Detroit mother Maryanne Godboldo faces multiple felony charges and is being held on $500,000 bond after a 10-hour standoff with a heavily armed police SWAT team. Godboldo was protecting her 13-year-old daughter from unnecessary medication ordered by the state.

Godboldo’s daughter was born with a defective foot that required amputation of her leg below the knee, which led to Maryanne becoming a stay-at-home mother after her birth, according to Health Impact News Daily.

Despite her handicap, the child swam, sang, danced and played the piano. However, as the home schooled girl approached middle school age, she apparently wanted to start attending public school, and therefore had to “catch up” on immunizations the state insists are required under color of law.

“Child Protective Services was trying to force her child to take a dangerous medication, Risperdal, against her will. We have been able to get a court order signed by [Wayne County Circuit Court] Judge Richard Skutt, staying the administration of this drug, which is not approved by the FDA in such cases. That’s why they put her in Hawthorne, so they could dope her up,” family attorney Allison Folmar told the media.

From Wikipedia: Side Effects of Risperidone
Risperidone has been associated with weight gain.[9] Other common side effects include akathisia, sedation, dysphoria, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, tremors, increased salivation, constipation, and stuffy nose. In addition, risperidone treatment can cause photosensitivity and patients should be warned to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or to use effective sunscreen (SPF 15+). Other skin conditions have also been reported, including rash, xerosis (dry skin), acne vulgaris, alopecia (hair loss), and seborrhea. At high doses skin hyperpigmentation may also occur.[10]
Many antipsychotics are known to cause hyperprolactinemia which may lead to hypogonadism-induced osteoporosis, galactorrhoea, gynaecomastia, irregular menstruation and sexual dysfunction.

I don't fully understand. Why was the girl prescribed Risperdal? I thought
[she] had to “catch up” on immunizations the state insists are required under color of law.
What does Risperdal immunize against? Is the issue that the parent refused to get her daughter immunized or that she refused to give her daughter Risperdal? I mean, I can accept that a child's tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, and whooping cough immunizations should be up to date before entering the general population of a school but no parent should be forced to give their child antipsychotics.

risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic. antipsychotic side effects can be severe.

the article gives no information on why risperdal...

risperdal's common uses:
wiki said:
* treatment of schizophrenia in adults
* treatment of schizophrenia in adolescents aged 13–17 years
* alone or in combination with lithium or valproate, for the short-term treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder in adults
* alone in the short-term treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder in children and adolescents aged 10–17 years
* treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and young adults
* it has also been used as a control drug for people with tourette syndrome and other tic disorders.
* treatment of major depression with psychotic features
* cure persistent or intractable hiccups[3]

afaik, it's not used in immunizations at all. i may be wrong, but i don't see why it would be :/

Well as far as i know risperidone is not a drug used for immunizations since what would it immunize against? As someone who has had to take risperdal for bipolar disorder i can certainly see why someone would not want their kid on it. Sure it works well for a lot of people but as we all know when it comes to kids these days over prescribing seems to be the norm these days at least in north america.

According to her aunt, Penny Godboldo, the girl suffered an adverse reaction to the immunizations. “She began acting out of character, being irritated, having facial grimaces that have been associated with immunizations,” Penny told the Detroit News.
Maryanne Godboldo sought help from the Children’s Center, an organization claiming to help families with at-risk children. Godboldo told relatives the medications ordered by the doctor worsened symptoms, including behavioral problems.
When Godboldo refused to give her child the prescribed medication, Child Protective Services became involved. CPS obtained a warrant to remove the girl, but Maryanne reportedly refused to surrender the child to the state.

Here is the missing link between vaccinations and Risperdal.

The child had some sort of behavioral/psychiatric/developmental difficulties, which is often claimed to be related to vaccinations, particularly autism, although this has been widely refuted; this is likely the cause of the controversy and the standoff.

If the child does not pose a danger to herself or to others, the whole story is very alarming; if not, then it is simply unfortunate, but in any regard, we are not given enough information here to judge. Either way, defintely sad and traumatic for the (already-troubled) child.

That's fucked. I can be held at gunpoint by cops for taking drugs of my own choosing and now held at gunpoint for not taking drugs of their choosing.

Guys, it's not as if the SWAT team showed up to shove the Risperdal down the child's throat. CPS was involved, and the mother refused to give up the child (and the story is probably much bigger than just refusal of medication), and the police needed to intervene, and then the situation escalated. We are just not hearing the whole story here, period.

Well now that you put it THAT way, I feel MUCH better. 8)

CPS says, "You gotta give her med [X] or we're taking her." When met with true resistance to their dictatorial bullshit they call in SWAT.

SWAT shows up not to shove the med down the child's throat, but to extract the child so that said child can be institutionalized and have CPS shove Risperdal and God knows what else down the child's throat. Oh, yeah, and they imprison the mom. Niiiiiiice.:X

This is completely outrageous. This country is rapidly degenerating into a total police state. When will the American people say "Enough is enough" en masse? And by then will it be too late?

It's up to us

^ You seem to be operating udder the assumption that the home was a good environment for tbe child to be in, etc. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, who really knows? The point is that the story as given is remarkably one sided. CPS could have been involved because the mother was abusive; the child might have been dangerous to herself or others without the medication ... The story is written in a histrionic way that is intended to generate outrage. I sincerely doubt that they just randomly decided to (a) prescribe the medication; (b) involve CPS; and (c) call in SWAT. Now, as fucked up as our government is, it still will take some momentum to get from (a) to (b) to (c), and what that momentum is is not really described. So I think that we can't really judge in this instance.

Slightly better article: http://www.topsecretwriters.com/2011/05/maryanne-godboldo-vs-cps-medical-care/

It sounds like exactly the kind of crap that's ruining the American medical system's credibility...
Several immunizations and vaccinations are required to register a youth into the public school system. These shots have been scrutinized on several natural and medical fronts relating to the adverse effects of toxins, including Mercury that several of them use.

After receiving the vaccinations, Ariana began to show new symptoms ranging from facial twitches, acting out of character and being easily irritated. Maryanne and her family recognized these symptoms as side effects associated with immunizations. Maryanne took Ariana to the Children’s Center for additional treatment, where her doctor placed Ariana on orders to take Risperdal.

Godboldo told relatives that the medication seemed to be worsening the symptoms and was also contributing to new behavioural problems. She contacted another doctor for a second opinion, and the decision was made to wean Ariana off of Risperdal, and to take a holistic approach to try and heal the 13 year old.

I must say that she made the right decision, treating a disproved pseudosyndrome with holistic pseudomedicine. It's reprehensible, however, that a parent can't decide how their child recieves medical care. Risperdal is hardly a benign medication as so many others have pointed out - there should be serious thought given before prescribing it to a 13 year old.

I aint read none of these responses yet, cuz I only got one thing to say--Look at the source. its prisonplanet. More of the Alex Jones nutjob conspiracy shit that UB constantly posts in CEP.

If this is true, its despicable, but Im leaning towards this not bein the real story considering the source here.

Thee vaccine-autism link has been thoroughly debunked; and what, exactly, are you referring to (sekio) as a "disproved pseudo syndrome?"
