Vicodin and Motrin (first time hydrocodone dose)

Hi all, I got my wisdom teeth removed today and I got a script for Vicodin (5/500mg Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen) and Motrin (600mg Ibuprofin). My doc told me to take 4 Motrin daily/1 per hour, and to save the Hydrocodone for if I need it. I'm not particularly fond of pill abuse, and I know the risk of addiction and the possible damage from the acetaminophen and Ibuprofin, but I figure I might as well enjoy this luxury since I can't smoke. I'm curious what would be a good starter dosage for someone with no tolerance/experience with opiates and also if there is any risk in taking 2400mg Ibuprofin with X amount of Acetaminophen.

With no experience or tolerance to opiates I would say 10mg of hydrocodone would be a good start... wait and see how you feel and if you need more, which I doubt you would, try another 5-10mg.

With all the acetaminophen from the vicodin I doubt you would need that much ibuprofin. And I don't think there's too much risk mixing APAP and ibuprofin anyway.

you wouldn't need to add the ibuprofin

a good starting dose IMO is more along the lines of 15-20 mgs to get some decent effects off the hydro, adding 5-10 mgs if you need to re-dose

I know I probably won't need much of the Motrin, but I'm more worried about any risks. I know Acetaminophen and Ibuprofin can be combined relatively safely, but I haven't seen any mention of amounts in of this caliber (1200 [how much I've taken so far]-2400 Ibuprofin and 1000-3000 mg Acetaminophen). Thanks for the dosage recommendation, 10-25mg seems to be the usually stated amount.

Three or four Vicodin would be safe on their own. I would refrain from taking much ibuprofen that day but even with it complications would be unlikely. Saving the hydrocodone until you are no longer in pain would be the best harm reduction advice as if you do get nauseous puking with stitches and open wounds in your mouth and a sore swollen jaw would not be pleasant.

The ibuprofen will add pain killing effects to the Vicodin, but will do absolutely nothing to increase the recreational value.

Saving the hydrocodone until you are no longer in pain would be the best harm reduction advice as if you do get nauseous puking with stitches and open wounds in your mouth and a sore swollen jaw would not be pleasant.

I can personally back this up, puking right after oral surgery is an extremely unpleasant experience.

Plus for me at least, taking the hydrocodone when in pain will just make you feel closer to "normal" and not necessarily "good"...

I'd recommend 15 mg hydrocodone (3 Vicodin) for your first time for recreational value. There is little risk in mixing APAP and ibuprofen, but your stomach might become somewhat "upset" because of this, and there might be nausea due to the hydrocodone. If you experience nausea, lie down, and it should subside greatly.

For pain, ibuprofen is good, and so is hydrocodone, but APAP doesn't do much for me. If you want to manage the pain you don't need 15 mg hydrocodone, I doubt you even NEED it at all for the pain, ibuprofen works wonders, but the Vicodin will definitely help with the pain.

Ibuprofen is metabolized through your kidney not your liver.

Hydrocodone/ and the Acetaminophen (APAP) is metabolized primarily by your liver.

In addition each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, starch, croscarmellose sodium, dibasic calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and stearic acid (Usually)

Furthermore, you 3-4 600mg dosage of Ibuprofen seems like a stretch try not to do that. Even if the bottle says 1-2 every 6 hours. Take when needed you will get nothing out of ibuprofen. This is why your prescribed Ibuprofen instead of Tylenol for extra pain relief. (two different body metabolic process's)

Even though APAP and ibuprofen end up in different places, they both still go through the stomach, and can both cause stomach upset.

Ibuprofen may provide better relief for pain than some people, but Tylenol/APAP works better for other people. This is why hydrocodone combination products exist with both hydrocodone + APAP or hydrocodone + ibuprofen.

^ true true Ibuprofen is just awful for your tummy. In all those three are horrible for the tummy in combination lol. Oh Well Vicodin/ Percoet /endocet any APAP are probably one of the worst opiates just because of the APAP. Furthermore, if your going to abuse the codeine atleast get pure oxycdone lol .

I'm going by what my dentist said, he told me to do 4 per day, once an hour. The pain isn't so bad today, and I haven't taken any Ibuprofen, but I'm glad to hear it's relatively safe to combine them, I was just unsure.

I have another question though. I took 4 of my vicodin today, and I've got really bad itching. I hear an antihistamine clears it up, and I've got some Clarinex (desloratadine 5mg). Will taking one of these help?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm trying to be careful as I'll likely never do these again and I don't want to mess up my organs (TBH I'm more worried about the over the counter drugs than I am the hydrocodone, funny how that works).

Desloratadine should work just fine to knock down the hydrocodone itches.

If that doesn't work, you can try an older (sedating) antihistamine such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine). That combination is safe as well.

Thanks for the quick reply, just downed one, hope it kills the itching fast.

One last question: What will it take to get addicted/withdrawals and if I am what will I experience or how long will it last? I have 16 pills left, and I'll probably end up taking them all over the next few days. Should that be an issue? How about the acetaminophen? Will a couple thousand mg's for a few days in a row be an issue?
