people that don't or have never used drugs that believe that drugs should be legal and the drug war is nonsense.

honestly, i have no idea how an internet poll of this sort could matter in the 1st place. telling me you can just write 'john doe' only reinforces it ;PP

Maybe you can only sign once per ip address, otherwise people could just spam it. So most people that signed it probably do agree with it. Your name doesn't really matter.

^ Lol, well done, you're probably one of maybe 0.1% of people that bothered to do that!

ok I just signed it as Dirk Nowitzki, through TOR
LOL u inspired me :)
just signed as dirk diggler, using tor through 15 proxies ;P
/if that's possible. no i did not sign :|

HerbalJah- it's not that signing it, in and of itself, seems particularly dangerous to most people. however, the idea of being catalogued anywhere as 'pro-drugs' is worrisome, as being catalogued on more than one (depending which, of course) could absolutely put it to the point of, essentially, knowing someone uses/recently used/is around people who use.

Catalogued how, though? Sure it's probably possible to identify the people who 'signed' it (without using proxys) but it would really be a lot of effort. The name doesn't help at all, you'd have to get the list of ip addresses of everyone who signed it from the site that hosts the petition, then get the addresses from all the ISP's, and warrants for some (all?) of that information...

not good enough to know how tracking could be done, but know enough about mathematics to tell you how.
let's say we're talking about a pretty watched-topic in the US: clandestine methamphetamine production.
now, let's say that johnny doe wanted to become a meth cook. johnny goes online to some generic sites (not illegal / doesn't prove anything), johnny goes to walmart and buys a bunch of products (not illegal / doesn't prove anything). a few weeks later, johnny's cell phone starts registering a bunch of odd activity (not illegal / doesn't prove anything).
These activities, in and of themselves, prove nothing. Add them up, and you can be pretty damn sure johnny was cooking meth.

Signing a petition isn't going to put you on a watch list, but to pretend these things cannot be catalogued, indexed, and used with pretty good precision (once combined) is naive.

ok well with that sort of "fraddy-cat" nonsense is what you wanna live by then so be it. But what you don't realize is that the drug war is no just about drugs, its about peoples freedom.. U need to grow up and stop being such a wallaby.

the thing that some people maybe don't immediately grasp is that some of us have to be well-groomed professionals in our daily lives and that anything on the internet that contains our real names can potentially come back to haunt us.

I am probably significantly poorer today because my real name is connected on the internet to many accounts of criminal activity. These days I use my real name for nothing online. I have no Facebook, no Twitter, no LinkedIn, etc.

Yeah but your name on it's own means nothing. In this case it would have to be linked to a physical address, through your ip address, to be worth a damn. And that's something that would probably be difficult for law enforcement to do; employers, forget about it. And, as some of you have shown, it's pretty easy to prevent that if you really want by using a proxy.

Facebook is different, you can tell someone is who they say they are by their photos, friends and things they say.

While we're kind of on the topic, what does your alias mean :) I've thought about it and got nowhere!

^It's something I picked up from page 19 here. I wish I could change it.

Real name... unfortunately I'm the only person on earth with my first and last name. The uniqueness used to be cool, but over the years it's become an albatross.
