I remember going to a Juvinile Detention Center when I was 16.. (I'm now 21). And there was this kid I was locked up with ...

he was African American, 14 years old, and was large...Huge pecs, decent arms, and a visable 6 pack....

His pecs were bigger when he was 14 then mine are now (i'm 21 now).

I talked to him a bit... and he said he ate as much food as he could, and did push ups..... No for real, just pushups besides for once a week benching. . .

How the heck was/is this possible? I'm aware african americans can possibly build muscle easier....But this 14 year old kid had steroid-like pecs..... And he said he got them by doing pushups every morning and every night.....

I wanna call BS, but I was around him for 3 months and its true, I actually noticed him get bigger in that 3 months time frame.....

So obviously its possible to get relativly big by pushups....but if your overweight or if your muscle is already hiding behind fat than idk...(skinny people, like myself can probably pack on decent muscle with pushups).

what do u think?

Also,

This guy I go to college with, he's 22...He's also pretty big (when I say big I dont mean bodybuilder status, I mean ripped,6 six pack, large pecs with little body fat.) and he said he used to go to the gym until he realized its a waste of money when he got the same results by doing pushups and crunches.... WTF? I'm starting to open my eyes to pushups now lol .

Also, I've noticed a LOT of people at my current gym walk around like they're all big and tough, when I cant even see there six pack...I'm not all about 6 packs i swear lol, but when you have these guys who can bench more then you and think they're cooler then you I cant help but laugh because some of these guys are just carrying around extra fat...... If you cant see your abs, then you have extra body fat... bottom line...

I at one time couldnt see my abs, so I did tons of cardio for 3 months, after that I got skinny with very low body fat %, then I decided to lift heavy to get rid of that skinny look and to add muscle..

I hate fat people who think they're all muscle.... sometimes I want to just yell "Dude, you cant even see any muscle tone"

Sorry for the rant, had to let some steam off- just got back from the gym and this dude was trying to tell EVERYONE who walked in the gym how to lift weights properly, when he was one of the few who had extra bodyfat..... lol fuckin' people

Yes, doing push ups will build a tremendous amount of muscle, especially if you're not eating and exercising as is. :) I would start doing exercise if you aren't because it's one of the best things to do to preserve your body and mind.

Black people never have to worry about going bald. Black have always had everything ever. Black people are rad.

I don't know, I'd have to see them. Sure, genetics play a factor, but push ups and crunches will only take you so far. Oh, and visible abs are in large part due to low body fat %. You don't need crunches, heck of a lot of people who don't even do ab exercises have nice abs.

Say that to a powerlifter.

Genetics. /endthread

ditto!!
genetics is something inescapable . i soldiered with a guy that never, ever brushed his teeth and had absolutely perfect dental hygiene. me, i work like a donkey to keep my choppers in good order.

decades of heavy physical work and plenty physical sports and nothing spectacular to show for it. small sectioned skeleton leaves little in the way of attach points for muscles to grab onto.

fine with that, it's who i am .

I'm gonna agree with the post about low body fat. I was in gymnastics when I was younger and also coached it when I was an adult. You would be surprised to see the muscles on these girls and they don't do anything but exercises using their own body weight. I know that's totally random and doesn't have much to do with your question, but I'm just saying that if someone is extremely lean and has even a decent amount of muscle they can look REALLY ripped.

yeah I believe it. Here in Manhattan in the parks you'll see dudes - usually black - on the bars all day just ripping dips and pullups and they're fuckin humongo big. These guys can do some pretty wild stuff on a bar

Youtube "Bartendaz Workout" for an example. That shit really goes down in the city

Also look at Herschel Walker. Guy says he never lifted a weight in his life (which I don't believe, but still...). His traps and pecs are ridiculously big right now, according to him he does 1,000 pullups, crunches, dips, pushups a day (wtf???) or something like that and only eats BREAD AND SALAD.

Has that ever been proven?

I'm not trying to counter it, I'm actually curious why black people appear to be better athletes than whites.

It's true. Slave owners would buy the strongest blacks, thus leading to those strong blacks having children with other "stronger" black women, leading to children with better muscle-related genetics. Repeat that a few generations, and you got yourself some good lifting genetics.

^ Wow i never thought of that. Im sure its only one of many factors in the athletic dominance of black people, but still interesting.

Working out with genetics playing a minor role.. people work out a lot when their in detention centers/jail.. kid coulds been there for a year or two, sad but it happens/

Some kids get big easily. Good genetics, plus live in an environment where strength is either a necessity or highly valued. I was a social worker and had kids that could have done some serious damage or kicked my ass hard (I was also stressed out and not eating right at the time but the point still stands). They would never have touched me because they respected me and I respected them and tried to help.

There are all sorts of factors that go into genetics, some ethnicities tend to build better than others. I am an Irish-American and food was a struggle for a long time. We developed fast metabolisms to get the nutrients in us quickly. This obviously has benefits and negatives. Very few people in my family are overweight, nobody is obese.

Also who cares how much a person can bench? I can't lift heavy weights for shit, because of my size and makeup, however I look good now and can put on muscle easily. Thats all that matters too me.

Genetics do play a huge part into it. I've always had genetically large pecs (I'm German/british). I've never had to take roids in order to get my ideal body, because shedding fat was as easy as getting on a strength building routine and going on and off keto.

I bet you part of the illusion of having massive musculature was really just his low body fat.

i've heard that they have more mitochondria in their muscle cells, or a higher proportion of ribosomes or something like that. This extra density causes them to not be very good floaters, which is why a lot of black people don't swim.
