How effective is Methadone in treating physical pain, particularly pain that's chronic?

If at all possible, when replying please try & reference other pain medications that Methadone would likely be just as effective as, or more/less effective than. Vague responses like (for example) "not super effective" aren't really going to help me much. However, responses like (for example) "most people find that 10mg of Methadone works as well for their pain as 10mg of Percocet" would be enormously helpful!

This might help.

Generally comparisons are for analgesia but as this was made for people who abuse them their recreational strength might be more of a factor. Still definitely interrelated.

Methadone has a long half life which makes it good for chronic pain as you can maintain a solid dose in your system for extended periods of time as opposed to the more drastic peaks and valleys of short acting narcotics or the other issues with ER preparations.

I'm not sure what else you are trying to ask and can't really determine if this thread belongs here or somewhere better.

I have back pain & I tried 5mgs of Methadone before just to see what it was like. The high is definitely different than any other opiate & it was very effective for my back pain. Actually, it was better than any other opiate I have tried for my pain & I have tried Percs, Vicodin & Oxy.

I wont take it again because of how it increases my tolerance, something I rather not do. Methadone will increase your tolerance quickly if you keep taking it.

Taking any opiate increases your tolerance to that drug. lol... But I think what you're trying to say it that it will block your receptors from any other opiates, meaning you won't get high anymore from any other opiate...all depends on how much you take, your dosage of the other opiates etc. but if you just want to get high...yeah methadone is not for you lol.

Personally-
1. Methadone is the best opiate for chronic pain because of its long half-life and how cheap it is at the pharm...if you get generic (even if you have insurance or not) but sometimes very expensive on the street...
2. One of the hardest parts is finding the right dosage for yourself...it could be anywhere from 5mg to 300mg a day! I take around 120mg twice daily...it's kinda high in my opinion...but i've known people who had to take far more...it all depends on how much pain you are in....I have severe scoliosis so, yeah you could say I have chronic pain and the only reason I take opiates is because I don't have insurance for the surgery, so i'm kinda screwed.
3. It takes awhile for your body to get used to the drug...if you're getting very tired, like falling asleep in class on even driving! then you are taking too much. You should be slightly sleepy for a few weeks at most. My doctor prescribed me adderall for class and to help me stay awake. I have so much pain I have to take a high dose so I get pretty sleepy sometimes...
4. The pain relief is amazing! It works so good because of the long half-life, you don't get the highs and lows as amapola stated....you feel much more normal.
5. The withdrawals will be the worst thing you have ever felt...unless you know what heroin withdraws feel like....take it like its supposed to be taken....make SURE to taper off if you don't like it or wanna switch to try another opiate....
