Some background dribbling follows skip it to the main post if you just wanna read and/or give up about gadgets!
I've decided to make this thread as I'm in the dire need of something new, winter coming around the corner, it's already cold as fuck for me, ever since I suffered the nerve damage, I FEEL the cold. Eg. I used to wear shorts + t-shirt in anything 17ish+. NEVER turned the heater on at home any day until friends complained about house being too cold. Now heater comes on 12-14ish+ and Im fully clothed. (plus we dry LOTS of clothes for our 19 month old + her 'modern cloth nappies', re-usable AWESOME nappies, better to use than disposable! these days).. So.. Cold weather coming, my wife who is 11 days away due to give birth uses my EEEPC 10" netbook LOTS, she gets tired lots so I let her use it heaps, I sometimes use one of my desktop PCs (like now) as our daughter is at daycare 1 day a week. But when both of us aren't free, I usually hang out with Cassie and/or watching her play around during the day so I hardly get time on the PC.
Now for the main stuff
I wanted to make a electronic gadget thread (only) for info/prices/help/etc due to needing an extra one ASAP. From research I've decided on an EEE transformer. Seems the best thing around, tablet, has a dockable charge + keyboard plus CHEAP considering the stuff it's comparable to functions wise. I hope pricing for this stuff isn't against rules since it's not drug related?
So, it's about $650AUD for tablet, keyboard + dock to import to Aus as it's not in Aus *YET*. The worldwide demand for it since it's AWESOME value has led to a worldwide shortage and most (all?) places I've looked at from threads that highlight where to buy them from have out of stock, ETA early-mid June... *OUCH* So, I'm trying to either bite my fingers and hold out for a month'ish for this awesome device or get something asap and spend (a lot) more $$$ for a device for similar features.
The main things comparing to it from my somewhat limited research (father, chronic pain, pregnant wife, heaps of other stuff going on) limits the time of late I can do GOOD research but I think the main things are motorola xoom, samsung galaxy 10.1 tablet (not the 10.1v - the vodafone/aussie one? Seems it's got no SD card slot etc) and not much else. Ipad2 is 'nice' but I want something I can call great and the pricing to me means it'll never be great (for features vs value. Plus some pages I frequent are flash only, NFI how ipad(2) handles it?)
Does anyone have ideas/help to give and/or in a similar boat? What are your experiences of late with either having an internet (either wifi and/or 3G) enabled mobile device such as a tablet and for me, not so much a lappy/netbook since with my injury, a tablet would be easier for me to browse web and use the dockable keyboard WHEN I want to type out (big) stuff.
As always, if this post is hard to read, sorry, it's COLD here today means pain is somewhat worse and brain is BLEH. Haven't had a piracetam dose today, will do later as I warm up and want brain kick start for today's errands, HEAPS as usual after lunch until we pick up our daughter from daycare ~5 PM.
I'm about to watch a video of EEE transformer vs ipad2, so I don't know this person's experience and/or who the winner is but for me $$$ wise, it's the transformer. But as said before, I don't know if I can wait the month for it as the baby is due in 11 days, we'll both wanna use mobile devices on the couch whilst we watch our newborn and daughter together in front of the nice warm gas heated loungeroom
No heating in the PC room/spare bedroom so I won't be in here too much when it gets REALLY cold down here in Geelong!
Cheers for anyone contributing to here, HOPE this gives me and others some great advice/help, as said, my chronic pain impaired brain (especially in cold) sees that I'm not too good on research this days, some people should remember the days (pre 2005) that I actually HAD a brain, not so much of one at present, BEEPIN pain, not a friend for me heh.
Enjoy! Anyone actually have an EEE transformer or ordered one and/or done research on it? Thoughts/suggestions most welcome on ANY mobile device. I prefer to spend 'less' but if I have to spend up to $1K, I will I guess (Yearly interest from investments mature today, it's not HEAPS but it's enough we can buy a few things before it disappears
)
