Cannabis keeping drug-abuse under control?

Two weeks ago I quit weed after smoking weed (with a bong) on a daily basis. I'd sometimes combine it with cocaine and/or Oxycontin whenever I'd feel like it. I always liked those 2 with weed but I'd barely buy any, as I never really had a craving for either. Perhaps because I was really high pretty much every time I could. (when out of work etc.)

Now it's been 2 weeks since I smoked any weed, and been really bored when I'm home so 2 days ago I decided to get myself some cocaine again. After a long evening and night all of it was gone sadly, but the day after after I had a couple of beers I had such an incredible craving for cocaine again, it was almost worrying.

I've talked about this with a friend and he had the same after he quit weed. As if smoking weed kept my 'other' drug use under control. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Well, Going from daily smoking to not at all will have some side effects such as craving. Your body thrived on getting high in your spare time, and that feelgood feeling you got is now gone, so you are replacing it with harder drugs. Yea you could do blow/pills while smoking and not feel addicted(here comes the speculation)to other things due to the fact you were getting your fix from smoking, but now that you don't, you are craving the things you enjoy most. Plus the addiction for blow, rolling, oxy etc is much higher then bud, and I personally crave them all the time, even with daily smoking. So it could be very possible that you are finally hitting the point where you are doing them enough that you are craving them alot more, and it just happend to be the same time as you are taking a break from smoking. Either way, you could always try smoking again and see what happens.

The chronic boredom/unmotivation that comes with a break after some heavy smoking, coupled with the cravings for oher drugs could easily lead to abusing other substances quite easily imo.

It all boils down to would you rather be railing coke every night or lighting a reefer, addiction is still addiction though whether it be to plants or powders!

no, i find that weed goes perfectly with other drugs, except maybe excess amounts of alcohol, then i just get the spins! not fun :(

but i have been smoking pot for 10yrs, 7yrs daily..and i still get high off 1-3 hits of hash/kief. i don't like taking more than that because i get to high and a little uncomfortable. i think its bullshit when people say they don't get high anymore, they need to get some better weed or invest in some hash.

is marijuana a gate-way drug? for me, maybe a little. sometimes i get a little bored with just weed and i need something else to hit the sweet spot. for you since you don't smoke daily, i think it doesn't really effect you in any way...

i know plenty of people with dispensary weed/hash that say they can't get high anymore. mostly it has to do with smoking way more than you need for extended periods of time, not the quality of your weed

that being said, when i don't have weed and can't find any more, i' more likely to try to find other kinds of highs. I drink more, i trip more, i eat more pharms. with weed i rarely feel the need to because weed is good enough for me.

then they were smoking way to much. and they are probably are still getting high, just not as high as they used to with mass amounts of weed. i've done all there ways of smoking, that is smoking all day every day, just smoking at nights, just taking 1-3hits every time, every different option, and i find that i like this way the best. i've always gotten high after all these years and still get very baked. sucks for them i guess!!! 8)

The older I get the more I appreciate cannabis for the wonder drug it undoubtedly is. I find that a constant supply of good quality weed / hash keeps the desire for other drugs down to a minimum. Unfortunately for me a prolonged period of being unable to get hold of any pot led to a 15 year heroin addiction.

When I quit smoking daily, I started running through scripts (legally obtained) of oxymorphone, percs, roxies, etc. Went from daily smoking, to daily doping. Well about a month ago now, I started smokin' bud again and have quit opiates all together... So if your question is "can cannabis keep other drug use down?" then I would answer with a "yes".

I would not go so far as to say cannabis keeps other drug use in control, as I know many people who use hard substances regularly in conjunction with trees... So, I believe it is a degree of control from the person using. Cannabis offers a nice escape from sobriety without really digging it's heels into your life, besides your wallet.

ya smoke a splif and forget about the coke cravings w/ lorazopam or just try to sleep until the half life of the coke is through your system

I agree. Substituting one drug that you have an addiction or abuse problem with for another isn't good.

I was not an alcoholic but I had a period of my life where I was abusing lots of alcohol daily and in large amounts for a long time.

I slowly cut back from the booze and started smoking herb with the reasoning that it was better to get high and stay high all day long instead of getting drunk like that, but then I became a total pothead.

I do drink alcohol and occasionally vaporize but I no longer abuse either drug.

Yes my craving for other drugs (alcohol especially) tends to go way up if i haven't been smoking weed.

When I smoke I am a lot more content with where I am mentally. Smoking weed allows me to drink a lot less, and not think about doing other drugs. If I drink without it, I tend to drink as much as possible. If I have a few beers followed by some weed, I don't drink much for the rest of the night because I am happy where I am.

I've been clean for about 2 weeks as well, but I've still been smoking. I don't consider weed as something I should stay away from since it calms me down but mainly b.c it alters my state of mind (instead of using stims or downers) and I don't have any negative side effects when im using bud as well as when I'm not using it. I mean if you don't get high one day your not gonna be strung out

Being a drug addict for so long, I've become seriously dependent on an outside source to alter my mood, and since i can keep my priorities in order I don't see any problem with even toking every day, especially if you have idle time and are bored off your ass, which tends to happen a lot now that Im not gettin fucked up on everything

Basically, the weed just levels me out. When I get that urge to blow a line or w.e I'll smoke a bowl and it usually goes away, plus it helps pass the time and makes a lot of things more enjoyable. This is just my experience and how I deal with it. If someone can't control their weed use and can't function without it then I wouldn't reccomend it

same here.

when i initially quit weed a lil over 5 weeks ago, i was getting hammered like every night just so i could try and sleep, and also to try and fill my time in the evenings. it was like i had all this extra time i wasn't used to, and i had no idea what to do in a sober state of mind lol.

i dont get the craving anymore tho, except a little on weekends.

I think it does...my benzo use tends to get sorta ridiculous when I'm low on bud, and I end up taking opiates/other pharms to try to make up for it. If I've got tons of weed and my bong, I find that I take much fewer drugs on a regular basis. I don't know if this is true for everyone though, since I feel as if after trying certain drugs, people tend to lose their love for weed. I know me and the fellow moderators still <3 weed no matter what though :)

I'm guessing a likely scenario is you're self-medicating with drugs for some other underlying problem and so it doesn't really matter how you're altered, you just want to get there.

Sorta, I take Lamictal daily and I'm supposed to take Risperidal but I don't, along with benzos. I think weed helps even me out more, they say I'm borderline, possibly bipolar and major depressive, but I seem to function relatively fine in society. I enjoy my self-medication, I think it's very effective moreso than the random pills (except benzos, they are my second DOC to pot), if only that wasn't going to be a bitch now that I need a real, nice paying full time job 8)

Most definatley.. Weed played/plays a very big role in keeping me off opiates which I had a very severe addiction to for over 2 years. It helps alot with cravings and the incredibly strong desire to not be sober.

I'm just curious what lamictal does for you? It was recommended to me when I was quiting amphetamines.

As for smoking weed and staying off drugs. Weed works for alot of ailments, sense it helps alot you dont need other drugs.

I find it can go one way or another, when i'm dry and haven't had any bud for awhile and i'm doing lines of whatever i'm going to crave weed. So it's going to have like the opposite effect.

Aye, it helped me transition off a 110mg+ oxymorphone nasal habit. I too am clean now. That said, I also smoke a lot less weed then I did years ago as well.
