Oxi - crack by another name?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but cocaine paste mixed with lime and extracted with a nonpolar solvent is just purer crack after the solvent evaporates.

the article says limestone, not lime. "Oxi" as described sounds like freebase cut with a ton of chalk (hence the cheapness)

at least it's not jenkem

or there's some chemistry there that I'm not immediately grasping. Crack is cocaine carbonate and limestone is calcium carbonate. Someone wanna try to figure this out (just cuz it's kinda interesting)?

Just like sodium bicarbonate is used to convert coke to crack, so too can calcium (mono)carbonate be to do the same.

The principle here is that treating the mildly acidic cocaine hydrochloride with a base neutralises it to give the "free base", and in this case, carbon dioxide, water and calcium chloride.

Crack is freebase cocaine, not cocaine carbonate. It's most typically produced by reacting cocaine hydrochloride with sodium bicorbonate though.

hence the need for acetone/gasoline cuz chalk is insoluble in water

(quick note: the "bi" in bicarbonate doesn't mean two)

Nothing new. We've had a couple of articles in here about similar products in SA. Basically they tend to be cocaine paste made for smoking. Cheaper than the real thing.

This new oxi thing is just another form of cocaine freebase as far as I'm concerned, with a slightly different composition. This one leaves an amber oily residue after being vaporized (I'm guessing crack doesn't). According to the media it has the amazing features of both being much more potent AND containing a lot more hazardous impurities like kerosene, sulfuric acid, whatever.

It's still cocaine though and would still be an obscure form of cocaine if the brazilian media hadn't suddenly started to talk about it every couple of days.

Funny thing, the media announced oxi as a cheap potent crack substitute that was getting into the country. Several days later, some of it was seized in a large brazilian city "for the first time" but was being sold at a high price because, according to the dealer, the demand was very high. lol
And so a drug that was restricted to the amazonian border is finding its way into the big markets...

Oxi: Twice as powerful as crack cocaine at just a fraction of the price

The snakes come at night, darting out of the shadows and into Marcelo's subconscious. "You start thinking, 'There are people coming! The police are coming! A snake is coming! Everything is coming!' You panic. But there is no snake. No police. There's nobody there. There's nothing. You're just tripping out."

Marcelo is an illiterate 24-year-old drug addict whose home is a sliver of cardboard on the streets of Rio Branco, a riverside city in the Brazilian Amazon. His drug of choice is oxi, a highly addictive and hallucinogenic blend of cocaine paste, gasoline, kerosene and quicklime (calcium oxide) that is wreaking havoc across the Amazon region.

Oxi, or oxidado – "rust" – is the latest drug to surface in the Amazon. It is reputedly twice as powerful as crack cocaine and just a fifth of the price.

"It is terrifying," said Alvaro Mendes, an outreach worker in Rio Branco from the state of Acre's Harm Reduction Association, the NGO that first detected the drug. "The majority of first-time users become addicted on their first contact with the drug. Most of them go seven to 10 days without sleeping, without eating. They start to go into a process of degeneration. After months of use … they go into a state where they look like zombies, wandering … in search of pleasure."

Described as a cheaper and deadlier successor to crack, oxi sells for about R$2 (75p) a rock and is smoked in pipes improvised from cans, pieces of piping and metal taps. According to Mendes, whose support group works with slum-dwellers, prostitutes, transvestites and homeless people who are hooked on the drug, oxi can kill within a year.

Oh, the drama!

The majority of first-time users suddenly find themselves on a major binge!

Their wandering in search of pleasure is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than people in suits and ties going bar-hopping at night. Because these people are like ZOMBIES, do you hear? Not like people, but zombies. Be clear on that fact. After all, they don't sleep for months, or even years or centuries! Kind of like Rip Van Winkle, but backwards.

Anyone planning a strategy of de-humanizing people who make different lifestyle choices, or turn to different chemicals in order to survive, or are of a lower socioeconomic class? Anyone want to spread some lies and rumors about the DEVIL'S drug?

Not that I am disregarding the horrible effects of highly addictive stimulants, or how they can wreck havoc in poor communities (and elsewhere, into middle-class areas and upper-class lives).

But spreading poison lies like this is no way to alleviate the problem.
It only adds to it, with middle-class sheep starting a witchhunt for users, and being willing to punish them and treat them horribly.

Ya gotsta de-humanize 'em first, before ya can start throwing them in jail or just shooting them outright (like they do in Brazil) in order to clean the streets, so you can go shopping for Armani suits in peace, without some dirty dog begging you for spare change.

^^This is what I am wondering. As previously stated, gasoline and kerosene are already used in the production of cocaine. I'm pretty sure that the chemical change provided by quicklime (raise the pH) is the same as baking soda normally used when making crack (someone please correct me if I am wrong). The description of the final product as "rock" seems to support this idea. Sounds like more drug war propaganda to me.

I merged the two current threads about this.

You don't say?! Here's an article we have from 2005: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=202493&

And I think there might be a few more that don't actually call it oxi.

;)
