I was wondering if anyone here has had experience couchsurfing before? I'll be travelling to South America and wanted to go to Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Sadly, these countries are pretty expensive. So I was thinking of couchsurfing with some locals to save money and get in touch with the local culture.

Has anyone here done couch surfing whilst travelling? Or hosted travellers at their home? If you've done it, what was the experience like? Any pros or cons? How about safety?

Feel free to offer any advice or comments about travelling in south america too:)

I haven't personally but I've read about it a bit and people always say to make sure you're really polite, help out with housework and make sure you spend plenty of time outside the house. Have fun :)

Oh and try and track down the video about Juilian Assange staying at the home of someone from The Daily Show and being a very bad guest. It's hilarious.

I couchsurfed across europe on 2 separate occasions over 8 months each. Met some fantastic amazing and often unique people.

No doubt you will find english speaking hosts so it's not a necessity to speak spanish.

I also hosted a few people but as I live far out from the city it's not very convenient for tourists :D

Give it a go.
