This Bud's For You, Stealing Marijuana Costs Cop His Job

How about everyone who doesn't believe in police-protection, and is all about anarchy, just openly post their ID/info? I mean, who gives a shit, not scared of lawlessness are you? You'd defend your turf ;P

How is posting our info online even remotely related to anarchism?

Anarchism is not the same as a lawless society, you really need to read up on anarchism. Not even close. If anything, I'd call extreme capitalism and fascism as being closer to lawless societies because in those societies the police tend to only enforce laws when it benefits the institutions they protect, and they have a lot of leeway when it comes to doing whatever the fuck they want, as long as they're only doing it to poor people. Kinda like America except that there are still some rules about what the police can and can't do.

Still, there are several cops serving on the police force in my city that have literally shot unarmed people dead, had their badge revoked (no charges pressed, of course), and then been reinstated 6 months later. I've known plenty of people who've gotten beaten up by cops in the US, and a few that have had drugs planted on them. If you act in a way they don't like they can charge you with one of the numerous offenses made up to make it easier for the cops to lock people away (interfering with an officer in the line of duty, disobeying a lawful command, resisting arrest without violence, I'm sure you know what I mean).

There are a lot of ways of still having effective laws without having an organization like the police in America.

^The police are government sanctioned kidnappers in my eyes, they take people and lock them up in cages against their will for years on end. I have many friends and family members that are or have been in jail. I hate the institution that put them there just like I'd hate a kidnapper for holding those same people in their basement because he had judged them to be wrong.

I don't even neccesarily hate every individual cop as a person, I do however believe that becoming a police officer makes you a bad person due to the nature of the job, and I hate the institution of police.

I never even hinted at thinking that society should be completely without any rules, I just hate the police because I think they do a lot more harm then good.

Go read some Chomsky, Goldman, Proudhon or Kropotkin and try again because that's not anarchism, if anything it's an incredibly oversimplified version of pop-culture anarchism. I've never met an anarchist that didn't believe in rules and holding people accountable for their actions.

Anarchists don't just think we should get rid of all of society's institutions and call it a day, that's clearly stupid. Anarchists believe in changing society to a place in which we don't need police, having a world without hierarchy. That's what anarchism means- lack of hierarchy. There are many ideas on how to do this, from Anarcho-syndicalism to anarcho-capitalism, anarcho-capitalism being the only one that even comes close to fitting what people in this thread are ignorantly calling anarchy.

I never said dangerous people shouldn't be apprehended, I never said people shouldn't be rehabilitated after they commit a crime that requires rehabilitation, I said they shouldn't be punished. There's a pretty clear difference.

I don't think it's moral to lock people in cages because they did something I disagree with. If someone poses a threat to society they should be rehabilitated, not punished, punishing people for crimes is stupid and does absolutely nothing to make the world a better place, it just hurts more people.

I think the goal of the criminal justice system should be to lessen crime. If you punish people for committing crimes while ignoring the reason people commit the vast majority of those crimes (the income gap and class division), then you are increasing crime. When someone robs a house because they need to feed their family, are they doing something wrong? Of course. But what happens when we take that person away from their family and take away any means they have to support that family? Do you think that deters their family members from committing crimes? When that person gets out of prison and has a felony that keeps them from employment on their record, and all their assets are gone, what do you think they're going to do- commit more crime or be homeless?

The idea of punishing people for crimes is pointless, expensive, childish and mean. We should rehabilitate people and help them get out of situations in which they need crime to survive. Only then will the police have a true purpose in society. As it is the police mainly protect the wealthy and fuck up the poor community while raising crime levels. That strikes me as counter to what the goals of the justice system should be.

I..I don't even know where to begin - there's so much wrong with your post that your ideas have about *zero* place in the real world. I'm not gonna go read authors' you shout at me online lol, but I would love to hear your theories on how to keep people from doing bad w/o punishments. In particular, I'm curious about your idea of "rehabilitate people and help them get out of situations in which they need crime to survive", that one's fascinating in a context w/o law enforcement, please do tell.
Got a whole lotta unrealistically idealistic ideas, I'd really be interested in how to enact them from your viewpoint, and don't think I need to go read to understand you ;)

I specifically said that people who commit certain crimes should be apprehended. At least read the wikipedia pages about anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism, because you really are completely fabricating political philosophy and passing it off as anarchism. People often seem to only understand anarchism in terms of teenage angst and the sex pistols, mindless chaos and lawlessness, but that's not even close to what real anarchism is.

I never said there shouldn't be laws, and I think if there are laws there have to be people to enforce them. When I talk about the police I'm specifically referring to the American police, I have no experience and little knowledge of other police forces. I just don't think that punishment is the way to go about it. How does punishing criminals help?

I think if you give people real education, job training for people who've committed crimes and programs to help them integrate into lawful society (good programs), tied with programs to lessen the income gap and redistribute wealth to remove incentive for crime, then you would be at least making a start at removing the situations that make people do crime. No one except psychopaths would rob pawn shops if they had a solid job, training for that job and enough money to survive on without work for a few months, safety nets to keep people from resorting to crime. Very few people commit crimes for fun, almost everyone does it because it's the only way they can get by. If other avenues were given to them, and they had security in terms of income, shelter, utilities and food, I think we'd see crime rates plummet. Especially if things that shouldn't be crimes, like prostitution and drug sale/use, were legalized. It would benifit society much more then this stupid "punish people we don't like" mentality that has landed America with the world's largest prison population, and our revolving door prison policy doesn't help, seeing as most people who are locked up once end up right back in prison. If the people who did crimes were given a basis for entering the legitimate economy, I don't think they'd continue committing crimes for the most part. It's very hard to make any decent amount of money in the underground economy, if people could leave that world and make more money in a world with less risks, most of them would.

You keep saying that you don't know where to start and then you proceed to make pretty much no counter arguments.

please don't post again until you've wiki'd anarchism.

I did (after) posting, I was definitely seeing the "SLCpunk" view of anarchism - didn't seem right to edit/pull posts after the fact ;P
/given the introduction on WIKI, apparently I can be anarchist in some respects since I'm libertarian-leaning. Gotta say the prospect of researching that is about as appealing to me as astrology or homeopathy :\ Am interested in hearing the views on how this is actually implemented though, in the more "common" view of anarchy.

I have no sympathy for him. Whether its one bud, or several pounds, its bad that someone in law enforcement steals these drugs whereas the person on the street is criminalised.

Harsh as it sounds, but I think that losing his career over this is fair, especially given that many people who are arrested and charged with possession of marijuana lose their careers as a result.

Exactly...he should really get in trouble considering how hypocritical this is and how well he was meant to understand and execute the law. as shitty as laws can be, that was his job.

my boyfriend has lived in Orlando, FL his whole life (specifically the winter park area) and has some funny stories about screwey cops. one time when he was about 15, he says he was with some friends in a car smoking bud, and a cop drove up, came up to the car wearing tiny bike shorts and a vest, and the first 2 questions he asked all the guys were, "are you gay? got any gay porn in there?" another cop found his weed when he was with some friends, took only HALF the weed and their pipe, and let them keep the other half of the weed. so yeah florida is fucked.
