Hi guys,

I'm the web editor over at SF Weekly in San Francisco. Wanted to let you guys know about an article we posted this morning, "The Six Most Literary Drugs."

Drugs have historically either inspired most writers or at least given them momentary reprieve from their inner turmoil. Here's our guide to the six most literary drugs -- what they'll do to you, what you'll write while wasted on 'em, and what books to read while blasted.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Best,
Jake Swearingen

Wot no hashish? You find room to include alcohol twice but no hash? Or opium? Cahmaaaaan.

A bit surprised nor cannabis neither LSD were on the list. I know you can't include all, but I'd say they are more literary than, say, valium.

Edit: If you're wondering why we're having fun at the mushroom pic, it's because it's an Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric), not a psilocybin ("magic") mushroom.

I don't blame them tbh, it's certainly more visually striking than a Psilocybe, and the only people who are going to notice are druggies (and we're going to bitch and whine regardless of the content).

Not really. He starts out with morphine, but spends most of the book shooting heroin.

does he? I remember him going on for many chapters about harassing "croakers" for "morphine scripts" and not really buying shit on the street until he moves to Mexico. I only read it as a kid so maybe I need to pick it up again...

why do they suggest "On the Road" for cocaine?
i never got through all of On The Road, but last i knew, amphetamines (benzedrine) are mentioned/used (as is alcohol and weed) but not cocaine...

Same with the books for what to read on Heroin?! Like wtf?

And i agree, you forgot probably the 2 best and most widely used drugs by writers! And those 2 drugs are MARIJUANA & OPIUM!!!!

for real though, the 2 drugs that have helped me write (when I used to publish) are alcohol and DXM. Especially DXM. It's not significantly disabling like many other hallucinogens/psychedellics/dissociatives and it makes you able to accurately depict the convergences of world and flesh and mind. Solid matter liquefies and energy congeals so that both can be molded into Rodin-like objects that are hard as bronze but fluid as mercury. Give it a try!

Are you on DXM right now?

yeah laudanum should be on there since it inspired alice in wonderland. if writing music were to be included into this, LSD would HAVE to be on there. but no weed? thats very odd. also, yes jack keroac used bezedrex not coke. and thats an amanita mushroom. but maybe that was the point? seeing as it inspired the bible and other early religious texts. (or i suppose i believe amanitas to have...) although the article is clearly talking about psilocybe mushrooms.
