For anyone under 16 you have to be careful not to over-stretch, as their tendons are a lot less stiff than an adult's. If they stretch too far, they'll never go back, which then makes it hard to properly stretch out the related muscles without injury.

Otherwise, go nuts. I'd suggest maybe taking the kids to a few classes with someone who is trained in teaching yoga to kids in order to get a few pointers, but for the most part it's just playing around. What could be more natural for a kid to do?

Good point!
In my practice, if I have the time, I will rehab the tissues that were being conditioned by applying a technique ( IDK need source for its REAL name ) that eases you back into the rest of your life and you get to keep the benefits of your time spent doing the physical activity wether its yoga or static stretching or whatever you do.
When you stretch, you are basically creating micro tears in the tissue and when they heal, immediatly your body repairs itself. If you are doing intense yoga and then suddenly give it up, your body is going to be in full on repair mode and become very stiff. Much stiffer than you have ever been before because you just introduced your muscles to the physiological aspect of exercised introduced stress. Upon abandoning your stretching routine your muscles will have the chance to repair themselves fully due to the time constraints ( you use to stretch every day or alot, giving your body NO time to heal ).
Micro tears or scar tissue is a hard inflexible growth. It actually inhibits your flexability.
Get rid of it by gently stretching that area very gently through repeated applications. For example, a ridge of hard bony scar tissue near your crotch could take less time to get rid of through this application of rehabilitation because you are always walking and thus putting light physical exertion on it.

So.........when I know I have to take an extended break from yoga, I spend a few weeks doing less intense sessions not fewer sessions before I am forced to give up.

im not trying to be nitpicky, but micro tears in muscle create scar tissue? i thought the basic principle of anabolism was you tear the muscle a lil bit, and it grows back stronger - so if there's scar tissue, wouldn't muscles automatically be full of scar tissue no matter what you did, since they had to be torn to grow there in the 1st place?
(and do you mean keep the benefits after you stop your routine? or stay stretched/flexible after you leave the gym?)
