Question: Does adderall eat muscle? I have been taking 10mg for 2 weeks except the weekends and have noticed no weight loss but my arms getting flabbier and stomach aswell. Not a fully decreased appetite, in fact I consume around 1000-1300 calories per day. Some days more.

This is my 3rd time around taking adderall. 1st time I lost 6lbs. 2nd time maybe 4lbs, which came right back on after a huge appetite when I stopped. The IR seemed to help me lose weight more than the XR. I'm on the XR now at 10mg. Also, the "concentration high" only lasts about 20 minutes at most and then I'm pretty much grumpy or regular.

I'm not planning on ever taking adderall for weight loss again. And it doesn't even help me focus any more!

Now I'm worried about the negative effects that it has had on my body/metabolism. I'm not sure, but I am really sensitive to sound especially at nighttime. When I loud unexpected noise happens I get a weird shock in my body that makes me wake up and I think it disturbs my sleep. It feels like anxiety and sensitive to noise. Could this be a side effect of getting little sleep or the adderall?

Adderall does not eat muscle. It doesn't eat anything actually. It can however boost your metabolism and reduce your appetite which may contribute to weight loss. Whether your body burns fat or muscle will depend on your diet, exercise, and many other factors.

This happens to me when I'm tired and I could imagine taking stims would make you jumpy as well. I'm not sure on the mechanism but some sort of adrenaline rush fight or flight response.

Ive tried adderall a handful of times & never got the high everyone else does, but then again, I never snorted them. I also fell asleep an hour after taking it like the 4th or 5th time. It got me tired & I went to sleep. I never got anything but high blood pressure out of adderall & just dont get what everyone else gets out of it so I just quit that shit.

Adderall just doesn't work for most people as far as weight loss goes
They take it as an appetite suppressant, and after it's over, they binge on food because their appetite increases drastically
Adderall only boosts metabolism for a short time, so unless you are part of the minority, you need to loose weight the safe and real way.

The body takes energy in a certain order. I believe it's like this:

Calories
Simple Carbohydrates
Complex Carbohydrates
Fat
Protein

So, in theory, if you cut down on fat, as well as simple and complex carbs, you will be well on your way to building lean muscle mass. And you don't need a drug to do this. Starving yourself with adderall is only going to hurt you in the ned

you get the noise thing when you're tired too? same. I guess it has to do with not getting enough sleep than adderall. Thanks for your observations and responses.

Adderall isnt all that. I want to take wellbutrin for depression, I have some here. is it a good idea to take it seeing as how i have a high tolerance to adderall now? I know they sort of both work the same on the brain..

unless you consult your doctor then i wouldnt advise taking an anti depressant and adderall together. im some people it can cause a huge increase in serotonin causing serotonin syndrome.. which can cause headaches, mental confusion, coma. being jumpy is normal seeing as your taking a stimulant which increases alertness

To answer truthfully, most things that cause your body to slip into a catabolic state burn a little muscle as well to some degree. Your body obviously wants to use adipose tissue fat, but muscle is always a small margin.

The best thing for losing weight to be honest is healthy exercise and a low/no carb diet while still maintaining a normal calorie intake (1700-2200).

Any amphetamine will burn fat, but in order to achieve the results you want, you'd better try using substances like Ephedrine/caffeine/clenbuterol. These are tried and tested to work for fat loss.

Another thing to consider is that adderall also makes you lose quite a bit of water weight. Not meaning to be a wet blanket, but your fat loss could be plateauing because...Well... It's not all fat.

it depends on your body. if you've been starving yourself its gonna eat away at fat and muscle. your stomach is probably flabbier because taking amphetamines stresses the body, and in return it releases the stress hormone cortisol, which is a contributing factor to belly fat. im not sure about your arms, did you work out before you started adderall?

you shouldnt be that worried, you're young and yer body should be able to repair itself:) adderall might make you deficient in magnesium, which could be the reason you have such sensitive hearing. are you experiencing any muscle twitching? lack of sleep is definitley a possibility too

this. the stress and appetite suppression is going to signal your body to into "survival mode". as another poster above suggested, your body goes into a catabolic state where it burns tissue rather than fat, because it wants to prioritize saving fat which is more effective at storing energy. so frankly, adderall is not a good way to lose weight, its all superficial in a way and the moment you stop taking it, you'll binge eat yourself back to where you were. :|

