Ecstasy loses its shine in Australia and worldwide; but newer synthetic drugs are cause for concern.

Ecstasy, one of the most popular “recreational” drugs in Australia over the past two decades is becoming less popular with regular users, consistent with global trends, say the authors of a new report from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of NSW.

The bulletin from the Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS) – Australia’s largest central monitoring system of the use of ecstasy and related drugs – found the number of ecstasy users nominating it as their drug of choice had fallen significantly since 2005 and the number using the drug weekly had halved.

Chief investigator of the EDRS, Dr Lucy Burns, says that while the declining use of ecstasy was welcome, Australia, like Europe, is already seeing the emergence of an increasingly diverse range of synthetic chemicals.

“We have not to date seen any evidence of widespread use in Australia of these newer synthetic drugs, many of which are available on the internet,” says Dr Burns.

“However the sheer rate at which these and other chemicals could be synthesised and distributed presents significant challenges from a health perspective and a law enforcement perspective.”

Designer drugs which have been picked up by the survey, albeit in small numbers, include mephedrone and BZP, a central nervous system stimulant which reportedly has more side effects than amphetamines.

Call me old fashioned, but I have yet to try anything that beats the awesomeness of MDMA. :) Although, I haven't tried mephedrone yet (and I probably won't try it for a while considering that's it's banned almost everywhere in Europe/EU).

Dude, it quite aggravates me knowing that by the time I have kids of an inquisitive, acceptable, drug-using age that MDMA might well be out of reasonable reach for them (due to market dilution and the economic effect of production when comparing RC's vs. MDMA). That isn't to say it will have disappeared, but short of being in on a good chain of knowing somebody who knows somebody, it won't be easy to find.

Mephedrone is the second most euphoric drug in my book after MDMA.

It is a magical substance though and it will always be available to those willing to look for it. It might also make a comeback after the current generation of RC's are banned. A large part of their popularity is due to their legality and high purity (directly related to the legality).

As far as this study though, I do think it is good the number of people doing MDMA weekly has halved.

Moderation people.

^ a decline in supply or a decline in demand? It seems easy enough to get real mdma. But personally I'm more likely to go out dancing on mephedrone than mdma, mdma is better for chilling at home than raving IME.

Some RCs, and especially some RC combos, can be extremely close to a real MDMA experience. Depending on what you like, they can be even better. I love MDMA, but being able to get pure RCs for cheap is a nice convenience.

it is a global trend not just the aussies

Actually that's not true, if your read the UN 2010 drug report on stims + MDMA, MDMA is starting to become big in countries like Chine where you people are starting to get more disposable income and are starting to hit up clubs, EDM events and so on.

I definitely agree with what other posters have been saying. Absolutely nothing beats pure molly. The euphoria is indescribably incredible. Words do it no justice at all. It's the only drug that I have no regrets whatsoever about using because - for me - it always felt so therapeutic (in contrast to blow or speed). I miss it so much (it's become very hard to find around here for me)... Ah the good old days.

MDMA was/sorta is an RC itself. Also, why would it be, in the subjective experience of individual people, better then other closely related substituted amphetamines/cathinones/PEA derived molecules that act though a similar or identical mechanism (force release of neurotransmitter by binding to transport protein, into vesicle, lower PH, displace endogenous ligand...how most amphetamine and cathinones work with varying plays regarding how much DA vs NE vs 5HT are released as the major difference) But yeah, kind of broad to say MDMethA will for everyone, be better then MDProplyA or MDbenzylA would for someone else, no?
