cassius clay (mohamed ali) has finally been bested and by a guy that is a senator in the fills.
anyone dispute this ? I am truly curious as to why.

Manny is a great fighter and is definitely one of the top boxers of all time. Tough to declare he is better than Ali though. They are two different fighters from two different eras.

He was a boxer before he was elected as a House Rep but I'm not sure how that is even relevant to the discussion of his boxing prowess.

He is a great human being full stop but until he fights Mayweather there will always be the question of who is the better fighter. Time is against this happening while both fighters are in their prime I'm afraid.

At present for all round athleticism my money would be on All Black captain Richie McCaw. He is far and away the most dominant player in world rugby highlighted by the fact that when he is in any team their winning percentage is a shade off 90%. He is the worlds premier flanker, a postion that is the coal face of not only defence but attack. He is so good that they have several times tried to change the ruck rules to negate his dominance and each time he has be able to adapt and still be unstoppable.

Although very early in his rugby uninion career, Sonny Bill Williams is close to the ideal physical athlete in world sport. He is big, fast, fearless and with silky hand skills that would put most of the NBA to shame. He is still adapting to the subtleties of the game after growing up playing league but in only a year he has pretty much cemented himself in the All Blacks starting lineup. Add to this his blossoming professional boxing career although he has yet to fight any one of note (I'm sure oput of fear of getting injured before the World Cup). He might lack the technique of proven fighters but I'm sure he would have the ability to make his mark if he ever decided to concentrate on that solely. Mark my word he will be close to the best player in this years World Cup.

dude, let's be real. Manny can nowhere near be considered Ali-status unless he fights the competition that he should have fought a long, long time ago

He is an eight-division world champion, the first boxer in history to win ten world titles, the first to win in eight weight divisions,
and the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes, then you must allow his career in politics in the role as a senator who stands firmly in the court of the common man.
the man started his streak in light fly weight and has dominated up to the light middle weight division ( where i got my clock cleaned).
the heavies are one of the ultimate spectacles to witness and i don't know a thing about rugger but manny p. wears too many hats well to be considered less than a champion in both the civil and the political arenas.

Manny is definitely a tremendous athlete and has fought and has won against many big names in his career but I feel like the media is blowing him out of proportion a bit. He's been used to get more and more people into boxing because it's unfortunately a dying sport. It's like what they're doing now with Blake Griffin. (That whole Dunk contest was RIGGED!)

I will say this, his matches are almost always exciting and I'd love to see him fight Mayweather. And his personality makes it impossible to hate on him. :P

As for the best boxer or even best current boxer, I don't think so.

Also it's way too far a jump to try to determine the best athlete alive since you're combining all types of sports and events.

Manny is a great boxer for sure but I wouldnt say best overall athlete. Anderson Silva comes to mind for me. I mean dude has multiple black belts trains everyday in ways most athletes never even try. And with Manny and Silva both have pretty much emptied there weightclasses in terms of competition I would love to see them both try and go up a weight class. Also you cant count out Adrian Peterson or Lebron James when talking about CURRENT athletes.

What a clinic Manny put on tonight against Mosley.. Only one left is Mayweather.. hopefully that little bitch will stop ducking and hiding from Pacquoa one day and well all get the dream fight weve been waiting for..

The sport really needs that fight for people to start to give a damn about it again.. The rise of MMA is really putting a dent in boxing.

No, he absolutely would not. Other than it being ridiculous hyperbole, they (rugby & basketball) are completely different sports and require different skill sets. But I will look for his name in a future NBA draft. ;)

Surely that would make him a supreme athlete if he possessed skills to play more than one sport? Which current NBA player do you think could fight professionally in the heavyweight division?

The man is a freak, he has hands that allow him to grip the ball like it's a marble and can dish it with 2 or three defenders hanging off him. What he does in attack he more than matches in defence.

more and more, in my view, a superlative athlete is defined by more than excelling at sport.
just as A4Anxiety remarked about paquiao showing how it's done to mosley, his life outside of the ring is what ''role model'' can be defined as.

plus his wife is a 10 and just as much as social activist as he. the guy is a full time senator! When does he find time to sleep?

To me a great athlete is defined by being physically exceptional in all areas related to sports. People that excel at certain sports may be good at what they do, but no way would i ever consider the worlds best bowler on par with even the worst professional rugby or football player.

Great atheletes are people that are naturally gifted with speed/strength/agility/durability/endurance ect and work hard to be in top physical shape for what they do.

For instance i would consider Vernon Davis and Adrian Peterson to be much better athletes than Pacquiao because they are more well rounded atheletes.

Could you compare any of those players to someone like Deion Sanders? Not only did he play both baseball and American football he also played both in offense and defense. Come to me when Peterson makes a tackle. hell I'd give him extra points if he knows how to sail ;)

I see the supreme athletes to be those who excell at a range of skills, not just being physically imposing. Plenty of strong, fast athletes out there could not catch a ball or make a tackle to save themselves.

^ very true, the mental aspect of sports are a huge part of what makes some people naturally gifted.

LOts of professional atheletes switched between sports in HS and college, and even throughout their pro career. Oh and Vernon Davis does competitive curling, and im not talking about the gym, im talking with rocks and brooms on ice curling.

ok he's not sculpted, but in terms of physical power and explosiveness, he is unparalleled in human history. Unparalleled in human history.

213 kg snatch

263.5 kg clean and jerk

Look:

While I agree he is an impressive athlete there is more to being "the greatest athelete alive" than pure explosive power. He doesnt look like he has done cardio ever.

Insane wheels on that guy though.

i can't get my head wrapped around the way the bar is bent. he is holding it out near the wheels and i don't get the physics of it.

i can't get my head wrapped around the way the bar is bent. he is holding it out near the wheels and i don't get the physics of it.

when executing the jerk, the elbows need to lock out for the lift to be valid. This locking out exerts not only upward force on the bar, but outward force as well. The portion of the bar between the hands is being stretched out.

Imagine also how much more difficult the lift would be if the bar were perfectly rigid. For the clean portion, the flexibility of the bar allows you to gain leverage on it before the entire weight leaves the floor. A perfectly rigid bar would not afford this advantage. The same applies to the jerk portion: when the elbows lock out, the weight is still on its way up. Much of the final effort is actually exerted by the abs and lower back, which have to establish balance and stability as the undulating bar settles above the shoulders.

^^^thanks-now somewhat less in the dark . his skeleton has got to be extraordinary to support and hang that much muscle, tendon and sinew on it.

hossien's grocery bill would be budget blowing.