Ah damn you guys are right! I have been eating around 900-1300 calories on adderall though during my time of taking it. Can it still release the stress hormone cortisol even with that? I do get "Stressed" out while taking it..adderal is like an emotional roller coaster some times.
Deficient in magnesium makes sense with the sound. It happens especialy at night time. Like the slightest sound makes me startled and jumpy its so annoying.
Should I try a magnesium supplement or a particular food if this is the case? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just tired of not feeling "right".
Also, this weight gain is really pathetic, working so hard to lost it by eating right and exercising yet I feel like I have the metabolism of a sloth.
NE1 have some helpful tips to fix my body back?

yeah it'll still release it unfortunately. but that'll happen with pretty much any stimulant. the key is to just eat small healthy meals every few hours. this will keep blood sugar levels good and the body wont go into stress mode.

its up to you. if your worried about weight & can afford it id go for a supplement. try magnesium citrate...its only a little more expensive than the oxide form but its worth it... oh and magnesium lowers cortisol levels so its a win/win supplement:D

it'll go back to normal after a week or 2 dont worry:)

I appreciate the honest responses. Its been almost 2 weeks since Adderall. Still mad flabby in the arms and stomach and have been working out and not eating junk...yet no progress. I'll buy magnesium tomorrow. I didnt realize that helps with the stress hormone cortisol. Do I need to take anything W/ magnesium to help it absorb? Calcium maybe? I have been super stressed for NO reason at all. I'm living it up on vacation right now but I'm really anxious and not the brightest lately..
I'm not sure why. Because of this I tried Wellbutrin for 5 days and I felt AMAZING but then my hair started falling out and I noticed weight gain. (i'm a lil obsessed about gaining more weight cuz i worked SUPER freaking hard to lose it before and now its all back after 2 years) So I stopped using it :(
Now I'm just trying to not take drugz and for the depression Tryptaphan at night (1500) ... i guess thats sort of a "drug"/supplement but I feel like I need SOMETHING cuz not getting any sleep and this healthy diet doesnt seem to be doing anything. Working out feels great, but I'm def seeing Zero results . . . it sux to be releasing all this energy into something that isnt showing any results, but I'm dedicated to keep trying until I see what I want within my behavior, body, emotions/ LIFE.
I know that there are more things to LIFE besides supplements and vitamins and antidepressants ..dont get me wrong.

Thanks for listening.

You prob didn't feel the ~HIGH~ because you truly have ADD. Thats how the drug is suppose to work if you are a legit user.

ahah i know how you feel about the weight gain, its stressssing.

as for the tryptophan, take it in the morning and see if it works. because you need to give the tryptophan time to convert into serotonin. once it is converted, the serotonin will convert into melatonin and help you sleep better:) if that doesnt work maybe look into some 5HTP, i think its cheaper than trypta too.

dont expect instant results when it comes to body fat. just do some resistance training to build muscle and eat some protein. muscle burns body fat

thanks for posting the stuff that i put in bold, lately ive been letting supplements like take over my life, i have a huge freakin shoebox full of vitamins n shit which IMO have made my complexion/body comp worse :! im just gonna stick with vitaminC pills because it has so many benefits, and ill try burdock root for acne.

I have a big shelf full of supplements too and it always freaks my friends out they think I'm a total weirdo. But I don't care what they think. I just feel like I'M THE ONLY 1 WHO NEEDS all this stuff while everyone else lives happily and gets fucked up and has no side effects or needs supplements except for maybe like 2.
My complexion seems the same, how do you think the supplements made your body comp worse? How so? Vitamin C pills why? Vitamin C seems the ultimate easiest to get from foods naturally, why would you need that as a supplement? Maybe I'm naive now.

Also, you really think Tryptaphan in the AM? It makes me sleepy (well when I take 3 like it recommends on the bottle for sleep) . I hear 5HTP and Tryp should never be combined together or near each other. Its either 1 or the other.
I don't want my body comp to get messed up.

If you aren't eating and exercising, your body will shed muscle and then fat in that order. Losing weight with amphetamines and not eating properly or exercising properly will always lead to adding the weight on again at a later date and time, after you have royally screwed your metabolism up.

It's why anorexic people will often gain a lot of weight later in life - their bout of anorexia ruins their metabolism and yields obesity later in life, ironically.

during adderall i always ate at at LEAST 1200 calories / day. I didnt lose appetite on adderall completely only mildly but knew about that fact ^

The fact that your hair is falling out indicates that you need to seriously re-evaluate your diet. You need to be getting protein, quality protein, and a lot of it. What are your calories coming from?

Since this thread is really about weight loss and less about adderall now, I'm going to move it over to HT. Its at their mods discretion whether to close/move/merge it.

Considering that the OP has already posted their other questions (about magnesium at least) elsewhere, I'm going to go ahead and close this. I highly suggest, OP, that you use the search engine in Healthy Living as many of your questions are answered/discussed in threads already. :)
