Buying cough syrup online

I"ve noticed the shortage of 200ml Robo DX. Chem chick tried to sell me Bisolvon dry instead. I quickly glanced at the label, it was true that it contained only DX, but as I've never used it I decided I wanted to stay with tried and trusted DX.

Funny, you would've posted this at about the same time I was at yet another pharmacy, this time looking at the other brands because Robitussin was predictably absent. I spotted the Bisolvon, but didn't recognise the inactive ingredients, and the label said it could cause diarhea, so I decided a four-hour trip to the bathroom wasn't for me. Also, there's less DXM in it than in Robitussin, so I passed.

Grugz I've seen it in supermarkets too man, unfortunately it's only ever 300mg, and never Dry Cough Forte.

I bought a bottle of Bisolvon Dry to check it out. For reference, here's the text from the side of the box, followed by the ingredients (from the included leaflet):

"Contains methyl hydroxybenzoate and saccharin sodium. The maximum daily dose of 60ml contains at least 18g of maltitol and up to 6g of sorbitol. Products containing maltitol and sorbitol may have a laxative effect or cause diarrhoea".

Each 5ml of Bisolvon Dry contains:
  • dextromethorphan hydrobromide 10mg
  • methyl hydroxybenzoate
  • saccharin sodium
  • maltitol solution
  • propylene glycol
  • vanilla aroma 33P080
  • apricot aroma 653460
  • purified water

The sorbitol referenced above is part of the "maltitol solution". Given the above, I think I'll give it a miss.

Also found out today Wyeth (makers of Robitussin) were fully acquired by Pfizer early 2009.

For comparison, here's Robitussin's Dry Cough Forte ingredients list

Each 10mL of oral liquid contains:
  • Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 30mg
  • Sodium benzoate
  • Saccharin sodium
  • Glucose (from wheat)
  • Fructose
  • Maltose
  • Alcohol (1.5% v/v)

Asked about the 'missing' Dry Cough Forte and the pharmacist looked up a product list and it was still listed, but it just seemed they were no longer carrying that particular version of it.

Spoke to a different pharmacist elsewhere and he said it was taking longer to get in than they thought, but it should be in 'end of May'. It seems just an unusual case of supply/demand.

Thanks for the research. I'm hoping it does indeed end up back on shelves soon. Bisolvon sounds like a ba-a-ad idea, I don't recommend anyone try that.

update on this - Just bought a big bottle of robo dry forte at local chemist here in SA with no troubles :)

and they had plenty of stock on the shelf too

i think this thread has ran it's course now.

bottom line is it's available online as well as chemists. there's not much point in discussing which pharmacies are out of stock and which aren't; there's no harm reduction involved:)
